Swindon Player Ratings

Martin 6.5 Solid enough, good kicking and few good saves, nearly did enough with Cox's goal too but rebound fell right to him. Hope he is back soon.

Gilbert 6.5 Thought he was ok today, some neat passing with Cleverly in 1st half and generally strong defensively, very energetic and battled away.

Hobbs 6 Better than Morrison and thought he was trying to urge us forward and play the right way. His few runs were risky but movement was poor so he had little option other than the hoof!

Morrison 4 Very poor game, opted to hoof everything and anything he got. Also should have scored twice. Think it could be time for Brown to have a run-out, hopefully cutting out the long balls!

Mattock 6 At times very good, and other times quite poor. Overall though thought he was good going forward, however struggled in defence against a useful right sided Swindon attack.

Cleverly 6.5 Energetic throughout, strong first half on the right, always looking for the ball and some nice touches. Struggled 2nd half due to head tennis and continuous long ball.

King 6.5 Not one of his better games but difficult because 2nd half, the midfield was completely cut out. Another well taken goal though and is one of first names on team sheet for me.

Oakley 6 Some poor corners again, seemed a bit flat today as a number of players did. Again, longball 2nd half really didn't make it easy for midfield to play their part.

Dyer 4 Shocking game really, never looked like he wanted the ball, and when got it, didnt use it well enough or create anything. Classed as a winger but didn't play like one today.

Howard 6.5 Won so many headers yet again, was just crowded out when played to his feet though and his lay offs were easily ready. Battled and carved afew half chances for himself.

Fryatt 5 Looked slow today. Held the ball up well but other than his attempted lob, never looked like being a threat. Would much prefer Cox on that showing. Similar to Fryatt but with pace!

Subs

Pentney 7 I was nervous for him but he soon proved me wrong. Solid kicking and some very important saves. Great debut and sure Thracian can give us more of an insight to his qualities?!

Berner 6 Looked energetic when came on, and perhaps more of a threat than Dyer by his pure enthusiasm and willingness to get the ball and drive forward. Good box to box player.

Chambers 6 Well this is what people wanted, no Dickov and more Ashley. Definately freshened things up which was needed, would have made it straight swap for Fryatt though.

Pearson 6 Frustrating day for Pearson, from his reactions during the game, pretty sure he didn't like the long balls anymore than the rest of us. We tryed to play the right way in the 1st half and at times looked like league leaders. The goal obviously shook us and we then went about playing ball after ball forward which Swindon dealt with time and time again. We stopped playing our way and became almost desperate at times. However yet again Pearson's changes seemed to add something and I think played some part in us getting a point. Didn't really deserve anything from the game but I guess hitting the post 3 times meant we were due some luck. So apart from about a 20minute patch in the first half, one of the worst performances I've seen for a while. Think Morrison and Dyer should have a rest on tuesday. A special mention for Simon Cox, would love to sign him, he was a real pest, held the ball up well and his pace was scary. Lets get back to playing our way tuesday nite!

Heres my ratings :P

The weak links Fryatt, Howard, Dyer, Gilbert.

The strong links, Pentney, Cleverly :P

You're not funny.

How you can give Dyer a higher rating than Howard is beyond me.

Wind up merchant.

I can't believe Howard is getting rated the same as Fryatt. although i'm not shocked tbh. Fryatt was better today.

Martin 6 - Made a great save to deny Cox just before their goal. Commands well.

Gilbert 6 - Dithered a bit, lost the ball in the centre of the pitch which lead to their goal, but made more defensive tackles and clearances than mistakes, maybe should've scored.

Mattock 5 - Poor.

Morrison 5 - What was the need for the handball in the area? Hoof.

Hobbs 6 - Poor passing, but solid in defence.

Oakley 6 - Shit corners yet again, but still tried to make things happen.

Dyer 4 - Awful.

King 6 - Gave the ball away a few times, hit the post twice, finally scored.

Cleverley 5 - Was Walsall just a one off?

Howard 5 - Shit, moaned about most decisions, offisde a few times, didn't win anything, gave a way stupid fouls.

Fryatt 6 - Worked hard, had few chances, but still looked very dangerous, always chased any lost cause.

Pentney 7 - Made 2 vital saves, catching was good as was his kicking.

Berner 6 - Get him back in, whether it be at left back, or centre midfield, when he came on, he looked up for the fight.

Chambers - Got 15 minutes, not really on long enough.

Yeah i agree with that, especially Chambers needing more time, and Berner needing to be back in the team, as the players didnt seem up for the fight today but when Berner came on he did. I thought Cleverly done ok tho, he tried to make things happen, but he was immense at Walsall.

Gilbert has lost it.

Dyer has lost it completely.

Fryatt has it but isn't interested now he's got his contract.

And Oakley is no use in the middle, we hit a bad run of form previously till Davies took over in there.

Four massive problems yet we're still not losing!

Sorry if anyone else has replied to this idiot yet i couldnt be bothered to read through....I thought gilbert was man of the match especially second half..... fryatt got minimal service due to a poor game from dyer and morrisons hoof ball.... and its not oakleys fault...i doubt he wants to play there..he was a machine out on the right before cleverly turned up and had to play just because hes from man utd

I was watching a different game from everyone else, as will become apparent...

Martin 6 - Not a lot he could do about the goal

Gilbert 7 - Got the centre backs out of trouble on several occasions, but weak going forward

Morrison 5 - Looked really uncertain today, and beaten far too easily for their goal

Hobbs 5.5 - Same as Morrison, but an extra half mark for trying to come forward a couple of times, with a bit of success

Mattock 6 - Solid enough, not much coming forward

Cleverley 4 - I'm sorry, I think he's the current problem. He doesn't tackle, his positional sense is shocking, and because of him, Oakley had to be moved several times in position. Some decent runs with the ball, but at the moment he's simply not a good enough all round player

Oakley 7 - The best I've seen him play in central midfield in the first half, the only one making runs and showing invention. Sacrificed to right wing in second half to make room for Cleverley and didn't have the same impact. Some good corners as well.

King 7 - Superbly cool finish, always industrious, but should surely have got one of the others that hit the post as thy were both unmarked a few yards out.

Dyer 6 - All right, the boo boys are on his back and will probably force him out of the team at the current rate of progress. I hope you feel proud of yourselves. Never beat his man except for the two or three times he did, won several corners, always offered width. Wasn't great, tackling is rubbish, but some people should grow up. When he went off and Cleverley went left side, we lost all shape and idea until Cleverley himself went off.

Howard 6 - Not his best game, some good headers and knock ons as always, but struggled to make much of an all round impact

Fryatt 6 - No service at all, yet the attempted lob was inspired and showed what he can do. But I also think he's not working the line as hard as he was in the earlier games this season.

Subs:

Pentney 7 - Several decent saves, a monster of a kick

Berner 5 - Couldn't get in it

Chambers 5 - Similarly

Pearson 5 - He seems to be struggling to know what to do with the midfield since Davies left.

Martin 6 (One excellent save but at fault for the goal as he was metaphorically asleep. Had he been alert he could easily have dealt with the through ball that led to the goal but he assumed the defenders would beat Cox and was caught out completely)

Gilbert 6.25 (One vital headed clearance when the only defender around for a cross and might have made a goal for Howard had he not miscontrolled a good ball and been given offside anyway but otherwise still below his best).

Hobbs 5 (Gave the ball away so often with his clearances I lost count. The bloke is just like Kisnorbo and we can't afford it. Times he won possession, looked up and just heaved an aimless 30 yard ball to nowhere. We cannot afford to just give the ball away. H should be told in no uncertain terms to simply play simple 10 yard passes. People like king and Cleverley were left feeding off scraps. Outmanouevred for their goal and might have been caught out a second time too.).

Morrison 5 (Pretty much the same as Hobbs).

Mattock 6 (Might have made a goal for Andy King whose effort hit the post but was otherwise steady rather than influential).

Oakley 6.75 (Up and down but did at least try to make something happen by persisting with the little one-two's that led to Kingy's equaliser and by keeping putting the ball in the box. Dead ball kicks still hit and miss but his willingness to stay involved paid off).

Cleverley 6.25 (Nothing came off for him but he was another who worked really hard trying to make things happen despite being continually by-passed in midfield by out inept central defenders).

King 7.75 (Once given freedom to get forward finally found the key to unlocking Swindon. Ghosted in for a good header which his a post before keeping his cool to grab another vital goal, this time an equaliser. Hit the woodwork on another occasion too and otherwise tried to play the ball around constructively despite often being short of time and space but how frustrated he must have been to see the ball being forever hoisted over his head which simply played into the hands of the taller visitors).

Dyer 5.5 (Narrowed the play and never beat his full-back. Disappointing).

Fryatt 5 (Hardly had a kick).

Howard 6 (Not his best game but managed to make a nuisance of himself).

Subs:

Pentney 7.5 (Two absolutely vital saves which saved us from defeat).

Berner 6 (Did okay. Got well involved and helped pose diffferent problems).

Chambers 5.5 (One shot in his shortish cameo but it really is daft to have a specialist marksman like DJ out on loan when we've no genuinely effective alternative strikers).

Agree with that, thought the 2 centre backs were poor today.

The side needs to be freshened up, berner in midfield borwn in at centre back. Think adams is back this week too so maybe he should come into the squad.

ok

well it's hard for me to compare to previous performances as this was first (and probably only) game of the season for me.

i thought both the goalies made great saves, admittedly they didn't have much to do, but when called upon they did the business.

totally unfair to blame martin for the goal, in that situation the striker is likely to come out on top - in a sense he was unlucky, if he got less of a solid hand on it it would have gone for a corner.

the defence are hard to judge, as at times they were all over the place and ill-disciplined, but apart from the goal (which i blame the midfielders for), there was always a head or a block to prevent chances...

that said, mattock was pretty shocking for most of the game. yes there was a lot of hoofing, but hobbs ran the ball more often than oakley!

i thought gilbert was one of our better players, at least he looked awake and keen.

i couldn't believe he took cleverly off, as he was the only one really running and hustling...

howard was a joy to watch, it's like he is a specialist, like a designated hitter or a punt returner.

i saw fryatt have a shot. near the end. that's about it.

just glad i didn't fate the team a rare loss... and kingy took his goal wonderfully.

Just out of interest, can anyone pick a man of the match from Leicester side????

I really struggled!!

Pentney for keeping us in the game or King for putting the disappointment of his header onto the woodwork behind him and finally scoring to grab us an increasingly unlikely point.

Agree with Pentney but King?

You have to be joking. In the last three home games our midfield has been outplayed and one of the reasons is that our central midfielders do not impose themselves on the game enough. There is no coincidence that the best King has played was when Davies played alongside him. King can only play well when the quality of midfielder around him is better than most of what we have at the moment.

I'll acknowledge that he took his goal well but his miss from the header was unbelievable. He's generally had a good season but Saturday's match was far from his best.

No-one's claiming it was his best game. But in the context of the situation King's goal was vital because, despite being our holding midfield player, it was he who got deep into the penalty area to conjure up our two best chances when no-one else looked likely too.

For a guy who only plays well when Davies is there he's spread one hell of a lot of goals across a lot of matches and, much as I rated and welcomed Davies, I seem to remember us being top before he'd ever arrived on the scene and King scoring goals just the same and as he has done for years.

Pentney, meanwhile made a contribution that was as vital as King's but he only played a third of the game.

both were alright, i'd give MOTM to hobbs

he was solid at the back, without him we could have lost the game
