davieG Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric is poised to back manager Nigel Pearson to the extent of up to six new players for next season's Championship campaign. The dust has not yet settled on City's League One title achievement, but already the club are preparing for the next level up. Two on-loan men, Jack Hobbs and Wayne Brown, are permanent-deal targets already, but there looks like being more. Mandaric said: "Now the hard work starts. We are already having strategy meetings and recognising the needs for more quality. "We are looking for five or six players and we are having discussions along that plan with Nigel and his staff. One thing about the manager is that his judgement is spot-on, and I am very happy with that. "We have a good base and we will give the current squad every opportunity to participate, and for that reason we are not going to bring in large numbers of players but be very selective." That is in contrast to last year when Martin Allen brought in 14 players, which proved too many to be integrated into the squad he inherited. Next season will be geared to give City every chance of competing for that longed-for return to the Premier League, and Mandaric said: "The worst thing for me would be to predict that, but what our supporters must know is that the character of people like Nigel and myself is to be successful, and the way to do that is to go to the next promotion." Mandaric has been delighted with the level of support and said: "The fans have been great in sticking with us this season. "It is their club really. It was here over a hundred years before I came and it will be here a hundred years after. "I am very grateful for their incredible support after so many years of not being successful."
Guest Chocolate Teapot Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Would have thought thats a goalkeeper, a right back, two midfielders, two strikers. Think we need 7 or 8 to be honest, as we'll need a back up goalie.

Dr The Singh Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Depends on what they mean by 'new' and how many of the loan players will become permanent or re-sign as loanees. Very true, I can't see many plus mill signings, many of the prem\ex prem will be loanees!!!
dave_the_fox Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 So does that 5 or 6 include hobbs and brown? If so it means we only looking at 3 or 4!!! Surely not!
Lillehamring Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 more super-ambiguity - 6 new players could mean anything, does it include loans, for instance. but i'm glad that's all he's giving out, rather than the usual x-millions of quid announcements, that just pump up the transfer fees.
Fox in a Box Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 6 inc hobbs and brown. 2 defenders (hobbs/brown) 1 new keeper 1 new striker 1 left back 1 midfielder.. Remember we have Clem, Kissy, Tunch all to com back too.. These must be of a good quality if we are to challenge for top 6 next year. Matt holland anyone?

We can manage without a right-back Kissy's contract is at an ends so no guarantee there!
Fox in a Box Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 We can manage without a right-back Kissy's contract is at an ends so no guarantee there! But hes of a decent quality to keep and I guess this isnt included into the 6. Also Swansea are offereing 200K for Nathan Dyer, we surely could get him.. Quality is the Key. Id like to have Cleverly personally I thought he was a breath of fresh air..... Loan Deal...he looked keen on being here too.
Ricey Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Very wise, the worst thing we could do is bring in a whole load of new players. It didn't work for the last 4 seasons in the Championship and it won't work now.

Alf Bentley Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Would have thought thats a goalkeeper, a right back, two midfielders, two strikers. Think we need 7 or 8 to be honest, as we'll need a back up goalie. Spot on! Needed: 1st choice keeper, 1st choice right back, defensive central midfielder, attacking central midfielder, fast mobile 1st choice striker (could play with Howard or Fryatt) and back-up striker. 1 or 2 could be season-long loans, but would need to be good enough to be 1st team squad regulars.
Daggers Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Worked quite well this year. True that. Worked for Brum too a couple of season back.
Thracian Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Remember we have Clem, Kissy, Tunch all to com back too.. Is that the euphoria of promotion of promotion or something? I've heard nothing that suggests Clemence will be back, Kissa will likely leave and we'll have to see if Tunchev gets back before Christmas and with no ill effects. If I were preparing for the new season I wouldn't bank on any one of those three.
Ultra Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Tunchev will be back sooner rather than later. Bulgaria need him for their World Cup campaign.
Ricey Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Worked quite well this year. Most of our first team weren't drafted in during the summer though, certainly the key players. We have a proven winning side with a winning mentality, although a bit more quality is needed, it would seem silly break it all up by singing 8 or 9 players.
Matt Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Meelan - Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Please. It's nice to hear bits from you now and again but you're getting in the media abit too much again for my liking!
Tilley Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 At least one Gk, maybe one permanant & one loan? A right back. Hoping Gilbert comes back. Then we have decent cover at CB (Hobbs, Brown, Tunch & Morrison) Presuming Mattock stays, then we have him & Berner for left back. (I assume Powell is retiring?) We have Gradel & Oakley for right wing & Dyer for left wing. A winger is needed, maybe one that can play on both the right and left of midfield. We alson need a central midfielder or two. Currently King, Oakley & Berner can play there. As for up front, Hayles & Dickov need to go & we need two strikers to compliment Howard & Fryatt. So presuming Hobbs & Brown have signed, Gilbert & maybe Stockdale return, that would leave another 6 signings. One GK, one winger, two other midfielders & two strikers.
AyewJoking Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 IMO we'd need a complete new eleven to go up next season! 6 new players will help to make us a stronger team for the future though and maybe a return to the prem in 2010/2011.
Stevosevic Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 Hobbs permanent Brown permanent Gilbert permanent Cleverley loan deal New keeper - could be anyone Striker - someone in the Howard mould Striker - poacher, with a bit of pace Midfielder - koumas? Need at least 8 IMO. Dickov and Hayles are not good enough, and people will still question Fryatt so we are desperate for some more fire power.
Thracian Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 "We are looking for five or six players..." Levi Psssh, Billy Mackay, Ryan Beswick, Lee Cox, Eric Odhiambo, Conrad Logan. If anyone sees them would they please let their families know. Failing that if anyone's looking for the basis of a six-a-side team...

Several Goalkeepers Gilbert Morrison Hoobs Tunchev Dyer Berner as regulars Gradel, King and Mattock had only a handful of games between them. I'd call that a substantial rebuild especially when you add on Edworthy, Cleverly, Davis, Adams, Powell and Brown as back ups.
filbertway Posted 23 April 2009 Posted 23 April 2009 We definately need to strengthen the squad if we are to compete at the level above. I trust NP's judgement on that,, hopefully Mandaric doesn't think buying 6 new players should equal challenging the top 6, or even worse try and buy 6 players he thinks will get us promoted.
