filbertboy Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 We must be about the only modern decent sized football stadium in England that doesn't have a giant screen within the ground?Back when the Walkers was opened, I was surprised that there was no screen. So come on Milan, splash the cash & get one/two installed ready for next season.....please! Anyone agree? no
iancognito Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Simply not important in the scheme of things. This I prefer stadiums built for football, not matchday experiences. Absolutely this. changes next year from the Performing Rights Society (PRS) may mean the club will pay up to £6k for a license to play after-goal music... Hooray to this! Old Trafford doesn't! Anfield & Goodison too. In fact if it wasn't for Arsenal and that giant wanky screen they had at Highbury, no-one would've even thunk twice about having them in grounds. The original plans included a big screen but the financial 'troubles' meant we ended up with cheapo's!!For the same reason, we have paper towels in the bogs instead of hand dryers and the concourse walls are not plastered. In fact, with the amount of corners that were cut during the building of the stadium im amazed its still standing!! My brother worked for an engineering firm that put together the support and stair rails for the ground and they were told to halve the amount of soldering material that they were using to piece things together as there was no guarantee the club could pay for the original spec they had asked for. Given the amount of corner-cutting, I'm amazed they allowed the badged-up glass frontage. If it was being built today they'd have had Bernie standing on the corner of Filbert Way with a hand painted sign saying "FUTBALL KLUB" on it.
Foxes_Trust Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 changes next year from the Performing Rights Society (PRS) may mean the club will pay up to £6k for a license to play after-goal music...oh sorry, have i opened up a can of worms here? Firstly, big screen. We asked about the cost of this around 2 years ago. To have a reasonable quality screen to play action back & cope with sun glare, costs around £700k. Can't see many fans choosing that to be spent on a one screen, than player(s). PRS - that would cover anything on the tannoy, it wouldn't just relate to after goal music. You either have a license or you don't. The "goal horn" alone is from a BBC sound effect record so may attract different rules.
Scow Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 I'd rather use the cash towards increasing the capacity of the ground so we can have more empty seats on a matchday.
mikelcfc Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 hate to mension it but the screen isnt actually broken... i stewarded the rugby and it was working fine, its mearly an energy saving thing for the club, as is how late the flood lights get turned on, last season they were on almost all the time, hwever now they go on as late as possible
bluebeau Posted 7 May 2009 Author Posted 7 May 2009 Old Trafford doesn't! The Mighty Wycombe Wanderers do!

I didn't realise you were looking at that sort of ££££'s, & of course 2 screens are required, so if your figure is correct, then you are possibly talking £1.5m. For that sort of money, then I withdraw my question & cancel out the forum which I started! £1.5m would get us a half decent player & I would sooner have that, than a big screen. Never mind, it gets people chatting on the forum & that's the whole purpose of it, yes?
Basingstoke Fox Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 To be honest, there is no point in having a screen anyway, they are just used for advertising and maybe show the odd few goals which may have been scored recently which you can barely see anyway because the screen is some shit quality pile of crap. Im just going by the screens I can think of (Palace, Reading, Soton). Having said that we could start sponsoring corner kicks like Coventry do
General Smuts Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 What benefits would a screen give? You can see the game on the pitch. Not if all you uncouth youths stand in front of me all game
Sir Fynwy Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 I think the club should add a playstation or wii to every seat to entertain us all. They could save money to pay for this by getting rid of any decent players, who wants to watch the football anyway?
MC Prussian Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 A large screen at the Walkers, just like Arsenal does??? Laughable idea. What for? Instant replays??? When you go to a match, I thought it was always for the real-time experience, not TV-like spoon-fed entertainment, distracting from the action on the pitch. If at all, then they could give the scoreboards a revamp and exchange them for something slightly bigger (or more legible), offering further, additional advertisement options.
foxoffderby Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 Agreed not too bothered about the screen pump the money into the team. But again would like working scoreboards
C-man Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 A big screen at our bowl? Don't make it any more plastic please!
Tommeh Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 Why one big screen? We should get at least one each and whilst we're at it those super comfy seats at MK Dons went down a treat with our end so get those in, add massagers and suddenly this club will finally reach it's full potential.
MarkDeVries Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 I for one do not want a screen in the Walkers. I remember when we played Cov or Man City and they had one and it was just awful, constant advertisting.
Cobbo Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 I loved Filbert Street, much more than the Walkers. That had no screen. There is no need for one at all.

Thracian Posted 8 May 2009 Posted 8 May 2009 A giant screen would have been a godsend last season! One you could have pulled down to shield your eyes from the football.
Southern Fox Posted 8 May 2009 Posted 8 May 2009 I loved Filbert Street, much more than the Walkers. That had no screen. There is no need for one at all. I thought it did have a screen! And it was colour - only towards the end Dont get me wrong it wasnt a modern day plasma thingy but i do remember trying to pick out the players faces when the line up was read out Anyone else remember this??
