BlabyFox Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 Would love to think he could get us to the prem and keep us in the top 10 for a few seasons and I think Nigel is the most compatent manager we've had for a long while.
Guest Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 There was an artcle on the bluearmy site the other day suggesting that he could be the first manager to really step out of MON's shadow. Guess we'd be better assessing it after the next season or two if we manage to keep hold of him, but my gut feeling is that he could end up being up there alongside him as one of the great managers of this club.
Asha Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 I hate comparing him with other managers. He's his own man, with his own managerial style, and hopefully his own continued success story.
Dub_Monkey Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 i voted yes, but i'm not sure he could take us into the top 10, tbh i dont think anyone could unless we got our very own abramovich! he definately looks like he has the ability to get us into the promised land though, going by last season
Hugo Sanchez Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 I hate comparing someone with others. He's his own man, with his own managerial style, and hopefully his own continued success story. This, seriously he's never gonna be MON or Brian Little or Jock Wallace or Jimmy Bloomfield or Matt Gilles. He's gonna be Nigel Pearson with his own name in our history books. I hated that Levein was always made out to be the next MON.
Corky Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 I hate comparing him with other managers. He's his own man, with his own managerial style, and hopefully his own continued success story.
Guest Bilo Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 I'd love to see it, but the amount of money NP would need to spend to come close to emulating MON's achievements would probably require pockets deeper even than Milan's. I believe he can get us to the Premiership given time but once we're there, I imagine survival is about as good as we can hope for without a billionaire buying out Mandaric.
fox123 Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 A lot of pressure to put on a manager after one season in League One! Different era, different circumstances.
carterfox90 Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 no he is his own man but to acheive what martin did for us i fear will never be matched unless we get a billionaire at the helm thats what matters in football today sorry to say
Ozwin Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 Hard to say, he's put his mark on the side in League 1 but the real test will be this season where we start again as a club.
Ultra Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 A lot of pressure to put on a manager after one season in League One! Different era, different circumstances. This. And by the way, it's O'Neill. Show MON some respect by spelling his name correctly.
purpleronnie Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 He got us out of a shit league and now he might be the next Martin o'neil....thats funny.
Guest Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 I hate comparing him with other managers. He's his own man, with his own managerial style, and hopefully his own continued success story. You speak sense, young Nussul.
dandannieldanok Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 He's got to catch Micky Adams up yet never mind MON. I hate comparing him with other managers. He's his own man, with his own managerial style, and hopefully his own continued success story. Agreed.
Monk Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 The prem has changed significantly since we were in it, the top 10 are at a higher level than they were 10 years ago. Nige is great, but even if we do get promoted (which itself is doubtful this season) we would do well to survive.
Webbo Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 If we struggle next season people will soon be calling him the next Holloway.
Kilworthfox Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 If we struggle next season people will soon be calling him the next Holloway. I want to know who is going to be the next Jimmy Bloomfield? Who is O'Neil anyway?
Salieri Posted 7 July 2009 Posted 7 July 2009 WAY too early to be making comparisons like this. The guy has had a good start to his career with us, but it's only been ONE season. The real test starts here and if and when he gets us into the Prem, then we can start mentioning the two in the same breath. As much as i liked O'Neill and have tremendous respect for what he achieved with the club, I can't wait for another manager to really be successful for us so we can lay the ghost to rest.
Fox92 Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 Agree with the post above, it is to early for comparisons like this but, having said this, I am certainley optamistic about the future. I think we're all optamistic and want to see how 'well' we do in the championship because Nigel has had a good start here. Look, Nigel showed us time and time again that he was the correct choice. 1. He spent his money wisely. 2. He got the players in when we needed back up. For instance Powell. 3. He didn't allow players that didn't want to play for the club at the club such as Hume, McAuley and Stearman. He says that on the DVD! 4. He got the correct money for the players that went. Hume, McAuley and Stearman all went for £1million plus which was great. 5. Most importantly, he got the results. 6. He loaned players from top clubs - Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United. Milan has got the money and that is why I am optamistic. With money to spend and good man in charge, there is always hope for promotion. Hopefully, we can do what Milan did with Harry at Pompey and get the club in the Premiership, stay there and then push on for top half finishes. This season will prove how good Nigel actually is. If he can get this club out of the championship and into the premiership and stay there, we can start this thread again. There is no doubt that if we actually got into the Premiership we have the money to stay there - we could attract players to the club. If we can do well his season, including promotion , then he will be an idol forever more - not saying he isn't one now.
Jake145 Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 To be honest, I don't we've seen enough of him to be able to say whether or not he's the new O'neil. League 1 is hardly the right league to prove whether or not your the best manager for the job to keep us in the top 2 league's. We will have to see what he does in the Championship.
MikeyT Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 There was an artcle on the bluearmy site the other day suggesting that he could be the first manager to really step out of MON's shadow. Nah Peter Taylor...surely??
ithuriel Posted 8 July 2009 Posted 8 July 2009 A lot of pressure to put on a manager after one season in League One! Different era, different circumstances. what martin did for us required building on what previous managers had done. martin was the best manager we have had but if he had started with the start point nige has had to go from i doubt we would have been in the top ten of the prem league. nige has had to start his reign from a point below any other manager in our history so if he gets us into the prem he will be right up there alongside o'niell in my book.
