Ultra Posted 27 September 2009 Posted 27 September 2009 Tranmere at home last season. Porter disappeared. In his first game for TEN months? Not exactly a surprise... But he doesn't seem to be taking the Conference by storm.
Leicfox Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 Taylor salutes Leicester loan star Wycombe manager Peter Taylor was full of praise for Ashley Chambers after his injury-time equaliser earned the Chairboys a 1-1 draw at Swindon The Leicester loanee grabbed his first league goal to cancel out Kevin Amankwaah's opener and secure a point for the visitors. Taylor said: "I'm delighted with Chambers. He's on loan from Leicester where he's lost a bit of confidence but to get his first league goal here was great, especially as he's not even match fit at the moment.

Guest Basildon Fox Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 Normally though, the lads from these breaks are like bundles of energy in their first appearances back. But the fact was and is we have no competitive ressies any more so it is virtually impossible to be match fit when you come back from a long term lay-off.
CosbehFox Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 But the fact was and is we have no competitive ressies any more so it is virtually impossible to be match fit when you come back from a long term lay-off. Porter had a pretty much full pre-season and ala King, it looked like he was going to make the breakthrough when previously be considered a reserve.
Bert Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 I could probably give a lot more reasons for saying that than you could for keeping either N'Guessan or Dyer in the side.People mention Chelsea as if it were Porter's only good game but he had a perfectly good and effective first season in the Championship - and even to the extent that opponents were doubling up on him. Porter made goals and even scored a few but first and foremost he was disciplined. He retained possession in tight situations, maintained our width and passed the ball accurately rather like Kingy. But both Dyer and N'Guessan often look lost in Championship football. Okay N'Guessan's scored two league goals and another in the cup - a reasonable return that only adds fuel to my argument that he's not a winger at all but more suited to a central striker's role. But other than his goals the bloke's been a liabiity for much of the time. Too often he runs with his head down and straight into defenders or some sort of blind alley. He seems to have no concept of linking up with other players or pushing the simple pass. I thought he'd be quick but he never seems to atack people at pace or with any apparent confidence that he'll beat them. The only times he looks dangerous are when he steals inside and get's close enough to goal for a header. As for Dyer he's like a cheap sparkler. He rackles for a few minutes then his brilliance fades and he looks like a dud for the rest of the time. What's happened to him I've no idea. It's almost as if he either has no confidence in himself or belief in what he's trying to achieve. As soon as a defender get's the measure of him he seems to be neutralised. While Gradel would try again and again until something happened, Dyer just seems to fade into the background. Porter had indifferent days but generally speaking he was persistent and reliable on the ball. He rarely had the ability to beat someone for pace but even if his marker stopped him going forward he was aware enough of team-mates to retain the ball or to make something happen from a corner or a free-kick. Furthermore his workrate in chasing back when we'd lost the ball was always good value. N'Guessan hardly gets involved in this aspect at all and Dyer is hardly influential or a workhorse that way either. I keep hoping to see the real Dyer re-emerge but he seems long gone now and my underlying optimism seems less and less justified. Indeed I don't think I've ever seen Porter play as badly as N'Guessan and Dyer on recent occasions. What a surprise. Porter and King the saviours, yet again. Porter is playing Conference. King can't get in our team. Why, oh why haven't Man Utd and Chelsea come calling yet?
Sir Fynwy Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 But the fact was and is we have no competitive ressies any more so it is virtually impossible to be match fit when you come back from a long term lay-off. We do have competitive reserves matches in the reserves cup, I believe there is one at the Walkers on Wednesday.
Anish Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 What a surprise. Porter and King the saviours, yet again. Porter is playing Conference. King can't get in our team. Why, oh why haven't Man Utd and Chelsea come calling yet? Add Sheehan to that list too. He's far too good for Oldham
Thracian Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 Add Sheehan to that list too. He's far too good for Oldham Since Sheehan joined them Oldham have had back to back wins, Sheehan made two goals in the first and was many fans' man-of-the-match and the six points gained have lifted Oldham from the relegation zone up to eighth. During his time in our first team too, Sheehan proved far more dangerous and influential than Mattock. As for King not being good enough for our first team what utter nonsense. King played a part in two of our goals at Watford in one of his few full games this season having suffered first with a dead leg and then with and other injury earlier in the season. Having played his part in our best 45 minutes of midfield play all season against Watford he was badly missed against Preston, the preferred Wellens being noticeably at fault for one goal and of distinctly limited value defensively. Despite so many supposedly promising signings our results this season, with King being mostly absent, have been disappointing and seem to be getting worse. Not only are we slipping down the table week on week but we're sacrificing points we've no need to. As for Porter the fact that he's playing Conference football is testimony to how far he's disappeared off the radar since Pearson's arrival, for whatever reason. Presumably he's playing for Mansfield to regain the fitness he's lost since spending a whole season injured, recovering to show his old form in pre-season, and then getting inexplicably sidelined. It is nothing to do with his ability unless there are factors I'm not aware of regarding the aftermath of injuries or whatever. Porter's predicament is such a waste. And while you're the last person I'd expect to have any sympathy with him, I just hope he comes through the bad times and emerges fully fit, fully motivated and able to demonstrate, once again, what an intelligent and effective player he is. But I seriously doubt it will ever happen here. In fact I believe he, Gradel and King will all leave the club before the start of next season. Which will doubtless please you no end. Perhaps we can fill in with a few more trundling old timers who can't pass and can't retain possession.

N'Guessan is 22, Adams is 23, Oakley 32, Wellens 29, Dyer 26, Gradel 22 (Think They're Right ) THRAC IS JON RUDKIN! If it were up to you we'd have the academy playing against Middlesborough on Tuesday I bet. As much as I enjoy reading your posts Thracian, sometimes you talk absoloue shite The reason King isn't in the team is because Oakley and Wellens are better players, don't even bother trying to tell me otherwise. Some people are never happy

Thracian Posted 28 September 2009 Posted 28 September 2009 Who have we got who is like that then?Neilson (slowish/indifferent passer) Brown (ditto) Tunchev's (definitely a trundler right now though few seemed to notice or accept it). Gallagher - skillful but a trundler who's never really shown himself as sharp enough to be a marksman. Howard (noticeably slow now other than the odd burst) Berner (not my idea of either a speed merchant or a deft passer) ===== THRAC IS JON RUDKIN! (I'm not sure he'd appreciate that ) ====== If it were up to you we'd have the academy playing against Middlesborough on Tuesday I bet. No, I'd play the experienced guys. They've presided over some indifferent results. Let them put it right. It's time the kids were allowed to move on because sitting on their butts won't do their careers any good at all. Especially if all they're doing is watching people who are not playing as well as they used to. ======= The reason King isn't in the team is because Oakley and Wellens are better players, don't even bother trying to tell me otherwise. What you base that on I've no idea. Wellens doesn't have the discipline to play King's fulcrum role. And even as an attacker the stats give no indicatiuon that he is better than King. Wellens as an attacking midfielder scored 3 goals for Doncaster last season and had 63 shots and four assists. King as a broadly defensive midfielder scored 11 goals had 89 shots and contributed 5 assists. Even Oakley couldn't match that with 8 goals, 56 shots and five assists. A season's effort offers a fair point and King - quite apart from his significant defensive contribution, came out way on top.
Vlad The Impaler Posted 29 September 2009 Posted 29 September 2009 Just because a player is not as fast as Usain Bolt doesn't mean their not very good. I take it King is the fastest player in the squad then... Neilson will come good, Brown has been outstanding he is just going through a dodgy spell, Tunchev is different class, Gallagher hasn't had a chance upfront yet really and looks quality, Howard was our player of the season last year and Berner has been one of our best players so far this campaign. As for Wellens, for a start they were playing in different leagues, Wellens made the Team of the year for 3 seasons on the trott in League 1. If we played King instead of Wellens for all the games we have played this season then we would be bottom half. Don't get me wrong I am an admirer of Kings and think he will have a successful career, hopefully here. He just isn't ready to be a week in, week out performer in the championship yet. Eventually, yes, he will be better than Wellens I think. I appreciate your views and the way you think the game should be played, I'd like to see Gradel back in there and for someone like Kee to break through, but who am I to question Nige? We have good players at this club, some are potentially brilliant.

Tunchev was a liability last time out and his first challenge is to get fit again. Gallagher's entire career record offers no suggestion that he's a genuine striker. Howard has struggled for most of this season whatever he did last season. BVerner - I'd quite agree. c) That doesn't change the evidence nor does it mean Wellens is even similar to King as a holding midfield player. I wouldn't call Wellens a particularly ental midfielder and think he is caught in possession far too often to be our fulcrum. d) What possible evidence do you have for that remark? King's first team record is excellent as is his record in every other City team he's represented. In fact it may be that King has won more honours at all levels for City than any other player. And that he has the best points-winnng ratio of all in City's first team.
