marbelladave Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 Mr Pearson will play the same team against Palace as started against Derby mark my words! Duly marked! Though you could well be right, Pearson has a seriously stubborn streak and might well sent out the same XI just to show he has confidence in them!
RowlattsFox Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 Weale Morrison Brown Hobbs Berner Adams King Wellens Dyer Gallagher Waghorn Subs: Logan, McGivern, Oakley, Kermogant, Fryatt, Howard, N'Guessan Freshen things up upfront, either Gallagher/Waghorn or Kermogant/Waghorn because I think both could work quite well. King had his best game of the season on saturday so you can't drop him, Oakley is the only centre midfielder that tries to get in the box occasionally but Wellens is the better player with the ball at his feet, Adams and Dyer will have to provide the attacking threat from midfield.

Koke Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 I've been thinking (dangerous, I know ) and I'd quite fancy a 4-3-3.Weale Morrison Hobbs Brown Berner Oakley King Wellens Gallagher Fryatt Waghorn Bench: Logan, DJ, Kermorgant, Howard, Dyer, McGivern, Adams The thinking behind this was that we seem to be wanting to play a passing game in our build up play at home, and the diamond was pretty effective at that. The downside was the lack of width. So this time out, use gallagher and waghorn on the sides of the front 3, where they can work the channels to stretch the palace defence. Has a nice balance with the left footed waghorn on the left and right footed gallagher on the right. Nice solid central 3 in midfield, which is going to be important, as Palace are bound to be pretty physically strong in the middle of the park. The big downside is no real height up front, which means no hoofing! If we're playing balls in the air with this formation, it would have to be in the form of diagonal balls into the channel. Howard or Yann can come off the bench if Fryatt gets too outmuscled by the 2 centre backs. I think many on here have been screaming out for that for some time now. The formation make sense, the personnel makes sense. Only slight problem is none of the front 3 can head for toffee. For a 6'0 tall fella Gallagher is absolutely hopeless in the air.
Tommy G Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 I'd like to see a whole new formation. A MON 3-5-2 style with wing-backs.Something like this: Weale Morrison - Brown - HobbsN'Guessan-------------------------BernerOakley - King - Wellens Fryatt - Kermorgant But the weakness would certainly be on the right as we dont really have anyone who could play as a wing back on that side as N'Guessan is really a winger. Unless we played Neilson.... That wouldn't work - like you said we would get raped down the right.
C-man Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 That wouldn't work - like you said we would get raped down the right. Swap Oakley and N'Guessen round? I think M'Oakley at right-back could be a serious suggestion towards the end of his career.
Tommy G Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 Swap Oakley and N'Guessen round? I think M'Oakley at right-back could be a serious suggestion towards the end of his career. Maybe. but IMO you have to have specialist wing backs to play 5-3-2. Gone are the days of Steve Guppy I'm afraid. Something needs to change though I guess

Remember what Cloughie said, "if football was meant to be played in the sky, clouds would have grass on them".

Thracian Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 Weale, Morrison, Hobbs, Brown, Berner; Oakley, King, Wellens; Gallagher, Fryatt, Howard. That's about as experienced, functional and narrow as I can come up with short of a 5-4-1.
Vlad The Impaler Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 What I'd Play: GK. Weale RB. Morrison CB. Hobbs CB. Brown LB. Berner RM. Adams CM. Oakley CM. King LM. Dyer ST. Kermogant ST. Gallagher Pearson Will Play: GK. Weale RB. Morrison CB. Hobbs CB. Brown LB. Berner RM. Oakley CM. King CM. Wellens LM. Dyer ST. Kermogant ST. Fryatt I would love to see Adams back in the team personally, am a big fan. Would give us just what we need at this moment in time, abit of creativity and pace. If Pearson manages to somehow make the Oakley, King, Wellens and Dyer Midfield work though, i'd be chuffed. We played some great football against derby, we just lack that umph in my opinion. Either way we'll win it 4-1

That's about as experienced, functional and narrow as I can come up with short of a 5-4-1. And an added bonus, absolutely no pace whatsoever, anywhere, in any position. Nice.......

marbelladave Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 You can stick any names on the team sheet you want but until we allow our attacking players to get forward and attack nothing will change. We play plenty of attacking players but give them so much to do defensively that the barely threaten the opposition. Dyer wastes more than half the game covering Berner in his own half and when we deploy attacking players, N'Guessan or Gallagher, on the right they are required to play so deep the are practically wing backs! These players are all, above all else strikers, not defensive midfielders. They get criticised for their lack of production but they are often receiving the ball 40+ yards out and have to beat a midfielder or two before they can even start to attack the back 4.
Blue Bob Posted 19 October 2009 Posted 19 October 2009 We need some balance and pace. Oakley is ideal in central midfield to spray the ball about, he is poor on the wing as he never stays there and has no pace to beat a man. Wellans ideal as he is box to box and breaks up the play. Where was N'guessan? When I have seen him play he has had pace, can beat a man and puts in a reasonable ball - even Morrision had some change out there left back on Saturday so N'Guessan would have had some right fun. If not try Adams, he has done well when he has come on a sub. Dyer left wing, never seems to last a full game but hey 70 minutes and he stretches defence will do me. Howard, sorry not doing it for me. I would love to see Waghorn have a run, he looks good, strong, full of running and powerful and he can shoot. Fryatt OK but maybe to give way at 60 / 70 minyres and let DJ have a run if Fryatt has done nothing. Keeper and defence are unchanged.

Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 Bloody nora! I know. Think Crewe at home last season was my last trip "down the Walkers" as it were. Got the time off work so might as well go and see Yann Kermorgant in the flesh. Classic part timer.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 Outside chance of me going too. You and me?! Hell's just frozen over.
Samilktray Posted 20 October 2009 Posted 20 October 2009 You and me?! Hell's just frozen over. My outside chance is very small, but it would be a pretty big deal if we both rolled up at the Walkers.
