I was going to post about this.

To be honest I'm not suprised seeing as I'm from Bristol.

I've got to admit that a lot of Bristolians are really racist.

I'm not a racist person myself but I see racism around Bristol quite a lot.

P*** is like part of everyday language to a lot of Bristolians.

I actually know some of those boys that were beating those people up in the shop, they're well known Hartcliffe boys. They actually did something like that again the other week to a boy I know and his dad because they looked like 'p***s' to them. Bloody idiots to be honest.

Seen it?

It doesn't shock me, I wish it did.

Fvcking morons the lot of em but I'd probably get treated a lot worse if I was to up sticks and park my arse in one of Islamabads most run down estates.

This in no way condones the way these idiots behave but the production team went to a specific area of the UK to get a reaction and that is what they got. The whole programme was staged managed from start to finish.

I've a mate who's just returned from a three year stint in Islamabad. Amazingly, he never encountered one moment of problem. He was bored shitless, mind you.

Isn't the point of the program that they wanted to turn the public statement on its head; to demonstrate that not everyone lives in harmony with their neighbours? Sure, if they'd rented a house in Alum Rock for a fortnight then the worst that would have happened would have been a couple of dodgy take-aways...but the point of the program was to raise the issue of unprovoked attacks which exist as part and parcel of living on certain estates.

Far-Right apologists like Thracian will no-doubt contribute their own spin on this.

Nail on fvcking head.

I could send em to a thousand estates in the UK and they'd have no worries.

Southmead is chavtown personified and the whole estate is in need of some heavy investment.............

...........preferably with napalm

OR maybe there is still a real and genuine problem with Racism? regardless of any agenda the BBC have?

not intendng to be argumentative but;

i tried ti imply there was a genuine problem with racism ,

the bbc seem to be claiming to "uncovering" it after so many years of trying to relegate it to a mere daily mail inspired hysteria

Yes, the programme focused on racism, and the behaviour was shocking, but I thought it was more about underclass scum who couldn't behave themselves.

They just pick on people who are different or outsiders. In this case it was against these two Asians, but I got the impression anyone moving there as a stranger would have a hard time.

If a ginger northern woman with a limp moved in to that area, I have little doubt that she, too would suffer similar threats and lawlessness.

I was walking through one of Dundee's roughest estates in a suit a few weeks back, and the local kids practically descended on me, demanding cigarettes and money, threatening to brick my car and suggesting that if I thumped any of them, they would tell the police I was a paedo. I told them to fook right off and indicated that any damage to my car would result in the leader of the pack having his fuggin nose bitten right off.

Scum like that pick on people they think won't fight back.

I hate advocating lawless violence, but, in the absence of any help from the law (ha!), it is the only thing that the inhabitants of these places understand and respond to. You back down, like these reporters kept on doing in that programme, and you might as well bend over and ask the locals to smack you for fun.

It would all be depressing, except for the little girl who was nice to the female reporter and told her how pretty she was. I bet her Dad clipped her round the ear...

correct

such as fiona pilkington and her family

pity the bbc and the police seemed to think otherwise and can't be arsed to make a programme about them or listen to them until it's too late

I found the 11-year old acting threatening rather amusing.

It's not bewilderment these actions are causing to me. What can you do when you see that a portion of the English population still cannot tell left from right (or vice versa).

But in all honesty, this could happen (and probably does happen) in a lot of other (bigger) European countries up to this very day.

Mind you, I'm not from Pakistan, but would still count as an immigrant in the UK, albeit a European one...

if that is the case then apologies for reading your post wrongly!

I had to go to the Hospital in Southmead a couple of times last year, it exists just outside the "student bubble" and the stupidly nice bits of town and it's a bit of a shock when your surroundings change that much after a 5 minute bus ride.

Most programs like this are just another slant on 'Some people are idiots', though. Had they visited a lot of places and done some sort of representative sample, it might have been worthwhile. To move into a poor estate in a white-dominated city (during a recession) and to find racism is sad but not unsurprising.

10 minute walk from where I grew up. Appalling behaviour but I know black and asian meaders that have experienced 1 or 2 bits of racism there in their whole lives so it does seem a bit bizarre that these journalists managed to get harassed 50 times in 8 weeks. I guess if you grow up there then you're socialised into knowing what parts of the estate to keep your head down in etc.

So just because a lot of people aren't racist it isn't shocking that unpleasantly large portions of some communities still are that backwards in this country?

And what the fuck has bringing Islamabad into it got to do with anything if you aren't trying to make an "us and them" point? What goes on in Pakistan is no more relevant in this issue than what goes on on the moon. Whether or not there's prejudice in Pakistan, Chicago, Cape Town or Timbuktu it doesn't mean we should be any less shocked, disgusted or offended by having it in our own country and nor should be accepting of it or defending it for these reasons either.

What's that got to do with anything, we live in Britain, whether or not they are of Pakistani descent, makes no difference at all!!

FIrstly it was wrong for the 'racail equality so and so' to even suggest race is no longer an issue. Secondly the programme targetted a particularly horrid estate where prejudices were gonna be obvious. If you were to go to 'muslim' ghetto's in say oldham bradford etc, i'm sure 2 white people would suffer similar prejudice's, this programme just showed there's a link between poverty and ignorance, which we all knew!!

The programme added no real value, there was a programme not too long back where a white lady with makeup and aesthetics was transformed into an 'asain' lady, now that gave insight how race is percieved, it's fair to say it changed her life, she found being white was definitely advantagious and were treated far better then being an Asian. I think it was the DTI, who did a study on names, and if found 2 people with identical CV's but one with an asian name and one with a white name, the one with a white name was 75% more likely to get an interview then the asian counterpart!!

I watched that Panorama and it left me quite cold. I'm not going to pretend that I've come across moronic behaviour like that in my everday life, so I was quite shocked to see the behaviour, whether it was by a small group of people from the estate (which I think is probably closer to the truth), or a larger number on the estate.
