Just goes to show how injuries can ruin a season if we don't have suitable backup. The thing is for a club in our position McGivern is a suitable back up, someone who has earned a 1st choice spot wouldn't want to be a back up unless you paid them over the odds. And as we can now see he can cover for CB as well

So i dont see why there is a problem Pearson ''coaching'' him if its going to sort his positioning out amongst other things, after all this is one of the jobs of a manager! Some people need to realise he is only 19 and has barely any match experience at Premier League/Championship level. I think this could be a permanent signing in the summer and I for one would welcome that! It's unlikely Man City will keep him around so we could pick him up on the cheap. I think he'd be a good signing for us after (as you said) picks up some more match experience. Bit like Joe Hart really. He had hardly any game time, looked a bit shaky at first but halfway through his first season he looks very impressive. They must have a couple of youngsters who they'll let out on loan aswell as McGivern? That Weiss kid who scored against Arsenal looks decent, don't know much about him though.

I don't see why anyone would be scared to admit he was good if he was. Sheff Utd were poor in that first half and didn't really test him, but for me he still looked uncomfortable when faced with their oncoming winger.

I didn't say they were scared, just that people seem to get set in their ways it's like Wellens with some people he always gets top rating even when he's a had a generally poor game and all because he put in one very noticeable pass Irrespective of how Sheff Utd played he didn't do anything wrong and did a lot right and I think all FBs look uncomfortable when faced with an oncoming winger.

I agree that some people have favourites and non-favourites and mark them high or low without paying much attention to the overall performance, Wellens case in point as you say and on the flipside there's Neilson. We'll have to agree to disagree on the McGivern first half though, he didn't impress me.

Where do you sit, I'm low down in C and he was right in front of me so I had a good close up view, but as you suggest it's all down to individual perception.

Was sitting in the west stand so you had a far closer look at his performance. Don't get me wrong I thought he was steady enough (steadier than previous outings), but I just never felt comfortable with his defending on the ground, and when I rate full-backs 80% of my mark is based on their defending.

He's doing the job that NP requires of him and is deemed best placed to do that at this moment in time. Whether the guy will ever be a premiership player is still in his hands but he's learning his trade and I don't mind that he's doing it with us, as long as NP is happy who are we to judge! KFS Posted 2 January 2010 Posted 2 January 2010 What do you think of this kid. My personal opinion is that he needs to get out, he doesn't seem to be covering at all well in defence. The goal we conceded against Sheffield United was his fault, he should have been in for the clearance. I know we don't have Berner and Brown but surely there is another option.
