MC Prussian Posted 12 January 2010 Posted 12 January 2010 The first few times I'd heard of the then-unknown McGivern and seen him play, I wasn't too convinced. Maybe I was blinded by the "Manchester City Academy" label and thus had high expectations, too (no, I don't base my opinion on FM ratings). Didn't see him fitted for the shirt as left-back. Since coming aboard, his positioning has been mostly awful, his defending rather poor and - just like Neilson - he's not the fastest. Distribution woeful at times, crossing is not his strength. And, at he's probably too tall for a wide defender. Then again, we're looking at a now 20-year old lad. And I guess him coming from a Premiership club and us aspiring to maintain a high level of football, there's a certain demanding atmosphere all around. To cut Ryan McGivern some slack: The guy can only get better and I'd say there are signs of improvements, although for a spectator, he can still be frustrating to watch. But what am I expecting? Eleven Pélés in Leicester City shirts? I also recently heard about Neilson being a LCB originally, so maybe that explains why he has such a hard time coping with a switch to the flank.

With Tunchev out we don't have a really good left CB when Hobbs has played there he's looked as bad as when he played RB his best and only position is Right CB. I just can't take to Brown, sure he can defend high balls into the box and stick his boot in but other than that he's just not right for modern football and for most of the teams we play against. Frankly I'd sooner give McGivern a run in the Left CB position to see if he's up to it because Brown should be seen as a very short term solution especially if we aspire to bigger and better things.

Everytime Hobbs has played the left CB he's been pretty awful. I think as a footballer McGivern has more to offer than Brown. It seems to me too many people are not prepared to look beyond initial impressions. Brown's living off the back of a few gungho appearances where he picked up an antihero style worship, McGivern started out as a raw youngster, unfit (match wise), unused to the Championship, little knowledge of team mates style and abilities and has had some poor performances. but if people can't see that he's improving and that maybe he has more in his locker given time then I think they are deluding themselves based on those first performances. I'm not suggesting he's the longer term solution, only time will tell but he has the greater potential where as Brown is only going one way and that's backwards.

I don't agree with the statement in bold, he's been ripped to shreds by pacy wingers running at him 1 on 1, particularly in his earlier games. He's young and needs time to settle but may never be a fullback.

Brown brings little to the side bar a physical presence. This has been helpful on occasions this season but he is currently well off the pace and shown up by more mobile opposition. That leaves Morrison and Hobbs as the better choice, whichever war round they play, they are both young and should be able to adapt. The Brown - Hobbs pairing has been flaky all season, I pointed this out back in September (and got roundly abused for it) saying that we would remain vulnerable until it is sorted out but without Tunchev this will be difficult. NP's inherently conservative approach combined by our elevated league position will mean that little will change unless forced by injury or suchlike. An unsettled defense makes for on unsettled team, worrying with the run of tough games coming up.
