CosbehFox Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 I don't agree with the statement in bold, he's been ripped to shreds by pacy wingers running at him 1 on 1, particularly in his earlier games. He's young and needs time to settle but may never be a fullback. People say this but I personally believe he's never played with a midfielder who puts some effort backtracking in and secondly, he's one of the few players we have who attempts to get stuck into an attacker (Hobbs and Brown being two who stand off).

Yes his distribution was ropey but that shouldn't be prior concern at all, instead the fact that at full-back he can't seem to tackle or cut out crosses or muscle off a winger. I think two of the main reasons why this guy has made it as a pro are: 1) he's left-footed and there's a shortage in football 2) he's tall and decent in the air so why am i not playing professionally then? I'm a lanky git who's left footed.

This has been helpful on occasions this season but he is currently well off the pace and shown up by more mobile opposition. That leaves Morrison and Hobbs as the better choice, whichever war round they play, they are both young and should be able to adapt.The Brown - Hobbs pairing has been flaky all season, I pointed this out back in September (and got roundly abused for it) saying that we would remain vulnerable until it is sorted out but without Tunchev this will be difficult. NP's inherently conservative approach combined by our elevated league position will mean that little will change unless forced by injury or suchlike. An unsettled defense makes for on unsettled team, worrying with the run of tough games coming up. Now I'm really confused - are you calling for further unsettling of the defence or worrying about our unsettled defence? You can't really do both.

Very painful! I know players become scapegoats too easily these days but I now feel things are often going the other way and people try to be different by claiming underperforming players are actually good and that the majority of fans are missing something. Not the case here, Ryan McGivern is utter crap. He's not like the other players mentioned (Blake, Williams, Low et al - yes, all terrible). They were either lazy or just didn't have the ability required. McGivern is all of these, plus cocky and uncomitted as far as I can tell. The left-back is still having problems with a calf injury and will not make the trip to Wales. Berner has not featured since picking up the injury in the 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday more than a month ago. He was ready to return against Sheffield United as a second-half substitute in the Boxing Night clash but suffered a recurrence of the injury. Before his setback, the former Blackburn Rovers utility player had been one of City's most consistent performers. Manchester City loanee Ryan McGivern will continue to deputise for Berner, but there could be a change in the other full-back berth. Robbie Neilson may pay the heaviest price for City's disappointing display in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich last weekend – by losing his place. Manager Nigel Pearson may consider switching Michael Morrison to the right side and re-instate Jack Hobbs alongside Wayne Brown. Pearson has no further injury worries and seems unlikely to alter the make-up of the midfield or front-two partnership of Steve Howard and Matty Fryatt. Swansea have been out of action since losing to City in the FA Cup third round at the Walkers Stadium on January 2. Leicester did play last weekend but Pearson said it was difficult to assess if it would have an impact on the outcome of the clubs' third meeting this season, with his side holding a 2-0 advantage. "We'll have to wait and see, but it is another tough match for us," said the City boss. "They are a passing side who can pose problems. Now I thought one of the basic tactics of playing 442 with fullbacks pushing up was when one went up the other stayed back leaving you with 3 defenders against 2 attackers - ok maybe a simplification but the principle stands. The problem becomes critical if the attacks keep breaking down and the defence is caught out with more than the 3:2 ratio that's when the FB is seen as 'getting caught out of position' Seems to me if we learnt to keep possession and made sure that with that possession we got into the oppositions penalty area more often than not we wouldn't have FBs being continually caught out of position. That's not to say McGivern hasn't got a lot to learn but it certainly says the team as a whole has really got to improve on it's possession retention. Of course that starts with less hoofing from the back, less misplaced passes from Oakley, Wellens and Gallagher and Fryatt to be more aware of who's supporting him amongst many improvement opportunities there for the taking.

I personally think you're being overly kind to McGivern and what you're saying seems to me just a weak excuse. Robbie Neilson and Michael Morrison both get up and support attacks from the opposite side but are far more competent in defence. For me personally, 80-85% of a full-backs job is to defend, and if you can't defend then you're going to get criticised. The thing is we've had Berner who is everything McGivern isn't in defence; he cuts out crosses, he muscles of wingers, he makes tackles > all of which is pro-active defending. Maybe I'm being overly critical but the only time I've ever seen McGivern do any proper pro-active defending was at centre-half. What makes it worse for McGivern is that Berner is better in attack too.
lcfc_jme Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 I think McGivern is a bright-haired sad sack of shit and actually offers nothing good to any football club he'll ever appear for. No positional sense, useless with the ball at his feet, an inability to tackle and less pace than Robbie Neilson. The only good thing I'll say about him is he knows how to pick special fucking agents, that's for sure.
