Matt Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 There will not be a lot of transfer activity at Leicester City this month, manager Nigel Pearson has said.Ever since the January transfer window opened, speculation has linked City with several potential targets, while other clubs have also been linked with moves for some of City's stars. Pearson has already secured the services of striker Martyn Waghorn and defender Ryan McGivern on loan until the end of the season, while DJ Campbell and Max Gradel have been allowed to remain with Derby and Leeds on short-term loans. However, Pearson said he does not expect there to be much more transfer movement this month. "I know there is speculation but I don't get involved in speculation," he said. "What you have to ask yourself is where are the stories generated? Until there is something to share with people I don't get involved in the speculation. "There has been talk about some of our players but, at this moment in time, there is nothing to report. Ryan has done very well for us so I am pleased to get that agreed with Manchester City. "Paul Dickov has been fine since he came back from his loan spell at Derby and again we will see how his situation develops over the next few weeks. But I don't expect to be doing a lot of business." One of the reasons Pearson will not making too many additions this month is because he is happy with his current squad, who are nicely positioned at the halfway stage of the season in fifth place on 38 points, with a game in hand on the other sides in the play-off places. Pearson believes City deserve their lofty position but is expecting a very busy and difficult second half of the campaign. "We are halfway through the season now, 23 games in, and I think we are where we are on merit," he said. "We have competed pretty well and we have scrapped well from time to time. We have also played very well on a number of occasions. "I have said from the very start of the season that this league is very difficult to be consistent in. "It is competitive and there are a lot of clubs that would probably think they have a chance of being involved in the promotion shake-up, and that in itself sets it up to be a fascinating league. "You don't always get the quality week in, week out that you would like, but every game is a challenge. We are going to be very busy, as most clubs will be, in late January, February and early March. "Most clubs will find themselves in a similar situation and you have to get on with it.'' Leicester City's Championship match away to Doncaster has been re-arranged for Tuesday, February 23. The match, originally scheduled for December 28, was called off because of bad weather and rearranged for Tuesday, January 19, depending on Rovers' FA Cup third-round tie against Brentford. However, that game also fell victim to the weather. Leicester Mercury/The Blue Army.
lou Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 So much for MM saying he'll invest if were still there or there abouts come January! Why am I not surprised?
Head Honcho Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 Can't argue with that. Although I'm sure if he was given any dollar to spend then he would!
davieG Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 I think he's just talking prices down in reaction to Mandaric's 'buying Beckham' statement which would have given clubs the feeling he was prepared to spend millions and had the effect of pushing up prices. Pearson's just issuing an I'm not panicking or paying high prices for players. Once again Mandaric proves, probably unintentionally that he's not quite sorted out football 'speak' if he's going to say something he really should stick to one sentence statements. However, Mandaric said City would not sell and has even promised to personally dig deep if Pearson decided there was a player who could really bolster his side's push for the play-offs."We are not selling any of our players who are contributing this season," he said. "We have a couple of good players who are not with the team and he is trying to find a home for them. That is what he is referring to when he says wheeling and dealing. "Nigel will be the first to say he doesn't want to just accumulate players, because he does have good players already. "But if there is a real need and a player like David Beckham or someone like him is available, and then Nigel says he must really have that player, then there will be no problem. I would support him 100 per cent. "I would have to put my hands in my pocket but I already do that. When you are losing money every year it has to come from somewhere. Let's not kid ourselves. "He wouldn't come to me and say he had to have a certain player just for the sake of it. I know that if he asked it would be because he genuinely needed that player. Then I would be there.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 The thing is (and this has been mentioned MANY times on here) there's naff all to buy in the January transfer window. Anyone who is doing any good at their club is not going to be up for sale unless someone stumps up much more than their actual worth. The only good players that clubs might part with are those whose contracts are up in the summer and whom they think they have no chance of keeping and they fancy the cash for them. In which case you usually need to be a bigger club than the selling club, otherwise the player would wait until summer to move as a free agent. So NP is very sensible. But we know that already, don't we?

But wouldn't it be better for Pearson and Mandaric to stop their guff and just say this? All this - 'I will back him with millions of pounds if he finds the right player' is just a load of cock.
Edmund Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 I see this as a brilliant confident boost to the team. Every fan of every club wants to see new players come in, it's the nature of the game but what they forget is it can have a detrimental effect on current players. It shows loyalty and hopefully the players respond with good performances for the manager. On the other hand it could cause complacency but it depends on the personality of the player.

The club "may" buy players in the window, but they need to move DJ & or Dickov first! Mandaric is not piling Millions into the club, especially for transfers! Mandaric will sell the club "if" we get into the Prem, at the earliest opportunity Mandaric is a businessman, not a Leicester fan!
Sniffer-Clarke Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 Which imo sums it up MM & NP would be happy with a mid table finish this season and decent run in the FA cup anything else would be a bonus. b
surrifox Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 why the anxiety? No clubs are doing much business at the mom.- it's not as if we are losing out to other clubs because we won't compete for players. NP does not sound particularly bothered. I suspect there may be a loan or two though

I suspect there may be a loan or two though IMO We need to strengthen, if promotion is a genuine ambition. At both full back positions we need cover, badly! Berner & Morrisson (not a Fbk) are fine at Full back but after that, we are woefully short on quality as Forest showed us <_< . That really is the essential problem that needs fixing. Anything else is a wish list, but good cover is a need not a wish.

We are lacking a certain something in the side to make us true promotion contenders and not just play-off hopefuls. It all depends what the ambition is coupled with the available budget. The squad we currently have can get us promoted, but it would need most of the players to out-perform themselves to do so.
Smerklo Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 Christ! I saw the headline 'Pearson expects quiet January' and read it as 'Pearson expects quit January'. Almost had a heart attack!

I know what you mean but I read it more as don't get sucked in by all the hype, I'll buy someone if I need to and Milan will fund it but won't be buying for the sake of it.

maddog Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 I would say we need to make a couple of quality signings, if we do the playoff place could be virtually guaranteed. If MM wants to sell us if we get back to the Prem, then surely he will put his hand in his pocket and go for the Prem this season. I just don't understand it. Theres no guarantee we will find ourselves in this position in the League half way through next season if we remain in the Championship.
dandannieldanok Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 Theres no guarantee we will find ourselves in this position in the League half way through next season if we remain in the Championship. Couldn't agree more, and this it what bugs me about people on here when they say they're not bothered about trying to go up this season, just long-term consolidation and build up to it in seasons to come. Some people seem to take it for granted that if we missed out this season we'll be back up here next season.
CosbehFox Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 Rather disappointed there's been no suggestion of a couple of loanees to supplement what's there.

Maybe MM is waiting for next season because he thinks we can't beat teams like Newcastle and West Brom, looks like there might be some real shit coming down (and all totally bankrupt). PS. this is a joke

Equally you're making a judgement about our ability to cope in the Premiership next season.
dandannieldanok Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 Equally you're making a judgement about our ability to cope in the Premiership next season. I'm not saying that we'd either be able to cope or not, the fact is nobody will know until we get there. I just don't see how sitting in the championship finding any old excuse not to go for promotion is ever going to make us ready for the premiership.
lou Posted 13 January 2010 Posted 13 January 2010 Im just one of those negative fans who would rather spend another season in this league than end up like Derby. Ok we may get promoted and do extremely well and stay up there for a few seasons.... I can only judge on what I see currently, week in week out. Based upon what I see, were not going to OK in the Premiership, we would struggle. Unless MM (or, more likely, whichever non-footballing business man he sells us to) spends a hell of a lot of money in the Summer and hikes up the players wages accordingly. So we end up in even more debt (like Pompey, Hull, West Ham etc etc) and its STILL no guarantee we'll stay up. Im not sure I want that risk to my beloved club to be honest. Not to mention the costs of S/T will rocket as will the away ticket prices which cost me a fortune as it is. I just dont get why being in the Premiership is the be all and end all. Id rather have LCFC continue in existance than end up bankrupt in a failed attempt to be a Premiership regular. Anyway thats my opinion thats all, not saying anyones is right or wrong

I also don't want our club to go bankrupt but theres a long way to go until that happens and so many variables. I'm not fussed about PL regulars, just a season or two back there to play against some of the big boys, lets just go on loan to the Premiership like we did with League One.
