Fosse Fox Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Terry and Upson solid, thing that scares me is that they both play on the left - which you could see at one point when they both came over to the left. Ashley Cole was awesome again, Glen Johnson can't really defend Although Defoe scored, he doesn't get that involved and the ball doesn't stick when its little -- little. Lampard also better. Better performance, but it wasn't great, think if we meet Germany, it will be very tough. Another buffoon. Scoring just as easy as taking a corner, a throw in or just kicking off is it? Wish someone would tell that to Lampard, Heskey and the world class Rooney... none of whom would have converted Defoe's chance.
LCFC-ARAB Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Really enjoyed teh first half of the Algeria game, I honestly thought we would go on and win We were playing some good football USA got unlucky a few times and i thought it was gunna be our day I'm glad England won Looks like i'll be supporting them now!
AyewJoking Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 And no doubt you would have marked him higher if he had not registered but had performed 'well'. It's you and your ilk in the blazers that are England's real problem I'm flattered, I thought I was just a nobody giving his opinion on a forum where people are supposed to give their opinions. Fair do's to De Foe, he did alot of running and I'm sure he was a pain in the backside for the Slovenia defence and he cant help it when we put long, high balls up for him to try and win against players who are taller than he. The important thing is he scored so I'm sure he'll start the next game.
marbelladave Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 sorry, MD, but i think you are guilty of hypocrisy here. whilst by no means a 'great' performance, given the circumstances that was a lot better a performance than piss-poor, phases of the game we played some lovely football and every played stood up and was counted. so i call 'over-reaction' on your part. i know you're on a perpetual football downer this WC, but i think there was a lot more to take out of this game than it being a '****up' there's a long way to go, but IMO we are certainly improving and could easily have spanked them by a 3 or 4 goal margin. Slovenia were pretty poor today, we were a little better but still only won 1-0. The excuses are trotted out, but they are always the same excuses, time after time. The 'lovely football' was in very short supply, the rotten passing and aimless hoofs were not. Gerrard and Rooney played almost exclusively for themselves, selfish and wasteful throughout. Lampard was little better but Barry had a 'mare, there were no real signs that our occasional better play could be sustained for any length of time. Put simply is was a ****up that a poor result has thrown away the advantage that we would have had from wiinning the group, all we needed was another goal or two and we could not even manage that. My poor mood comes from the simple belief that despite everything we have enough good players in England who, properly selected, prepared and motivated could have breezed this group and made the semi's with some style. That is an opinion I have held for some time, but I accept that is is just an opinion!
Benji Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Glad we won obviously. Have to say I thought that was the first game I've seen this world cup where any team's fans, and to a degree even SA, have outsung the vuvuzelas. Top support and a real credit, especially when u think how hard up people are at the minute.
Jordan Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 The artist currently known as Fosse Fox really thinks I really called him racist against black people. Wow. I'll say he's anti-Englis, maybe, but I'd never seriously go that far.

The Doctor Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 The over reactions from people are an absolute joke. Since when was mediocrity and finishing second a cause to go wild and have parades and parties? it's probably better than seeing all the flags flying at half mast like they were this morning not sure the "at all" is needed there and i'm pretty sure heinz muller is german (the one who used to be barnsley's keeper?)
Wycombe Fox Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 The over reactions from people are an absolute joke. Since when was mediocrity and finishing second a cause to go wild and have parades and parties? Not really an over-reaction. Maybe it's a sensible reaction by people who realise that we're not actually as good as some people and the media make out. Supporters of footballing nations who progress beyond their technical abilities react in this way i.e. parades and parties. I'm out to party!

Lillehamring Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 for what it's worth - germany have not looked that special at all.
Guest Bilo Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 for what it's worth - germany have not looked that special at all. No, only after a wonder goal did they look in control. Nevertheless, I can see only one outcome from Sunday.
Jordan Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 WTF? Forget history--the slates are wiped clean in the next round. How could you concede defeat that easily?
Webbo Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 How could you concede defeat that easily? It's partly frustration that we didn't get knocked out today so they could say how crap we are.
marbelladave Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 ok, i guess i just took more from the game than you, and i would say largely because, for the first time in ages, i really enjoyed watching this game- perhaps, it helps having seen very few of the qualifying matches I used to get to a fair few England games, though not so much since I returned to England in the summer of 2008. Despite living in north west London I only saw 2 or 3 of the qualifiers under Capello but was generally quite impressed. The discipline imposed by the manager gave us a shape and a purpose that we had not seen for some years and although I did not agree with everything he did I thought we were moving forward. As I said in a post elsewhere, I thought things started going wrong at the start of 2009/10 when we started to drift into our old ways and several of our 'big' players started to 'phone in' their performances. However we continued to win (mostly), qualifying was a formality and little criticism was forthcoming. The steady decline since sept/oct 2009 has seen our passing game largely disappear and seemingly the re-emergence of the untouchables, Capello's discipline appears to have morphed into some kind of oppressive, even repressive regime where fear of making a mistake blights even our best players. Like most England fans I was encouraged by our performance in qualifying and the views described above only really hit home in the warm up to the Tournament and were, confirmed in our play in the opening games. Whilst I do not buy into any of this 'World Class Players' bullshit I am quite sure that the players we have are capable of putting in a decent performance, not good enough to win the thing but good enough to give one or two more fancied teams a serious game. How we get that out of them is anybodies guess, but I did suggest, about a week or so ago, that a Round of 16 tie against Germany might just be the thing to elicit that performance, but that was before I saw England's first 3 games which have come close to convincing me that we simply do not have that ability. Yes I know it is knock out football and that pretty much anything can happen but at this stage I find it hard to believe it will. That said I am already trying to re-organise my weekend to leave Sunday afternoon free, so you can see I have not given up all hope!
C-man Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 No, only after a wonder goal did they look in control. Nevertheless, I can see only one outcome from Sunday. ''History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.''
Guest Bilo Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 ''History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.'' A bit of Churchillian spirit wouldn't go amiss on Sunday I must admit. We shall fight in South Africa. We shall fight in the penalty area, We shall fight with growing confidence and strength in the air! We shall defend our goal, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight in the centre circle We shall fight on the corners We shall fight on the touchlines We shall sing on the terraces And in the streets We shall sing in the pubs We shall NEVER surrender! (Apologies to Winston Churchill and German friends, but you get the picture!)
Benji Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Mexico were doing it a fair bit in their last couple of games Mehico Mehico la la la

I'll say he's anti-Englis, maybe, but I'd never seriously go that far. Jordan, you protest too much. Not that being called a racist bothers me mind as it gives me an opportunity to offload. Can't resist a bit of the old Socratic sparring.
Jordan Posted 24 June 2010 Posted 24 June 2010 Haha, now I really want to call you a racist, "just because!" Anyway, I can say with utmost certainty that I have never before seen or heard of scenes like this across the United States in my lifetime. Never. (edit to add this link to balance the viewpoints: the reaction in Iraq)
Fox92 Posted 24 June 2010 Posted 24 June 2010 Another buffoon. Scoring just as easy as taking a corner, a throw in or just kicking off is it? Wish someone would tell that to Lampard, Heskey and the world class Rooney... none of whom would have converted Defoe's chance. To be honest, I don't understand the first line. Plus, I think it's unfair to say that about 3 players. Ok, Lampard hasn't played to well but I did say that his performance was an improvement from the previous games. I agree that Rooney hasn't done anything at the minute, seeing as the 'world class' bit was abit sarcastic, but he has been injured and its unfair to have a go at Heskey when Defoe can't do what Heskey does - hold it up and flick it on. I was stating that the ball doesn't really stick when its little - little. But, I did say its an improvement. What do I know, eh? Im 'another buffoon'.
