Lillehamring Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Its going to be Germany in the last 16, it is just meant to be.... As i've said before on paper we shouldn't fear the Germans at all, after all most of the England players will have regularly played and beaten the German starting 11 in the Champions League, apart from Bayerns freak run this year, but as a team, we are still quite a way from our potential whereas the Germans have looked far more together and cohesive (as always) despite their defeat to the Serbs. By not going for the big win which was easily their for the taking (Slovenia were there for a pasting, especially first half) and looking past the last 16 which will be a 50-50 who goes through, we are then looking at a game against Argentina potentially if luck is on our side and we make it that far. Whereas if we'd gotten the second goal we would be looking at a game against Ghana (England has never lost to an African team) and then the winner of Uruguay vs South Korea with the favourites being Uruguay. So due to that lack of courage to push forward and get another we are now facing Germany and Argentina instead of Ghana and Uruguay....i know which one id have opted for if i was manager. Still at least we are through, C'MON ENGLAND! but you just said germany were beatable. and as for a lack of courage - we had 65% possession, 11 shots on target and 11 corners and hit the post at least once - that's hardly sitting back is it? especially given the lack of ambition in the previous tie.
Lillehamring Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Christ, what an over reaction. (Pundits on on TV and Radio mainly) Another piss poor performance against a very limited and unambitious Slovenia. Without ever playing very well we should have scored 2 or 3 but dire finishing left us hanging on, just. An awful lot of our players really did not look good, against a better side they really were not good enough. James was decent and solid. Johnson blew hot and cool as usual. Terry looked uncomfortable on the right and Upson was not that comfortable either, until 'that' tackle. Cashley was excellent, still a nasty little shit though. Milner did nothing before the cross but was much better thereafter. Lampard and Barry were both poor, Lampard much as usual, Barry still a long way from his best. Gerrard worked hard and was heavily involved but with all his misplaced passes he remains a liabilty. Rooney still miles off his best and as usual, Defoe did absolutely nothing bar score one and almost score another. Go figure. Furthermore our failure to score more goals gave away a relatively easy route to the semi's for a more interesting route, taking in (in all probability) Germany, Argentina and Spain. We might have won but at the end of the day it was yet another ****up! sorry, MD, but i think you are guilty of hypocrisy here. whilst by no means a 'great' performance, given the circumstances that was a lot better a performance than piss-poor, phases of the game we played some lovely football and every played stood up and was counted. so i call 'over-reaction' on your part. i know you're on a perpetual football downer this WC, but i think there was a lot more to take out of this game than it being a '****up' there's a long way to go, but IMO we are certainly improving and could easily have spanked them by a 3 or 4 goal margin.
Salieri Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 One thing I would like to point out is that Spain are far from certain to win their group. If they don't, that would mean a tie between Chile and Portugal in Round 2, who would go on to meet the winners of the clash between Group F's winner (almost certainly Paraguay) and the Group E runners-up (Denmark or Japan). If we can get through the last 16, defeat Argentina in the quarters (who crumbled in similar circumstances in 2006) then we would actually have the softer of the possible semi-finals. So finishing second in the group could well be a blessing in disguise. I was on a high when England won, but my mood blackened on hearing the Yanks had equalised. Reading this though has cheered me up somewhat, cheers. The above could well come true, and coupled with Germany failing to beat Ghana tongiht and that equaliser for U.S.A may yet prove a blessing in disguise.
Dames Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 The over reactions from people are an absolute joke. Since when was mediocrity and finishing second a cause to go wild and have parades and parties?
Salieri Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 The over reactions from people are an absolute joke. Since when was mediocrity and finishing second a cause to go wild and have parades and parties? Admittedly i haven't read through the whole of this thread, but from what i have read, i haven't seen any massive over reactions. Just people being pleased that we have qualified and speculating who we may play in the next round(s).

We might have won but at the end of the day it was yet another ****up! Be thankful for small mercies Mr Costa - if it wasn't for the unappreciated Defoe (and his West African genes) the game would have been scoreless. And if it hadn't been for Johnson's sleight of anatomy at the death (he clearly brought down some Slovene or other in the box just before Upson's epic challenge) we could all be keening over a national humiliation. Someone like Defoe is literally worth their weight in gold to a team like England that struggles to both create and convert chances. This is where the real problem lies, not in some imagined Gerrard - Rooney disconnect. PS Must take my hat off to the 'Reliant Robin' who did more than a passable imitation of Becks today even if he is six foot shorter - so apologies to him for dissing him earlier. PPS Milner's proclivity for crosses does revive the purist's nightmare - the Crouchinho option...

Who shat in your custard? We're through to the next round with a chance to progress. We've not had a lot to cheer about uptil now in this world cup. Stop being such a miserable <unt.

Watching on the news there just seems to be a carnival atmosphere now and i really don't know why? Its not the biggest achievement in football especially considering the circumstances. Maybe if we got past the quarters then it might not be as much of an embarrassment.

Koke Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Still think not finishing 1st will bite us in the backside. I think USA will go further than England. Very very good performance today though, but we really should have finished 1st.

Libertine Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 The annoying thing is, because we've won, Fabio will end up sticking with the same side for the next game. And I'm not sure it'll work against someone decent.

I think it's called relief and it's hot sunny summers day, people have probably taken a day off work and got together to watch so why not enjoy/take advantage of the situation and have a party. Does one even need an excuse to have party on a day like today anyway.
Leicfox Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Germany, Ghana, Serbia.....Who cares? If we really do have a chance of winning this, we need to beat the better sides....... I reckon we'll win every game 1-0 from now untill we lift the cup.
Jimothy Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Much better performance today, but that wasn't hard after Fridays shambles. Some good points, Upson played surprisingly well, Cole was again our best player. Gerrard bossed the game and Milner and Defoe both played well. There were some not so good point, Johnson looks a bit leggy, really looked off the pace, (but to his credit covered well in the second half when Cole went forward), Rooney still looks off the pace, and Lampard and Barry had the passing range of an U-11 team. Happy we're through though. Don't really care who we get in the last 16 and possibly beyond. We'll have to play much better to get past anyone else we are likely to meet. Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, South Korea, Serbia, Ghana or Denmark are as likely to knock us out as some of the "top" teams if we keep playing the way we have been. So Germany, Ghana or Serbia next, doesn't matter who, we need to play much better.
AyewJoking Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Much improved performance. Disappointing we couldnt score a second and kill the game off. This lead to yet more squeaky bums and in the end we squeezed through rather than cruised. I'd fancy our chances against Australia, Serbia or Ghana but fear Germany could spank us. James 6 not overly busy but did nothing wrong and looked solid. Johnson 6 clumbsy in the challenge but he provided a threat. Cole 6 another satisfactory game from him. Terry 7 immense Upson 7 best game in an england shirt Milner 7 shaky start but grew in stature, crossed for de foes goal. Gerrard 7 stayed in position and linked well with rooney Lampard 5 offers nothing to the england cause Barry 6 gave the ball away and still half a yard off the pace Rooney 6 best game yet but still someway off his best. De Foe 6 worked hard and his goal masked what otherwise would have been an average performance. Heskey 5 no time to make an impact. Cole 5 next to useless but at least fabio put him on!
Fosse Fox Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 a cocktail of sorts of adrenaline and Budweiser will mean that my post will be devoid of any strategical and tacitcal analysis. 1) The better team won the USA-Algeria match. 2) Big-time players show up in big-time moments. Landon Donovan is a big-time bad mutha****a and y'all need to recognize. 3) I never had any doubt that England would win. I was shocked to find that they'd only scored 1... tbh I was more impressed with Algeria in the first two games than Slovenia (besides finishing) even though les Fennecs only took one point. Only a Medjani fvck-up cost them a well-deserved point, and what a difference M'Bolhi made 'twixt the sticks. 4) In the 91st minute, I was on my knees with my head on the ground, thinking that this was a most unfortunate WC for the rugged U.S. team that played quite well, but possibly a quite lucrative WC for U.S. and M'gladbach midfielder Michael Bradley, who absolutely bossed it in the midfield. Again. Cheers. We had a perfectly good Dempsey goal disallowed today, too, but I can't complain too much as I thought it was offside while watching live. Replays proved both myself and the linesman wrong. Tsk, tsk. To be fair, there were poor decisions today that went both ways, and DeMerit (who was a BEAST) got away with a bear-hug in the box, but how there wasn't a red card + penalty when Dempsey got punched in the face (Belhadj IIRC) in the 81st or thereabouts is beyond me. Not necessarily--there are several solid sides in that group. But in the 91st minute, if anyone had told me the U.S. could get out of the group stage on the condition that they'd have to play 1970 Brazil on speed, I'd have said, "Yes," before s/he could finish that question. --- Fosse Fox, I can see my cheap joke went right over your head Your boy, marabelladave, got it! But, to be fair, I was a media studies student, indeed. So, you're 1-for-2, which albeit, a small sample size, is still a solid performance... for a baseball player. BTW I love commas (and Landon Donovan). As with the validity of conceptual art, any comment could be deemed 'ironic' if someone says it is. However, next time I hear a semi literate Prof of Cultural Theory drone on about 'racist' bio determinism I'll take comfort in the fact that he is having a 'cheap joke' at my expense, even if he doesn't think he is. Now how about that for multi layered irony eh?

WardyisPukka Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 better but not up to standard still!! Milner-made a difference , passing and tackling back!! Gerrard, created chances , shud of put his foot through the ball instead of trying to be fancy and placing it!! Terry- made vital blocks barry was non existent , lampard cudnt really get into the game

Does one even need an excuse to have party on a day like today anyway. Exactly my thoughts. It's a natural high, like when Leicester win 1-0 against Timbucktoo in the middle of November away from home....I come back in the motor smiling. Rather decent performance, we must really starting hitting the back of the net though and we currently lack a mobile, physical presence up front. Really think today's result said a lot about the opposition...Slovenia had full-backs who wanted to bomb on and we're to pay. If Germany or whoever be positive against us, we'll have a chance.
CosbehFox Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 shame croatia could equalize at all but heinz muller of luxembourg - scotland almost certain to go out to the first team symbolisingfootballers
Fox92 Posted 23 June 2010 Posted 23 June 2010 Terry and Upson solid, thing that scares me is that they both play on the left - which you could see at one point when they both came over to the left. Ashley Cole was awesome again, Glen Johnson can't really defend Although Defoe scored, he doesn't get that involved and the ball doesn't stick when its little -- little. Lampard also better. Better performance, but it wasn't great, think if we meet Germany, it will be very tough.
