Slovenia v England & USA v Algeria - Weds - BBC @ 3.00

Unfair.

We had some dreadful luck in front of goal and on another day we'd have won by four or five. We'll see how much better Germany are tonight against a strong Ghanaian side, and we look much more confident than before. I thought Germany were pretty dire against Serbia and on that form, I'd fancy England to progress.

germany could quite easily go out - i can see serbia beating the aussies and germany would then need to win.

I cant believe it, as I said never write the yanks off the strength of mind is fantastic.

Although it pains me to say they do deserve to top the group and have been pretty unlucky.

You just know germany will win and we'll get them I guess thats only right that the US should now face a poorer team. They now have a great draw and wouldnt surprise me if they do well.

shame slovenia could equalize at all but landon donovan :D - england almost certain to play germany and go out to the first good team they face - as per usual.

Thinking neither the USA nor Algeria would score for good, Slovenia were playing for a draw (very evident as today's game progressed further and further) and could've gotten an equalizer on about three occasions, but the finishing was very selfish.

They've been almost as harmless as their group counterparts from the qualifying stages, Slovakia.

Another example of justice in football, U.S. winning the group when they could've sealed a win against the Slavs earlier in the tournament if it hadn't been for poor officiating.

Now... Germany???

One thing I have to say about England - cannot afford to waste chances like Rooney today and although the overall team performance was quite an improvement compared to the first two games, you ought to keep an eye on your back four.

That wouldn't be the biggest surprise. Germany look a bit suspect at the back and Ghana have impressed so far, beating the Serbia side that made Germany look ordinary. A Ghana-Serbia 1-2 wouldn't be a massive shock.

Better performance from the team. The back 4 were superb especially Cole and Terry. The additions of Milner and Defoe made the difference to the team and is possibly the sole reason why we won today.

Still there are some negatives, Barry and Lampard were awful yet again. Rooney was ineffectual besides 1 good lay off and wasting a chance that would have been easier to score and still why on earth can't he control the ball properly or beat his man?

We still need to make major improvements if we are to get past whoever we play in the next round to reach the quarters.

Rooney... still poor!

i thought he worked pretty hard, at least compared to the last game - in fact i thought he went to the other extreme and held onto the ball a couple of times when an easy better pass was on.

no, no complaints with anyone today - credit to james too for solidly dealing with a fair few long range potentially dodgy free kicks

How good was Terry literally throwing himself head first in that second half melee? Absolutely brilliant.

Relief that we're through, shame that it's not as group winners.

My ratings.

James - 7 Bastion of confidence, never looked like getting beaten today.

Johnson - 7 As good defensively as he was going forwards

Terry - 8 An absolute rock, won every header he went in for and even tried to block a low shot with a flying header.

Upson - 7 Challenge at the end is one of the main reasons we'll be playing in the last 16, Looks a lot better than Carragher and can also pass the ball forward.

Cole - 8 Owned his side of the pitch.

Milner - 7 Cracking cross for the goal, worked hard.

Lampard - 5 Didn't really impose himself and passing ranged from mediocre to bad.

Barry - 5 Same as above but his passing was probably worse.

Gerrard - 7 Stuck to the left a lot more and was involved in most of our best passages of play.

Defoe - 8 Just for that goal and doing what a striker should do.

Rooney - 5 Poor touches, wasted chance. Although he was decent in some patches, should have laid it off to Milner instead of being greedy.

Subs:

Joe Cole - 6 Not exactly a threat but England had stopped looking to attack by the time he came on.

Heskey - 5 Came on to help defensively and hold the ball up and did just that.

it was beautiful - like a fish!

...2nd may be a blessing in disguise. besides, i'm sure a lot of people had us to finish last...

great result, and i actually enjoyed the game.

Upson... ive nere really paid much attention to him... but tonight, he first touched everything.. scared??,

He gave the ball away horribly once very early in the game just outside our box (shat meself!) and a better team might have punished us but after that he had a very good game and nearly got on the scoresheet aswell.

Its going to be Germany in the last 16, it is just meant to be....

As i've said before on paper we shouldn't fear the Germans at all, after all most of the England players will have regularly played and beaten the German starting 11 in the Champions League, apart from Bayerns freak run this year, but as a team, we are still quite a way from our potential whereas the Germans have looked far more together and cohesive (as always) despite their defeat to the Serbs.

By not going for the big win which was easily their for the taking (Slovenia were there for a pasting, especially first half) and looking past the last 16 which will be a 50-50 who goes through, we are then looking at a game against Argentina potentially if luck is on our side and we make it that far.

Whereas if we'd gotten the second goal we would be looking at a game against Ghana (England has never lost to an African team) and then the winner of Uruguay vs South Korea with the favourites being Uruguay. So due to that lack of courage to push forward and get another we are now facing Germany and Argentina instead of Ghana and Uruguay....i know which one id have opted for if i was manager.

Still at least we are through, C'MON ENGLAND! :appl::chant::scarf::trumpet::lei1:

Christ, what an over reaction. (Pundits on on TV and Radio mainly)

Another piss poor performance against a very limited and unambitious Slovenia. Without ever playing very well we should have scored 2 or 3 but dire finishing left us hanging on, just.

An awful lot of our players really did not look good, against a better side they really were not good enough.

James was decent and solid.

Johnson blew hot and cool as usual.

Terry looked uncomfortable on the right and Upson was not that comfortable either, until 'that' tackle.

Cashley was excellent, still a nasty little shit though.

Milner did nothing before the cross but was much better thereafter.

Lampard and Barry were both poor, Lampard much as usual, Barry still a long way from his best.

Gerrard worked hard and was heavily involved but with all his misplaced passes he remains a liabilty.

Rooney still miles off his best and as usual, Defoe did absolutely nothing bar score one and almost score another. Go figure.

Furthermore our failure to score more goals gave away a relatively easy route to the semi's for a more interesting route, taking in (in all probability) Germany, Argentina and Spain.

We might have won but at the end of the day it was yet another ****up!

Potentially Germany followed by Argentina? Tasty.

Exactly. :(

Whilst USA potentially got Serbia/Ghana followed by either South Korea or Uruguay.

Massive advantage for the Americans.

a cocktail of sorts of adrenaline and Budweiser will mean that my post will be devoid of any strategical and tacitcal analysis.

1) The better team won the USA-Algeria match.

2) Big-time players show up in big-time moments. Landon Donovan is a big-time bad mutha****a and y'all need to recognize.

3) I never had any doubt that England would win. I was shocked to find that they'd only scored 1... tbh I was more impressed with Algeria in the first two games than Slovenia (besides finishing) even though les Fennecs only took one point. Only a Medjani fvck-up cost them a well-deserved point, and what a difference M'Bolhi made 'twixt the sticks.

4) In the 91st minute, I was on my knees with my head on the ground, thinking that this was a most unfortunate WC for the rugged U.S. team that played quite well, but possibly a quite lucrative WC for U.S. and M'gladbach midfielder Michael Bradley, who absolutely bossed it in the midfield. Again.

Another example of justice in football, U.S. winning the group when they could've sealed a win against the Slavs earlier in the tournament if it hadn't been for poor officiating.

Cheers. We had a perfectly good Dempsey goal disallowed today, too, but I can't complain too much as I thought it was offside while watching live. Replays proved both myself and the linesman wrong. Tsk, tsk.

To be fair, there were poor decisions today that went both ways, and DeMerit (who was a BEAST) got away with a bear-hug in the box, but how there wasn't a red card + penalty when Dempsey got punched in the face (Belhadj IIRC) in the 81st or thereabouts is beyond me.

I cant believe it, as I said never write the yanks off the strength of mind is fantastic.

Not necessarily--there are several solid sides in that group. But in the 91st minute, if anyone had told me the U.S. could get out of the group stage on the condition that they'd have to play 1970 Brazil on speed, I'd have said, "Yes," before s/he could finish that question.

Fosse Fox, I can see my cheap joke went right over your head :crylaugh: Your boy, marabelladave, got it! But, to be fair, I was a media studies student, indeed. So, you're 1-for-2, which albeit, a small sample size, is still a solid performance... for a baseball player. BTW I love commas (and Landon Donovan).

One thing I would like to point out is that Spain are far from certain to win their group. If they don't, that would mean a tie between Chile and Portugal in Round 2, who would go on to meet the winners of the clash between Group F's winner (almost certainly Paraguay) and the Group E runners-up (Denmark or Japan). If we can get through the last 16, defeat Argentina in the quarters (who crumbled in similar circumstances in 2006) then we would actually have the softer of the possible semi-finals. So finishing second in the group could well be a blessing in disguise.

There's no guarantee it'll be Germany next and even if it is we are capable of beating them.

Absolutely no guarantee of Germany getting through at all.

A win for Serbia and a draw between Germany and Ghana would knock Germany out of the competition and set us up for a meeting with Serbia.
