Germany vs England, Sun 27th June, Manguang / Bloemfontein

I imagine he'll start Crouch on Sunday to go up against Mertesacker.

The way we play, occasionally lumping the ball up, Heskey, Defoe or Rooney won't win anything against Mertesacker.

Depending on Rooney's fitness, I think it could be Crouch and Defoe starting on Sunday.

BBC lied to me this morning!

"The good news is they are unbeaten on all four occasions they have worn that kit before. In 1962 they beat Peru 4-0 in a friendly and drew 0-0 with Bulgaria at the World Cup finals in Chile. It also brought a 4-2 friendly win over Czechoslovakia in 1963 and a 3-1 friendly win against Belgium in 1970."

Well I got that from the beeb myself - it was on the live text during the build up as a correction!

I'm worried that Ozil is going to have the freedom of the park based on Lampards and Barry's form.

I think to stand any chance we are going to have to play 5 across the middle and 1 up front (Turning into 4-3-3 when we attack)

James

Johnson

Terry

Upson

A.Cole

Lennon

Milner

Barry

Gerrard

J.Cole

Rooney/Defoe

Milner and Barry in the middle will cover a lot of ground between them allowing Gerrard to just free roam and try and do what he does best without either being inhibited by Lampard or by playing on the left. Rooney upfront because apparently he plays better on his own but i wouldn't be bothered if Defoe was there instead. We'll have pace and trickery on the wings allowing us to effectively counter attack.

Its a shame we'll probably end up seeing.

James.

Johnson

Carragher

Terry

A.Cole

Milner

Lampard

Barry

Gerrard

Rooney

Defoe

I personally feel that line up will get torn apart.

If the Germans get it right, they'll rip us to shreds... however, if they play like they did against Serbia and partly tonight, we have a very good chance!

Hey, one thing to be positive about is that despite our ability to score, we have been creating chances. There were certainly a fair few in the USA game and today, and although the Algeria game was poor and pants, there were also chances in that game.

The taking of chances can soon turn, and it may end up that we can't stop scoring or am I thinking what I want to think here? We've also been secure at the back considering only R.Green has scored against us!

Edit: Ok, securish we have been lucky on a few occasions

The Germans have been pretty poor in their last couple of games to be fair, Ghana really had the chances to smash them today but scoring goals has been a big problem for them all tournament.

We truly have the quality to defeat Germany in 90 minutes but in games as big as this one, its a lottery....

IF Germany can recreate the form in parts of this match and Australia, they will rip England to peices, if they play like they did against Serbia England could nick it.

I don't think you giving enough consideration to how poor Australia were in that match. We were poor against Algeria but not that poor.

I genuinely don't care if we go out in quarter finals, please do not lose to the Germans.

If we get through on Sunday, and call me crazy, I would actually fancy our chances against Argentina.

They did exactly the same in their group in 2006, dominating it and tearing teams to shreds but it was clear by the knock-out stages that they had peaked too early and made a limp quarter-final exit. We should also take into account the inexperience of Maradona as a manager, in a tactical battle with Capello I can see only one winner. If Greece can frustrate them for long periods, England can do the same and probably nick a goal in the process. It's just that historically Germany are a massive, ridiculous hurdle. The last time they failed to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup was 1938 so they know how to win, even when their team isn't necessarily great. I really do hope this is the year they fail again but it's hope rather than expectation because with Germany, even if they're outplayed, Lady Luck always seems to suck them off.

Anyone else still kicking themselves over the fact that we didn't finish top. If only we took one, just one, of our many chances we would have leapfrogged USA and finished top, and have gotten an easier passage.

Massivw opportunity missed me thinks. :/

But anyway, quite honestly I think we're going to beat these bastards. On penalties would be quite incredible. They've obviously got players with bags of quality, but at the end of the day so have we.

That's the spirit we all need at this time! :D

Ah, I read the first one on the live text (during the build up) but not the correction!

Don't really see the appeal of scraping past Ghana 1-0 with the ball bobbling in off Heskey's meaty thigh or some bollocks, if we're then just going to get dicked on by the first decent team we play a couple of rounds later.

We either start playing like a team that could conceivably win the world cup or we might as well fvck off home now anyway.

Personally looking forward to the weekend so much more than I would be if we'd finished top.

Once again I an beginning to come round to this way of thinking.

A week ago after England's awful start, I suggested that a win against the old enemy (and the confidence it would bring) was the only way we could get going and do well in the Tournament, but I also warned 'that you should be careful what you wish for'.

I stand by the comments and now I am really looking forward to sunday, Have to re-organise the weekend, much to Mrs M's disgust, but this is unmissable!

Agreed, and I think the players will be far more pumped for this compared to a match-up with Ghana.
