Manchester City's Craig Bellamy has opted to join home-town club Cardiff City, skysports.com understands.

A host of clubs had been tracking the 31-year-old, who has already been told by City boss Roberto Mancini that he does not figure in his plans for this season.

Celtic and Tottenham had been leading the chase, whilst the likes of Fulham, Everton and Bolton had also been linked.

However, Bellamy has now opted for a loan spell back in his native Wales and is to join Cardiff City.

The news will be a huge boost to Dave Jones and represents a massive transfer coup for the Bluebirds.

Bellamy's bottled it.

Don't think that's the phrase I'd use.

The cynic in me thinks it's probably money related, however. I mean this way presumably he's going to be getting the same amount of money with Cardiff paying an Nth and City chipping in the rest.

It's unlikely Celtic or Fulham were going to turf out whatever he's on now.

Odds on him getting crocked after three or four games?

At least now there's less chance of his club interfering with him playing internationals. <_<

But they surely could have offered much more for his wages (unless Cardiff's new ownership can afford it?). From Bellamy's perspective he's a striker with clear ability to continue playing at the top level but instead he's chosen to make a significant step down for no apparent reason. Doesn't make sense.

Seems only fair we should sign Heskey now. Please.

I'm willing to give odds of 1/7 that dandanneildanok will break his keyboard in a furious rage while typing a response to that post :D

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say. If he's on, purely for example, fifty grand a week now he's still going to be on fifty grand a week at Cardiff. It makes no difference to the player where his paychecks are coming from as long as he's getting them - it's a loan move, not a transfer so Cardiff are only going to be chipping in a percentage.

Then if he goes to Tottenham or Fulham he's obviously not going to be on the same fifty grand a week (again, purely imaginary number) because Man City aren't going to loan him out to a competing club, they're going to want to transfer him, and neither of those teams are going to budget for the sort of wages he's on at Eastlands.

It's all about money and Man City have it all, they can basically dictate his future for him. I don't really see what's "bottling" about any of this. You could probably call him a mercenary but then even that'd be slightly unfair without knowing what's going on behind the scenes at City.

They paid good money for him and he's obviously a quality player - they're not going to want to piss it away in some rush bargain just to ship him off the books, they'll probably happily let him sit and rot away on the wage bill.

Be more interesting to see what happens in January when the dust has settled. I've not read anything saying it's a season long loan unless I'm being thick.

Yeah, I know all of the wages ins and outs. It was more from City's perspective why they'd (probably) accept a much lower figure of wage percentage from Cardiff than, say, Celtic. Moneybags or not, they're still businessmen.

I don't have a problem with Craig Bellamy leaving Manchester City - he had to at the end of the day. I just don't understand why he'd drop down so significantly when he's still got a lot to offer in the Premier League. I'd be surprised if Man City wouldn't have allowed him to go to Fulham, they're hardly top six material, and as for Celtic I'm sure they were busting a gut to get him too.

Just seems a waste to me.

Bellamy's "done" Celtic, why go back?

As much as there might be some stigma surrounding the Championship because it's a "second" division and the SPL is the top draw, the quality of football's far better in the Championship, he'll play probably in front of more fans every week (I appreciate Celtic Park - but then look at Killy and Motherwell and co') and he won't disappear off the radar.

On top of that he'll be at his hometown club, where his wife and children live, at a time when he's the national captain.

I'd, personally, go to Cardiff over Celtic in his position. I'd argue it'd be the "right" thing to do as well.

£50,000 a week :giggle:

Try £95,000

Purely the first number that sprang to mind.

Flair enough, I wasn't affair his wife and kids lived there right now actually. We'll see how it pans out for him anyway. Obviously if he's fit he'll tear this division apart with a good side around him. You can just see something on the horizon with this though, an injury perhaps or a full-blown row with Chopra or something. It's an interesting move, but quite how it'll pan out for him I'm still not sure....

Agree with this. Bellamy hasn't been the luckiest with injuries and you just know every centre-half will be all over him like a rash and/or kicking him. There's also little doubt that Bellamy and Chopra are, to put it politely, strong willed characters. I'd pay good money to see Bellamy twat Chopra with a golf club though.

Cardiff are up then!!

Bothroyd

Whittingham

Chopra

Bellamy

incredible attacking force.

Only thing is that can go horribly wrong. Two big egos in the dressing room with Bellamy and Chopra as has already been alluded to, and Whittingham looking fairly likely to leave.

Yeh but the fact of the matter is, all 4 are on their books at the moment and available to play despite your worry over ego's and probability of Whittingham going

Clearly the runt is making a crusade against something.

Good player, far too chopsy for most managers, as has been proved.

Not too sure how this will pan out, but it won't be in a positive sense..
