dannythefox Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Cracking match. Bout time we smashed someone.
Ricey Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Reckon I clocked Sasho Tunchev at Leicester station too. Aye, I did too. He looked right miserable though.
Wymsey Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Still not sure on Cunningham. He seemed sloppy today
The Doctor Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Very poor in the first half and were lucky not to be a goal or maybe 2 down. Dubious penalty for us was clearly the turning point. Second half we were excellent. Not a bad player among us. Wellens today was amazing. My man of the match closely followed by Naughton. Great result and can't remember the last time we scored 5 in a game. Just hope this can spurs us on now and keep the momentum going. Oh and to those people that left early before the end...bet you wish you hadn't now! februrary at home to s****horpe?
accessory Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 The whole defence looked sloppy at times today. Donny could and maybe should have wrapped up the game in the first 20 minutes. But an inspirational substitution by Sven, bringing on Dyer when he could have just as easily used Waghorn or Fryatt, turned the game. The Donny defence was troubled by players running at them all afternoon and we were able to make our quality tell once Wellens put us ahead. It was especially pleasing to see Vassell finally break his duck for us, and Waggy end his barren run. The penalty looked a harsh decision from the Kop, but before we offer too many sympathies to our visitors, remember the jaw-smashing challenge by Stock on Fryatt in the same area last season which WASN'T given. Sometimes what goes around comes around. Maybe, just maybe, this may be the result that kickstarts our season. If we can take the form from the second half to Portman Road, we can post back-to-back wins which will build some momentum for the crucial holiday period.
broughtonblue Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 How I've pleaded for the return of Dyer and for us to pass and move at pace and today was an example of why. Suddenly we had people asking serious questions of defenders and pulling Doncaster's defence apart with their movement, their give and goes, and their ability to twist and . The comfort zone that defenders so love with everything coming onto them or hoisted into the air was gone and City simply tore them to shreds. The presence of elusive players like Dyer and Vassell helped make so much space for others - including Naughton. And how City exploited it to the point where Doncaster visually lost heart. How long is it since a City team was able to toy with the opposition and to find enough time on the ball to autograph it had they so wished? At one stage it seemed like we had 12 or 13 men on the field to their nine or 10 cos we had so many options and so many players looking to penetrate. Our teamwork today was outstanding in the second half though quite Dyer earned that penalty just before half-time I'm still not sure. I thought there was a stronger shout earlier when the referee seemed to allow advantage for an initial foul only for a second foul to upend Vassell (I think it was) just inside the box. In the end we got a free kick outside the box which was wasted. Whatever, Doncaster's complaints seemed feeble after the humiliation of the second half cos they were ripped apart by some splendid moves and equally impressive goals. It was my kind of football and it was a joy to watch. The game could have finished 8-3 and those three potential goals should give Sven serious cause for concern cos some of the loose play and poor marking/shadowing was appalling. But as a fan I'll not remember that. I'll remember the return to flowing football, the proper use of width, the sight of people making selfless runs and clever passes being threaded between defenders. Altogether the sort of football that could, eventually, bring us success. And all in front of 27,000 fans some of whom might surely be inspired to come again. Cos it was the perfect advertisment for a fans day. Loved it. Exactly, thought the first half was the worst I've seen in a long time, worried how they seemed to be able to create chances at will, on the flip side the second half was fantastic. Wish cunninghams shot had gone in instead of hitting the bar, poss being a bit greasy though!
themotivator Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Still not sure on Cunningham. He seemed sloppy today yer yer, but did you not see him twat the crossbar?
spirefox Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Caught interview with Donny manager on Radio Sheffield on way home tonight .He was massively critical of their second half display ,saying most of them gave up when we scored our 2nd goal.Wasn't raving about the pen ,although obviously didn't think is was one and said that the management team had spent half time trying to get them calmed down before second half but had failed.
Father Ted Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Lloyd dyer= a little bit of shit in the defenders pants. I'd say more than a little bit of shit!

Bert Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 I like Sean O'Driscoll. Honest as the day is long and not a cunt of a manager, plays decent football too.

Salieri Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 There were two major turning points in the match. Firstly, there was the Doncaster miss from an open goal at 1-0 after Davies' awful backpass. Secondly, the withdrawal of Bednar. Whilst he was on the pitch we only really had two chances - and they came from the only two times we got the ball down and passed it. When Bednar went off, we stopped playing hoofball (Bednar wins no headers) and Gallagher stopped his hollywood crossfields passes to two foot tall Vassell Make it three major turning points, the dodgy pen helped us on our way. How I've pleaded for the return of Dyer and for us to pass and move at pace and today was an example of why. Suddenly we had people asking serious questions of defenders and pulling Doncaster's defence apart with their movement, their give and goes, and their ability to twist and turn people. The comfort zone that defenders so love with everything coming onto them or hoisted into the air was gone and City simply tore them to shreds. I'm all for your idealogy of how football should be played etc but in reality it ain't gonne happen every week so when it doesn't, try not to despair too much.
Baby Elvis Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Naughton was FANTASTIC TODAY! End of! Bedner was awful apart from that the team on the whole were very good!
STUHILL Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 First half was one of our worst ever displays I have seen since Levein era!! No joke. Shocking defending let in yet another soft goal and after that, our confidence was shot and for the next 20mins or so we were so poor it was untrue. I do wonder what would have happened if they had of made it 2-0 with that open goal. However, we got a lifeline with the penalty and although completely undeserved, I will take that any day of the week. Second half, we were a different team, and as the game went on you could see the confidence returning to a point where it was oozing out of each player and we were truly terrifying in attack! It was a great to watch and the second half seemed a distant memory. Overall, you can't be unhappy with a 5-1 thrashing but the first half performance was worrying and shows how bad we can be but equally the second half shows we can look a top Championship side with confidence. Sven has some work to do with our back four and if we can stay switched on for 90mins and cut out soft goals, we will be in the play-offs.

They had 2 shots in total including their goal...
FoxyPV Posted 11 December 2010 Posted 11 December 2010 Our defence just disappeared for their goal although it was extremely well taken. Just saw the penalty decision - the ref had a fooking 'mare on that one. Wellens' goal and assist were lovely.
Kitchandro Posted 12 December 2010 Posted 12 December 2010 Great game today. The defence was disorganised and showed a lack of experience all game. Cunningham and Naughton showed a lot of naivety, Naughton was trying to do too much in his own half and Cunningham neglected the side of the pitch he was supposed to be covering, once being punished with the goal. The marking from the centre backs wasn't great either - but you've got to credit the finish from their bloke. None of the front 3 could get into the game for the first half hour. Bednar was very poor, everything he touched bounced off him and he didn't win any headers. I'm not going to write him off this early but he's shown nothing so far that Howard can't do better (OK maybe mobility, but it's only slightly better and isn't really making much difference). As soon as he came off we were a different team. We passed the ball along the floor and with much more confidence. Dyer was far better than Vassell on the wing, and Vassell was in turn much more dangerous as a centre forward (which I think we all knew). We have had some shocking decisions against us this season (and in fact last season, and the season we got relegated. And no, they haven't evened themselves out). We have had a bunch of goals wrongly disallowed and we've had stone wall penalties turned down. However today we got a huge slice of luck. It was never a penalty. But I think we're due a lucky break. And frankly, we had the majority of possession as usual, even though we weren't using it well. I'm not too sure about Gallagher's penalties, he doesn't really hit the bottom corner but he hits them with conviction. Anyway, it went in, that's all that matters. I think Birch some it up nicely when he said 'Not Jim Davidson the comedian, although we had a few out there in the first half'. But one of them wasn't Ritchie Wellens. He was definitely my MOTM, he ran the show and when we looked short on ideas and confidence he still played with some urgency and tried to get attacks going. His goal was a screamer and he was involved in most of the others. I really can't understand why he gets so much stick. Abe also showed some fight and he had a good defensive performance. Naughton and Cunningham showed the opposite side of themselves in the second half, they contributed brilliantly in an attacking sense, Cunningham had a great shot off the bar and got in some great crosses, and Naughton took his goal well and his celebration was even better Also nice to see Waggy get on the scoresheet, I hope it gives him a confidence boost. What he really needs to do is take his chance when he's brought on and we need a goal. It's strange that we scored 5 and for once we aren't talking about the great finishing of King, but I bet he'll never miss a chance like that again Still a good all round performance from him. I think we definitely have to start the team that came out for the second half. The front 3 not only worked with each other, but linked up with the rest of the side as well. It was great to some nice passing football with a cutting edge to go with it. I'm still not convinced by the defence, even in the second half their strikers had too much space. TBH I think Hobbs was a bit harshly dropped. During the game I was actually a bit concerned about complacency, we were showboating at 3-1
