Seeing as Matty Fryatt has gone and vacated the number 12 shirt, I started thinking. I remembered seeing in the programme in a match against Portsmouth that their squad number 12 was reserved for the fans. I was just wondering what you guys and gals thought about this and whether you would like to see Leicester do something similar.

It is not an original idea, and according to Wiki there are about 20 teams that have done it, from Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors to Shamrock Rovers.

The 12th man

In England it mentions Pompey, Grimsby, Stockport and Plymouth.

So do you think it's a good idea? Would it encourage you to get the number 12 on your shirt? Or do you think it is a bit stupid?

Personally I would love to see the match day programme read:

10 Andy King

11 Lloyd Dyer

12 The Blue Army*

* I assume we would use the blue army, any other suggestions?

Whilst it's kinda pointless

It is a good idea for fans who get shirts printed and perhaps don't like the player who occupys their fave number or doesn't want to get 00 - <NAME> printed just in case he's sold or loses form or whatever

So yeah good idea

I don't need to be told I am the 12th man, we are the ones who should be telling the club!

Sounds a bit ridiculous and pointless to me.

What if a player really loved the number 12 and couldn't have it? If I was told I couldn't wear 24 because the crowd are all wearing it I'd be abit disappointed. Also I'd think I was playing for the Insane Asylum 11 (or 12 if you like)

But really, it sounds like the clubs that do it are making a feeble attempt to have a relationship with the fans. If they want to make fans feel appreciated - reduce the ticket prices, let us stand, and in our case, swap the family stand with the Kop.

Er, I think that would make you considerably more immature.

I'd rather see us working on improving the stadium atmosphere in terms of chanting before attempting to emulate other club's marketing recipes.

I honestly don't give a fvck. If a bit of whimsy really ruins your day then you've got bigger issues than football.

Given there's no indication from the club this is happening, it's even less worth being bothered by.

I find the idea a bit of an artificial and cheesy way of a club trying to show that it appreciates the fans, when in LCFC's case they do all they can to undermine vocal support.

The sad thing is, it's exactly the kind of thing the club would do.

I'm surprised by the negative response, I don't think Portsmouth did it as a marketing gimmick, I think it was a genuine show of affection to their fans by the club.

I know that the relationship with the fans and the club is not the best at the moment, something like this would be a simple gesture by the club to recognise the fans, it may help build relationships and start a bit more dialogue between the supporters and the club. If they were to recgonise that the fans can be the 12th man, then they may be more open to helping with some of the other problems, such as standing areas, and some of the others mentioned.

With the new owners in charge and the team looking like it's playing well again, it may be a good time to start discussions, something like swapping the family with the kop would need a bit of time to do so start now with an aim to have it in place by next season.

The idea of wearing a 12 on your shirt was me just wondering if anyone would.

I think they have a huge banner saying "The Twelfth Man" at the Holte End at Villa Park too.

I'm not keen really. I think sports coverage and analysis is already jam packed with enough cliches to last for the time being. Can't say it would particularly bother me if the club did something like that though. I think sometimes you just have to appreciate that you aren't part of the demographic being targeted.

If our support at home was the 12th man then we could be a bad name in the squad considering the Stadium is half as noisy as my Halls of Residence lol
