FanofFilbert Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Interesting call on Foxes radio from a caller saying they felt very uncomfortable with: quote " Hundreds of Leicester fans chanting homophobic abuse" in the away end at shef untd. Just wondering what anyone's opinions are on this as it raised the point that the majority of fans wouldn't accept racist abuse but homophobic seems to be more acceptable.

To be honest I've never really heard any homophobic chants at football. I wonder what these chants were. Personally I wouldn't join in with such chants but wouldn't feel uncomfortable with them or complain.
HankMarvin Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 West Ham have been getting away with it for years "come on you Irons"

'We can see you holding hands' etc. He gave plenty back, all harmless and literally a non issue imo.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 FanofFilbert - good question and it deserves some debate me thinks. On the one hand i dont think some good hearted banter should be discouraged but obviously theres a line you shouldnt cross, the difficulty is different peoples perception of where that line is. Racist abuse is IMO awful and obviously should not be tolerated in any way shape or form, especially in a multi-cultural City like Leicester. Therefore i think by definition homophobic abuse should not be tolerated either in principle but i suppose it depends on what is being chanted and at whom as i stated above perhaps a bit of light hearted banter between fans or suchlike which is not meant in a nasty way or directed at anyone who would be directly affected by it perhaps could be tolerated? dont know just a thought?
Wymsey Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Heard a few name calling towards Savage when we beat them at our place

Yeah it wasn't really homophobic, he was wearing a bright pink hoodie and was properly playing up to our end, mooning and dancing. Seemed just like banter and no mention of being gay that I heard

Thoughtful answer jjstowell and i agree, inoffensive banter like it sounds like it was is to a degree fine but obviously anything more than this would not be welcome
FanofFilbert Posted 2 February 2011 Author Posted 2 February 2011 I wasnt at the game but thought the caller raised a good point, a suppose ones mans banter is anothers abuse.
North-LondonFox Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 There were chants of Elton's rent boys away at Watford - it sounds awful but I just thought of it as banter - I feel pretty ignorant thinking about it now.
Marmite Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Oh dear....another bit of banter that gets blown out of proportion
Haydos Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Oh dear....another bit of banter that gets blown out of proportion If you're going to pick out this then you can pick out anything really. Shall we stop shouting 'you fat bastard' at opposition keepers and officials because it might hurt their feelings? There was no malice in it and I seriously doubt any gay people would take offence. Snore.

Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 'whos the bender in the pink' only homophobic thing i can think of what was said but surely that cant affend anyone?
Bugg Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 'whos the bender in the pink' only homophobic thing i can think of what was said but surely that cant affend anyone? Gay people?
FanofFilbert Posted 2 February 2011 Author Posted 2 February 2011 Caller may have over egged it, sounds like banter. Dangerous thing it would seem these days (ie andy gray and keyes)
Guest Bilo Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 If you can't take banter you're either a woman or a poof.
Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Gay people? must be very sensative then, i wouldnt get affended by whos the straight guy in the blue
AmyLGK Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Moving aside from the callers remarks and the chants (which to me sound harmless enough) what do you think of footballers being openly gay? It seems football is the only profession where you can't be openly gay and where such abuse of a persons human rights is still tolerated! I just find it rather sad - but have never discussed this with male football fans so would like to hear your thoughts.
nothin2seehere Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Just don't rise to it. See what I did there? You see, I... never mind.
Alexikokopops Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 must be very sensative then, i wouldnt get affended by whos the straight guy in the blue This is sensationally retarded
FuriousFox46 Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 'whos the bender in the pink' only homophobic thing i can think of what was said but surely that cant affend anyone? If it's homophobic, it's gonna offend gay people. must be very sensative then, i wouldnt get affended by whos the straight guy in the blue Straight guy. Bender. Yep that's the same thing Homophobia in football should be dealt with but I seriously don't think in this instance it's even homophobic.
Corky Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 must be very sensative then, i wouldnt get affended by whos the straight guy in the blue Very much used in football stadia these days, that chant is.
1964FOX Posted 2 February 2011 Posted 2 February 2011 Interesting debate, there is obviously a fine line between banter and abuse. 'who's the bender in the pink' could be seen as either just a generic chant at some guy who was acting up and obviously thoroughly revelling in the attention form the away section - that's banter. But it could be seen that the crowd were trying to insult or show him up and by refering to him as a bender used it as a negative term therefore making it homophobic abuse which is a criminal offence. As with most things it depands on the situation and the way it is percieved, one thing is clear in this day and age genuine homophobia is totally unacceptable. One last thing with an away following of at least 1700 las night it is an absolute certainty there were a fair few homosexuals in our crowd, I would like to know how they feel about it but the truth would probably be some would not mind and others would find it offensive just like us hetro's.
