Guest BlueBrett Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Really, it no coincidence that he scores on his first game back in the team after Cunningham's injury, the game after that he flicks one on for Bamba's tap-in and at all times he's either on the end of them or taking markers away from whoever else gets on the end of them. Yeh fair enough. I realised soon as I posted that I had forgotten about his goal the other week. There is no denying that Bruno is reasonable in the air but equally there is no denying that we didn't score from 200 and whatever it was corners and Berner started most of those games so I'm not sure he can be described as a huge threat. Don't get me wrong I like Berner. He has many admirable qualities and his ability on the ball is often underestimated in my opinion. I'm just so excited by the prospect of Van Aanholt on one side with Naughton on the other and all the attacking thrust and pace that entails that to me the Berner/van Aanholt question is really a no brainer.
CKB Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Well it's only one game??? lets see how he fares after 3/4.. Another pointless iffy debut should be dropped thread
Captain... Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Well it's only one game??? lets see how he fares after 3/4.. Another pointless iffy debut should be dropped thread It's not though is it, it's comparing the 2 options we have at left back, discussing their merits and how they can both effectively serve the team, rather than saying PVA is number 1 left back in all circumstances and will play all games from now on. Or Bruno is da best and should play all games. They both bring something different, youth, speed and attacking threat vs stability, experience and defensive know how.
hackneyfox Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 It's comparing 2 options when we basically know nothing about one of them.
tomtom Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Problem is, many people on here think that picking their 'best' players makes the best team and forget that you need a range of skills and blend them altogether. saying that we've got 2 home games coming up which will ideal for the lad to show us what we can do when we'll almost certainly see a lot more of the ball Very true, the other problem on here is people thinking they know more than Sven!
Houdini Logic Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Friend at work who is a Chelsea season ticket holder says he's going to be the next big thing - was a little suprised he was allowed to be loaned to us
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 The guy has played 1 fooking game and there is a thread like this?
fosseman Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Is he? I prefer to see Denis Rofe at left back. Quality.
themotivator Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 i echo your comment houdini. he is clearly a massive prospect. rated highly by many who have seen him play. he has bags of ability, it would be a shame if he didn't fulfil any of his potential while he is here. having such a threat from our two fullbacks could make the difference for us this season in my opinion. hope they get the chance to shine.
STEVIE B Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 I'm a big fan of BERNER,but he has no pace. The 2nd half V Millwall he struggled and they targeted him. This then puts MEE under pressure to cover, which leaves gaps in central defence. We kept a clean sheet on Tues-for a change-so why alter things ?
blueredswed Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 The problems with fans is wich one shall we prefer! I will prefer Sven to choice the team
Fox1651 Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 For home games especially, Van Aanholt needs to start at home. Him and Naughton are great at home because we are much more attacking. With those two down the wings, and Dyer especially on one of them, we have more of an attacking threat. Hopefully all the attacking pays off, and by middle point in second half, we can bring Berner on in second half. Again very good post by StanSP - i agree spot on
Thracian Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 If we'd judged Berner after one game he'd never have impressed anyone. PVA did one thing for me that Berner rarely - and that was getting tight. He was forever getting a foot in early and while he did next to nothing on the ball PVA didn't get skinned very often either. We need speed at full-back and in our defence generally. Berner's got his qualities but speed and the ability to mark tightly aren't among em. It's still a silly question after one game.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 disagree with those who think this is a pointless thread, it generates debate about the club we love and thoughtful comments about how the fans see team selection panning out etc, for me i agree with StanSP's input from earlier in that i think PVA will add speed and mobility for home games where hopefully we can blow teams away most weeks at this level but BERNER is a very good deputy when injuries or tiredness effect PVA

ramadaone Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 The one thing he PVA did the other night was to try and get the ball off Weale and play it out rather than let Weale just lump it aimlessly forward. Unfortunately not everyone was on the same wave length which is hardly suprising considering it was PVA's first game and only Mee's 2nd game. What didn't help was that he was trying to play in the wrong areas on a horrible bobbling pitch and got caught out a couple of times early doors and I think it knocked his confidence a bit. I'm not Berners biggest fan but on Tuesday he may well have been a better bet so agree with the horses for courses argument. On Saturday on a perfect playing surface where we will need our full backs to push on I think you'll see a totally different PVA to the one we saw on Tuesday night. On a wet and windy night at some northern dump on a boggy pitch it might well be a different story.
bluebatt Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 the two new guys mee and van aardholt are good players and give us a bit extra but doesn't anybody think it's a kick in the teeth for bruno and hobbsy played well for games before they are bought in then bang dropped , sorry but i'd say what the hell is going on, or is it just me sorry
Captain... Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 the two new guys mee and van aardholt are good players and give us a bit extra but doesn't anybody think it's a kick in the teeth for bruno and hobbsy played well for games before they are bought in then bang dropped , sorry but i'd say what the hell is going on, or is it just me sorry Be careful with that kind of talk you'll get accused of knowing better than Sven They can't be suprised Sven has been trying to replace them since he arrived, the thing is I don't think we stand a chance in hell of signing PVA on a permanent deal, which is what makes it worse. Cunningham I think we had a good chance of signing before he broke his leg (anyone got any news on that?). All we are doing at the moment is improving a player for our champions league rivals next season. I think it is more of a kick in the teeth that despite being under a lot of pressure at the back and PVA not having a great game was that Berner wasn't brought on as a sub, but if Sven thinks that a teenager after 70 minutes of playing his first game for the club is better equipped to handle the pressure of Sheffield United's route one bombardment than a very experienced former international player who has fresh legs, then who are we to even in dare question it.
North-LondonFox Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 I think if we really want to kick on, we should go for broke and pick PVA - Bruno a good player but the youngun' has real potential. If we are going out to try and beat teams pick PVA if we are setting up not to get beat then its Bruno. Its easy to make a case for either and it says something about where we are now that both of them are pretty decent options!
StanSP Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 bruno. every time Maybe a year or so ago. I think that even he knows he won't have the energy/stamina/fitness to play every game of a season.
shailen Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Tbf bruno is no longer good enough. Good.professional and is decent backup compared to RB where we have neilson as backup if naughton gets injured
Captain... Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Tbf bruno is no longer good enough. Good.professional and is decent backup compared to RB where we have neilson as backup if naughton gets injured We've not exactly done badly since his return to the side, I don't think it's time to write him off yet.
thybluefox Posted 4 February 2011 Posted 4 February 2011 Bruno is good defensively, but lacks any kind of speed which means when he does get forward he then struggles to get back. He was repeatedly beaten against Millwall, which only helped to compound Mee's poor game. We all know Sven likes attacking fullbacks and quick players, have faith anyway, AVP is a quality player.
