B52 Posted 21 June 2011 Posted 21 June 2011 I wonder however, with some good coaching, whether Hobbs could be a good stopper AND become comfortable on the ball? Isnt that what coaching is about? He's only what? 23... Time to learn and improve yet surely. In Hobbs you have the basis of a strong, traditional centre back on which to build. The foundations are there surely? Is Sven wanting 'ready made' players? Or does he think Hobbs just ain't got it? The latter I presume... Sven, as a manager, has seen a lot of talant learn and improve. Certain kind of players might not get more comfortable on the ball. Why spend more time on mission impossible when it's loads of players out there comfortable on the ball. Get thoose players stronger instead.
21st Century Fox Posted 21 June 2011 Posted 21 June 2011 Now this I agree with... I wonder however, with some good coaching, whether Hobbs could be a good stopper AND become comfortable on the ball? I suspect its a case of he will want first team football and we don't have the time/patience for some on the job training while he's learning a new set of skills in our first team. Shame but its the nature of the game now. He just doesn't fit our team anymore. He'll do well for a manager like Pearson who can slot him straight in with the tactics he plays.

If it's because they all want to leave us for Hull or something else I don't know.

Luke Chadwick played for Man Utd
Chazwaz Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 If we sell Hobbs for the stated price that's supposedly the same as what we brought Peltier for, if you ask me that's some good dealing by Sven as I never rated Hobbs highly and although I do think he will be a good player, Peltier has more potential.

Agreed its good business but THANK YOU Hobbsy for your time at the club and good luck in the future apart from against City of course
danlcfc4ever Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 Jack Hobbs - sad to see him go really. Decent defender i thought. Cracking tackle on Tevez around 3:07 here. Sometimes, you've just gotta foul them.
Guest Col city fan Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 I don't want to go one about Hobbs but if people would rather their centre backs be good passers than good defenders then the priorities are wrong. Basics first, that's what Sousa failed to grasp. Exactly right....
MikeyT Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 Because he's signing Adebola and Hobbs. Both of which are gash.
Roy Cropper Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 Exactly right.... I'd expect them to do both as they basic requirements of a centre half. And if they can't do both then I'd rather they weren't at the club.

You stated that Hobbs is 'gash' earlier? This is a ridiculous assertion and I can't take your views seriously I'm afraid. Very few centre backs at championship level are both tough defenders and ball playing maestros.. Be realistic

Very few centre backs at championship level are both tough defenders and ball playing maestros.. Be realistic I am being realistic. If we want to go up playing Sven's style of football we need quality centre halfs that are strong, comfortable on the ball and can create opportunities, or at the very least keep possession, with their passing. I'm not asking for them to be able to ping 80 yard passes every time they get the ball but they need to do more than just hoof it forward,

Be realistic We didn't ask for a ball playing maestro, just that they be able to pass it to a team mate, which Hobbs, in general, was unable to do.
Corky Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 Ben Mee fits the bill for the type of defender we need.

Jack Hobbs may not be maradona but 'gash' he ain't.. Using such strong terms, especially when they are daft don't curry popularity on here. Try to give a more level comment

Guest Col city fan Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 Jesus mate, get off your high horse will you. Patronising ****. To be fair, the points you make about needing a centre back who can pass their way out of defence and build up play from the back are valid. However, blindly slagging off one of our current players, particularly one of our better players IMO is just unnecessary and cheap. You make some good points mate... Im not trying to patronise.. Just giving my opinion back. It's best for Hobbs to leave city cos he's not wanted it would seem. But he's solid defensively, was our player of the season not too long ago and has something to offer. This don't constitute 'gash'
hackneyfox Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 Just because the fans voted a player as POS doesn't mean that they are actually any good. You only have to look at the love affairs on here to see that.
JJS84 Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 I don't recall hull's defense becoming water tight as soon as he joined! But look he did a great job for those first two seasons, but he just didn't fit last season, and isn't likely to. He's not a bad player, just not a great player that is worth keeping. This season is promotion or bust for sven, he cant risk a chance like jack Hobbs. Also a equal or better replacement won't cost more than what we make on him.

No 'love affair' going on here...I just rate the lad..but am aware of the areas on which his game needs to improve.. 'Gash' is ridiculous... Or am I being obtuse?
danlcfc4ever Posted 22 June 2011 Posted 22 June 2011 Maybe he meant 'Gash' as a compliment? We all like abit of gash right? haha :sge:
