accessory Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 What a load of bollocks. You will not get anywhere in life if you just want to be teachers pet at every opportunity. Sometimes you need to stand up and make yourself noticed. Clearly Mr Hobbs did not do that. That either means he isn't good enough in Sven's opinion, or he couldn't be bothered. So why are we so bothered? I think Hobbs was used to being the first name (at least defender wise) on the team sheet and he didn't like having to prove himself again. The fact he has ran off to Pearson means he either wants NP to wipe his arse again or there was no other option. Some posters on this forum have the memory of fcuking goldfish.. Hobbs made himself noticed on many occasions during the previous two seasons. If he had wanted to have remained in his own comfort zone he could easily have stayed at Liverpool. Sven's opinion on who was good enough to wear a City shirt was found wanting too often last season . Remember Roman Bednar? Or Chris Kirkland? Or - of particular relevance here - Jeffrey "Bombscare" Bruma? Hobbs didn't figure in Sven's plans and took the only option available to him - much like Kasper Schmeichel did when he left Leeds to come to us.
Chazwaz Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 He is not a Sven's sort of player and even if he did stay I cant see Sven giving him any time so why not cash in now and spend the money elsewhere?
Webbo Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 Well I'm sorry he's going, solid, reliable, no nonsense defender. Practically giving him away for that money. I'm sure he'll go on to better things.
Stevosevic Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 People saying Hobbs is a better player than Bruma need to have a rethink.
ChippingFox Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 Sorry to see Hobbs go. He was nearly England U21s a season or two ago. Suffers without leadership though which isn't great for a centre back / spine of team etc... Although, why can't we just loan him to Hull for the season? If he develops, we get a better player back & poss more wonga..... Agree with others too - where is the replacement?

sphericalfox Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 There isn't going to be one, Sven will head into the new season with Bamba and Tunchev... It's obvious that St. Ledger is the replacement, and looks to sign this week, if the inevitable Hobbs to Hull deal has reached the press.
I am Rod Hull Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 Still think we should keep him. He`s still young and has is best days are in front of him..
ChippingFox Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 It's obvious that St. Ledger is the replacement, and looks to sign this week, if the inevitable Hobbs to Hull deal has reached the press. Not sure St Ledger is that good. A defender in a relegation side & Preston were truly awful (last 5 games aside). Sven must be able to think bigger than this. Curtis Davies was his best CB signing.......if he could have been bothered to stay!
accessory Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 People saying Hobbs is a better player than Bruma need to have a rethink. Bruma may go on to have a very successful career. But for us, he was the wrong player at the wrong time - too petulant and prone to errors.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 Has hobbs gone? Shame that is. A good player on the whole
Stevosevic Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 Bruma may go on to have a very successful career. But for us, he was the wrong player at the wrong time - too petulant and prone to errors. To be honest i think he was made a scapegoat in a poorly organised back 5, mainly because of the inexperience, uncertainty that Weale gave behind the back 4, the awful positioning by Van Aanholt and the inconsistency of having a regular partner (not something i am blaming Sven for) But he actually had some solid and impressive performances for us, Boro away however was very poor by him and cost us 2 points.

I've pointed out in the St. Ledger's thread why I think he's better than Hobbs. Blaming him for Preston's inevitable relegation is a bit naive. Preston went through a couple of manager's, had zero money to strengthen their team, and they scored very little. How you attribute their season to one player, who Preston fans consider their best player?

The same Weale who kept a stack of clean sheets in 09-10? Hobbs didn't do so badly in front of him either. But apart from Naughton (and Mee to a lesser extent) none of our defence ended last season in a blaze of glory.

But apart from Naughton (and Mee to a lesser extent) none of our defence ended last season in a blaze of glory. The stack of clean sheets was mainly due to the experience and organisation by Brown who was a leader at the back, and our rigid, organised style of play that restricted teams from playing football against us that of course limited the number of chances they had against us.

Richard Stearman and Gareth McAuley were both regulars in our 08 relegation line-up, yet both will be in the Premier League next season. St Ledger is a regular for Ireland under Trappatoni, so there's at least one international boss who rates him.

Hobbs didn't figure in Sven's plans and took the only option available to him - much like Kasper Schmeichel did when he left Leeds to come to us. My memory is perfectly fine. Hobbs was quality for us under Pearson. But as it stands he is not going to factor Sven's plans. For whatever reason Sven doesn't like him and Hobbs does not seem to be able to adapt his style of play and would rather play for Pearson. So again I ask, why are we bothered about him going? And to say he could have stayed in his comfort zone at Liverpool is a little bit much, he would have eventually been out of contract and then probably been on his way to Leage One anyway. It says a lot as well that Sven is seeing Tunchev's fitness before telling him to sod off or stay yet Hobbs is packing his bags and has been since Christmas. He had long enough to impress Sven but clearly wanted to follow Nigel Pearson. What have people been saying about wanting players who want to play for us? I am not ungrateful for the time Jack Hobbs spent here and who knows if Paulo Sousa hadn't destroyed his confidence then he may still be a LCFC player and a regular. But as it is, Sven doesn't like him and he doesn't want to be here. So good luck Jack and sorry things couldn't have been different edit: one other thing, Schemichel was in no uncertain terms told to go. I am sure Hobbs had time to prove he was worth keeping around. That is the difference I am talking about. Was Hobbs also one of the players that supposedly handed in a request when Pearson left?

That argument, such as it is, falls apart when examining Brown's record at Preston after he left us. Hobbs was the lynchpin of our defence under Pearson, as was recognised by his Player of the Season awards.
hackneyfox Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 Similar types of comments were made about how we were letting a 'player with potential who did well under NFP' go about Morrison, and look what happened to him.

Not really, it was clear that Preston had good CB's for this level with St. Ledger and Brown, but ineffective players in front of them. Similiar to us when we were relegated under Holloway.

Stevosevic Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 So why did Wayne Brown feature so little in Preston's side after his namesake arrived? I couldn't tell you, but I'm sure Brown in our defence last season, with 3 talented defenders along side him would have seen us keep more clean sheets and picked up more points than we did.
okie fox Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 So why did Wayne Brown feature so little in Preston's side after his namesake arrived? Wayme Brown was injured.
Ric Flair Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 So why did Wayne Brown feature so little in Preston's side after his namesake arrived? He also fell out with Big Phil when they were at Hull together.
sphericalfox Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 He also fell out with Big Phil when they were at Hull together. Did he not like his orange permatan?
