Interesting one by Sven he knows we need a striker, I still think their is another iron in the fire that we will get later on during the window, but at least Matt Derbyshire will provide us with competition

I must admit, I don't know Derbyshire's playing style intimately. But I was under the impression he would be one of the wide forwards, making the front three look like

Gallagher - Nugent - Derbyshire

Sounds like people think he's going to be central though. :dunno:

Where is he likely to play?

I thoguht his goal scoring record was better than it is, 31 in 130 games instead great.

However he's someone I've always rated and maybe the drop in division will be kind to him.

I don't think he's our 20+ a season striker though.

As said before though, he has spent his career as a substitute. So the vast majority of those appearances will be 45mins or less. If you rouhgly halve the total appearances then look at the goals to game ratio again, its not THAT bad

I still think Sven will have one last go at Maynard, I can see Derbyshire Being one of two Strikers.

Gally + Nugent on one side

Vassell + Dyer & occasionally Danns on the other

then we have Waggy, Howard and Derbyshire down the middle, I expect waggy to leave on loan now.

I read somewhere that he hasnt played for olympiakos all pre season if true he may be a bit behind everyone else. I think this signing signals the end for at least one of waghorn or howard. I cant see him playing down the middle as the main striker. I reckon he will start on the bench or be out wide of a front three. He may not be Maynard or Long but i think he is an improvement on what we already have.

39 starts, 65 sub appearances, 20 goals.

It should be remembered that 10 of those league goals were from 16 game loan spell in League 2 with Wrexham

It should read more like

23 starts (65 sub) 10 goals (this is his PL & Championship record)

Personally; I think this could be a good bit of business for the club & I still think we'll get another striker, but this buys us a bit more time.

To me if he does sign we have got two decent forwards at the club without any transfer fees.

Still fairly decent record then

Hi guys, just wanted to come by and wish Matt all the best at his new club.

I've been an Olympiacos supporter since the mid 80's and I loved Matt from day 1. We all loved him and he will be missed. Simply for his goals againt our rivals which helped us to secure league and cup titles, he will forever be remembered.

Good luck Matt, we hope you have a good season. Good luck to Leicester too.

We have many pages of discussion about him in English, plus many wallpapers and more. Come by, say hello and keep us updated on his season.

Sometimes it's not the quality of the striker, but how they fit into a system. Speedie, Claridge and to some extent Cottee all raised eye brows at the time of signing, but all did very well in the system we played. Derbyshire is certainly no worse than what we have and having played in the Premier League and Olympiakos, I would hope he would find life in NPower Championship somewhat easier.

On the fence. Sven says he wanted a proven goal-scorer - Derbyshire isn't that man. I do believe, however, that with a run of matches in his proper position (i.e. not on the wing where he was wasted at Blackburn) we might eventually see the best from him.

I still imagine we will get one but just not yet maybe the last week of August, or a loan from a prem club when the 25 man squads are made?

Think this is a cracking signing, shame it's took so long though with Sven looking at other options. If we had signed him up a few weeks back he would have had more time to gel within the squad and what not.

Is the Greek league any good? Always striked me as being fairly decent :dunno:
