dave_the_fox Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 misleading. He scored 10 league goals in 17 league starts (plus 46 substitute appearances), and 10 cup goals in 14 starts (plus 9 sub appearances). He also played wide left for Blackburn on a number of occasions, so I'd humbly suggest we don't write him off just yet, but be glad we're finally closing in on a much-needed signing who won't blow a huge hole in the budget - freeing up money for strengthening other parts of the squad Stolen from a Brum forum. All seems relevant and makes for much better reading
Babylon Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 How the hell can people say the two of them aren't good enough to mount a challenge. QPR and Norwich managed it without a superstar striker. And don't mention Holt because nobody would have said he'd do as well as he did this time last year.
jonw88 Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 Derbyshire would be great at this level, was very promising at Blackburn a few years ago and could have done even better if given the playing time. Contract wise, is he still tied up at Olympiakos or available on a free transfer? If still under contract, what do you reckon we'd have to pay for him?
thybluefox Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 Not completely sold, mainly because my only real opinion of him is coming from what I'm reading/seeing on youtube. Neither him or Nugent sound like theyre going to score 20 next season, but then none of us actually know either way, even goldenboy Yak could end up scoring below expectations.

Holt was last seasons surprise player to be fair and mackie did fantastic for warnock till his injury

Lineker's Left Foot Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 Although he didn't pull up trees at Brum, not sure if I'm missing something and always thought he was a class player - especially during his Blackburn days. He is still young enough and hungry... EXACTLY the player we need and he will be coming along with Nugent - not instead of - I'm sure !!

PWII Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 Sven is looking at players who have been suggested and watched by scouts in the business. Big names are still on the agenda, but the board trust Sven, and are happy for him to build the squad he needs/wants for promotion. This is personally a much better way of looking at transfers than searching for that 'big name' all the time. Anyway I have said too much.
Hack Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 If this is the standard of player we will be going for throughout the transfer window, there is going to be MAJOR dissatisfaction. We will not make the top 6 with players this. And as for favourites....Don't make me LARF !!!!! WHERE'S THE MONEY GONE! Who do you expect we would sign Balotelli? Tevez? Hernedez? Matt Derbyshire is better than championship quality and would do a great job for the club. If we go up more than capabile of handling the step up. Still doesn't mean we won'y sign Yak.
StarFox Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 I personally don't think people have done their calculations. I don't want to go into the whole transfer budget debate but IF we do happen to have 10 million pounds to spend on new signings this summer, and many of us think we need about 5 new players then this probably means we shouldn't be paying any more than 2 million pounds (on average) for a single player. Basically that means signing a single player for 4 or 5 million wouldn't be a good way the spend the transfer budget. Do others agree? It seems as though this kind of player would probably be a good way to spend our money.

IF we have £10million, I'd imagine that'd include wages as well as the fees players would command, bear that in mind, too.

artursteppe Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 Both Nugent and Derbyshire are quality players, real quality for the Championship, and they both score goals. They can play across the spectrum of the front line, have skill and vision, what some might call intelligent players, who will be able to fit into any team who want to play controlling football and integrate with other players around them. I've gotta say, if Sven brings these two guys into the club there is only one guess on the style of football we will play. Quality! If we play these two guys in a 4-3-3 formation, with someone like Nicky Maynard it will be awesome, with Vassel and Schlupp as well to call on. Marvellous!
Hack Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 Nugent, Derbyshire, Vassel, Howard and Waghorn, i believe aren't going to be good enough for us to go up automatically. Was hoping for a 'bigger' named signing, but i guess Sven knows what he's doing, hopefully. I would expect Howard and probably Waghorn to be moved on. So you can add Yak as well. Nugent, Yak, Derbyshire, Vassell is a very strong front line in the championship. Add to that young Schlup (however you spell it) as our you future star.
StarFox Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 IF we have £10million, I'd imagine that'd include wages as well as the fees players would command, bear that in mind, too. Yup. Good point. It also gets a little more complicated when we also include free transfers and money for selling players.
80footgiraffe Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 its looking like derbyshire, hogiliigu guy, peltier, nugent, yak and maynard are all possibles ....although nugent has signed

Neither him or Nugent sound like theyre going to score 20 next season, but then none of us actually know either way, even goldenboy Yak could end up scoring below expectations. I understand what you're saying. But I think this could be one of those situation where the right players are being pick for their place in the team. Let's not lose faith in players still at the club, I can see abe with his confidence high rippling a few nets next season, plus gally, king, I can see those guys with 25+ between them, and couple of strikers with 15+ each then a few from our newly formed defence, As well as the fringe players, we should be Lookin at low to mid 70's. That's all good as long as the defence don't let more goals in than we score. The defence will be the decider with our league position. As with every team which gains promotion. But we need the right players, I hate to harp back, but look at the players MON bought in, they were a scrappy looking bunch of never heard of yas! History has them down as LEICESTER LEGENDS.
Callabinho Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 Who did we expect? Hernandez? Matt derbyshire at this level would be leathal, he is a quality player at least let him kick a ball before we judge, this could free up wages for maynard?

Brown Fox Posted 17 June 2011 Posted 17 June 2011 would not mind a front three of: Nugent-Vassell-Derbyshire I still think Vassell is very much underrated by a lot of people and he showed on every occasion when he played down the middle that he is very dangerous. He might not score 20 a season but i think the goals would be spread around a bit more. 12 goals each for them is very realistic, giving them 36 goals over the season, and would better our account from last season of 25 goals shared between Gally-Yak-Vassell.
