Alright everyone. New member so go easy on me. I think derbyshire and nugent are solid signings if they go through

I think it's important to draw a distinct line between the premiere league and championship. As fans it's easy to want triple A signings but what we need is players who can do a job in the championship.

Welcome to the forum. Nice to read some fresh opinions and I agree with you comment.

fact- west ham have parachute payments and their board need to gamble and spend big to get back to the premier league before they move into the olympic stadium. we can't compete with them financially currently. as the sensible posters (babylon, bert etc) on here keep saying - be patient! sven needs to build a squad as well as a team. this will be a mix of the young and hungry, championship experienced and probably some bigger name signings.

Fact West Ham are also 70 million plus in debt

Could be just what we need. If I remember rightly he was always a pretty good finisher for Blackburn. How many times last season did we come away from games complaining of missed chances costing us? We create a lot of chances as a team and if we can lift the conversion rate then there shouldn't be too many sides above us.

Fact - We're trying to balance the books to safeguard our future, with the aim of then establishing ourselves back in the top flight. West Ham clearly aren't and aren't showing any signs of stopping either.

Hasn't he got a really poor goals to game ratio for his career?

Yakubu has got a great one and loads of people don't want him it seems.

Massive gamble from West Ham they've got this season to go up or see them do a Leeds and fall to obvillion.

Why bring Yakubu into the topic of Matt Derbyshire? It just seems completely irrelevant.

Yet completely relevant to the point somebody made. Jesus.

If he had a goals ratio more to your liking, he wouldn't be playing in the championship would he?

For me it's not about individuals, it's about the individuals playing as a team, working for each other, making chances, bringing the best out of each other, complimenting each others play. This guy, Nugent, Gallagher, Vassell, Waghorn = options. Good options. Rotate the front three in the team. Get them moving during games, constantly rotating positions during the games. 4-3-3 works best with players rotating positions in game. We don't want a static front 3, and we certainly don't need a static front three with a static front man i.e. Yakubu.

35 goals in 145 appearances for all of his clubs and for England. That is just poor :(

People say he was good for Blackburn. 10 goals in 63 appearances is not good for a striker.

Danny Graham scored 47 goals in 150 appearances before he joined Watford. Stats tell you nothing. Derbyshire is a talented player, who I believe would be an excellent signing for City.

and they have about 40 mill of talent to sell and parachute payments on top so apart from going down just as good a possition as us unless they fail to get up in two years our main rivels imo

Many appearances as sub in there though, plus it's a completely different level. Who knows, find the right system and players around someone and the goals can flow.

If Nugent and Derbyshire are an indication of the type of player Sven is after, then i'm more than happy.

Keep up the good work, and the fans crying out for a 'big name' can fuck off and support Man Utd and the like.

You're a patient man, i'll give you that.

They'll not get £40m for Parker, Green, Upson and Hitzlsperger. I'd be surprised if they got £25m for them.

They've just paid £3m for Kev Nolan coupled in with his £2.5 million a year wages, as well as signing a couple of other players. One of our main rivals, any team from about 10-12 could win the league.

Same here, players with quality. Admittedly they have lost their way a bit, but that means they have something to prove and should be hungry. They are also a good age where you have potential to make a profit or your money back.

Much better than ageing has beens I feared we could get.

Patience is a virtue.

People are so obsessed with signing a 'big name' and 'splashing the cash' it sickens me. Do they not realise that it is possible to operate shrewdly in the transfer market to get results, and ultimately remain financially stable?

I know people get bored with the harking on back to the days under O'Neill but during those times (particularly in the early years) we went out and signed players that were relatively unknown but with a point to prove. Savage, Lennon, Izzet, Guppy, Elliott etc. None of those players cost a huge amount, but went on to play an instrumental role in what was one of the most successful periods in the clubs history.

Nugent and Derbyshire for me, are two players who won't cost the earth, have shown as youngsters to have considerable talent, and most definitely have points to prove.

Give them a chance and for Christs sake, show a bit of faith in Sven. I'm sure he's working overtime behind the scenes to sign players that will get us out of this league without having to cripple the club financially.

true foxofderby- and that's my point. most premier league sides coming down have substantial debt and need to get back up in the period that the parachute payments allows them to service that debt and assemble/ retain a decent playing squad. for the irons the added pressure of moving to the olympic stadium means that they need to get back even sooner or things could look bad!

Read the thread. He started 17 games for Blackburn. The rest he probably had 5 minute appearances. He also scored 10 goals in 14 starts in cup games (9 subs)
