Don't be silly, you have to nail your colours to the mast now. You either love him or hate him... you choose.

Ah, fair enough.

In that case, I think I'll hate him, cos then I can start calling him Twat Derbyshite.

I'm not at all certain about this.

On the positive side he will presumably not command a transfer fee and he has in the past been a reasonable player.

However, is his a career in terminal decline? Over the years I've seen quite a lot of Greek football and the overall standard is really not that great. It is a bit like Scotalnd with a small number of big clubs who are quite good and several smaller clubs which would struggle in the championship. Friends in Athens tell me he was ok to start with but wasn't a massive hit. Basically since he last played for the under 21s in 2009 he seems to be going backwards. To me he is a gamble. He could turn his career around but equally he could be a waste of time. There's no doubt he has had some quality in the past the question is can he still do it? The evidence of the last couple of years is not convincing.

Good point Greek football is very poor and if he has been so great there then why has nobody bothered to bring him back in the past sounds to me likeGallys put a good word in for him, also its alright saying he will be good at championship level but we want to finish above West Ham and Birmingham surely and they are Premier league defenders ! The really worrying thing is that unlike a lot of teams in this league we only have half a team and need to sign a number of players before the pre season to let them bed in to the squad we have yet again what i consider a tough start to the season lets hope we hit the ground running this year as the pressure will mount and we dont want another wasted season!!!

If it makes you feel better, look at portsmouth. If the season were to start right now then they wouldn't be able to field a full senior team. :giggle:

1) Relevance is a relative, not an absolute term. I said you'd left out the most relevant info. You've now included it, thanks. Surely you'd agree that his performance in the Greek top flight in 2010 is more relevant than his record in League 2 in 2006?

2) Last time I checked, subs were allowed to score goals. I agree saying he has a 1 in 4-5 record is misleading due to the number of minutes played, but the 1 in 2 record you're suggesting is just as wrong. The link to soccerbase, whilst comprehensive, merely serves to show the selectivity of the stats you posted.

3) Fair cop on the champions league point, you never said that.

4) nobody's points on this subject are "damaging".

I can accept all of these points. But with the last one, I do think the spoilt and demanding nature of our fans is damaging, it certainly makes Sven's job harder. Not much we can do about it though.

My problem is this:

Publicly, the club are attempting to sign 'superstars' ie Given, Yak, Owen, etc, Yet the reality is our actual signings are more low key!

I don't mind Nugent and Derbyshire as such but I wish the club wouldnt bullshit us in order to boost season ticket sales!

Remember in the 90's when we signed 'England Ace' Ricky Hill?

Good quote i always remebered him as Ricky Over the Hill

Thirteen pages of arguing about something nobody has a fvcking clue about.

He could be the next Ryan McGivern, he could be the next Muzzy Izzet. How about giving the lad a chance to show us what he can do at this level before judging him?

Well said. :appl:

Not going through 13 pages of this thread so apologies if it has been said, but, Tony Cottee did really well for us when he came back to the UK, no reason Matt can't do the same. I know that I'll get slated but I will say one thing, he's not even kicked a ball for us yet. Give him a chance.

I know everyone wants the big-name sigings but it's not the be-all and end-all...I only knew a few players from the Norwich side that just got promoted and they were not a side full of superstar big names..

I recall a certain Darius Vassell joining us from a Turkish club, lacking fitness and finding back into the game within the matter of weeks.

Misconceptions and prejudices don't really help.

Whether it's Derbyshire or Nugent - stop slating players before you've even seen them in a Leicester shirt.

Merc.

Former Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City striker Derbyshire emerged as a possible target yesterday.

But, despite speculation, it is understood a deal for the former England under-21 striker is far from done.

The 25-year-old, who is close friends with City favourite Paul Gallagher from their days together at Blackburn, has two years left to run on his contract at Greek side Olympiacos but has been told he is not in their plans for next season and to find another club. He spent last season on loan at Birmingham but failed to establish himself in the side.

He scored three times in 20 appearances in all competitions last season.

Always rated Derbyshire and certainly the sort of player that will get us out of this league, QPR went about their business quietly and Warnock shuffled his pack well when he needed to, I am personally sick and tired of hearing us linked with Given, Owen etc and couldnt give a monkeys about Yakubu, anyone who stalls on such a move thinks he's bigger than the club already, if he wants Premier League then go find it.

My only slight concern with going for players from League 1 like Peltier is not only are we expecting them to step up a league, but also take us to the premier league, Derbyshire has had top flight experience, but Peltier etc could be the next Tom Kennedy.

As long as we continue to seek and target players like Maynard, Derbyshire, Nugent, Danns I believe we are on the right track, Derby seem to have taken up most of the scottish contingent moving south of the border which is a relief.

You mean like the entire Nowich team who went from league 1 to Premier league in 2 seasons.

People are so obsessed with signing a 'big name' and 'splashing the cash' it sickens me. Do they not realise that it is possible to operate shrewdly in the transfer market to get results, and ultimately remain financially stable?

I know people get bored with the harking on back to the days under O'Neill but during those times (particularly in the early years) we went out and signed players that were relatively unknown but with a point to prove. Savage, Lennon, Izzet, Guppy, Elliott etc. None of those players cost a huge amount, but went on to play an instrumental role in what was one of the most successful periods in the clubs history.

Nugent and Derbyshire for me, are two players who won't cost the earth, have shown as youngsters to have considerable talent, and most definitely have points to prove.

Give them a chance and for Christs sake, show a bit of faith in Sven. I'm sure he's working overtime behind the scenes to sign players that will get us out of this league without having to cripple the club financially.

Exactly the point I made earlier, We need players who will gel as a unit, and that does not necessarily mean big name signings, who won't fit into the squad.

Agree with this completely.. Quality is important but so is camaraderie (is that how it's spelt?). A happy squad, playing for each other makes a huge difference

I agree with your point but using Vassell as an example isn't exactly proving much.

For me he has been average for the most part, has shown signs of class but has also been ineffectual at other times too.

Some may well think better of him but I'll bet there will be those who don't really rate him in equal measure.

In all fairness, it would help if we played him in his actual position in the middle instead of on the wing. :)

He signed a four-year contract on 23 June 2009.

Won't be a free.

You're talking a good £1.5mil or more IMO.

It was reported in one of the press articles that even though he had a few years left on his contract with greek club, he was not in their plans for the next season and should look for another club. If a few were to be required I don't see it being a 7 figure sum.

He has been told by his club he is free to find another club.... you dont do that and expect a large fee.... especially after not scoring in 13 games whilst on loan in the prem.

they seem to just want him offf the wage bill....

I'd be more surprised if the Mercury journo's tweet about positive transfer news wasn't referring to Derbyshire. Seems to be the only deal we've heard about that hasn't hit a snag in some way.
