To sign Nolan, west ham took out an unsurcured loan so they could pay his transfer fee and wages for the first year. They are banking on promotion and should they not get promoted, not only will they have an empty ground but the only thing that will save them from going under is upton park. Glad im a leicester fan

Teams of individual players don't get promoted that often. Teams made up of players pulling together & playing as a team however usually do. A team made up of players like Nugent & Derbyshire-talented at this level & have somthing to prove-could be the way forward.

Bringing in Derbyshire looks like Waghorn is off, both quite similar players. Maybe Waghorn is to be offered to Bristol to get Maynard? Or as a make-weight in another deal?

I like Derbyshire, I was surprised Blackburn didn't try harder to keep him when he went to Greece. I only hope that his underwhelming spell at Birmingham where he spent most of the time overlooked on the bench, hasn't knocked his confidence too much.

35 goals in 145 appearances for all of his clubs and for England. That is just poor :(

People say he was good for Blackburn. 10 goals in 63 appearances is not good for a striker.

Wikipedia says 48 goals in 171 appearances plus 10 assists

He's been playing in Europe and in the prem all his life why would he be a 'solid back up player' to a championship side. Just because he's not a big name (even though he's a bigger name than most players in the championship) doesn't affect if he scores or not. We had the luxury of having yakubu score goals for fun without even trying but if it's not sustainable for the club to put him on a long term highly paid contract then they won't do it. Were Danny Graham, Grant Holt, Lucciano Becchio big names when they topped the scoring charts? No. So what is the obsession with bringing in someone who has a bigger name when Matt Derbyshire could probably be on that top scorers list.

Fair point, but Anthony Elding just came back from a spell in Europe and got relegated with Stockport from league two. Doesn't make him a world beater.

Derbyshire's done nothing yet in his career to suggest he's going to be prolific at this level. Maynard and others have.

As i said earlier, if we can supplement this deal with a proven centre forward, fantastic. If we're backing Derbyshire to shoot us to glory, then it's a huge risk.best of luck to him though, I hope he signs.

Edit: I never said "solid back up player". If we signed him I'd expect him to start most games. But I can't imagine he'd be one of the first names on the team sheet, hence "solid squad player".

Yeah that's overall in his career, the other one was on about his league goals and goals for england

Yeah i get you. Though there is a difference between Champions League football and the Hungarian 1st division :P

And yep i agree he hasn't shown through his career he'd be prolific, but he's shown enough that he can handle the Premiership and Champions League and if he can do that I have no doubts he could easily step down to the Championship and show his class. I also don't think we'd be relying on Derbyshire to shoot us to glory as we would Yakubu because we all know Yakubu scores for fun, yet Derbyshire would probably fit more into the team and make it into a strong unit. As I said before (not sure if this thread) If him Vassell and Nugent could get 12 each we'd be laughing because as a unit we'd score more goals rather than relying on Yakubu to score every other game.

1 in 6 for a young lad playing in a poor ish team in the premier league ain't to bad in my opinion. And as has been pointed out, I'd like to see how many of those appearances were as a sub. Maybe we should look at his goals to starts ratio. Looks like he scored 1 in 3 while in Greece according to that wiki page. Quite looking forward to seeing him down here.

Gotta say guys if we are signing players like Matt Derbyshire then i fear the worst did anybody see him in the Carling Cup Final absolute waste of space, with Vassells goal contribution and Derbyshires contribution we will really be going places, Derbyshire reminds me of Graham Fenton just another stop on the downward spiral of a under21 star!! Typical Sven never sees beyond a name surely there must be better hungrier players in the lower leagues!!!

Allow a bad game against Arsenal. Playing against defenders of someone like Barnsley is completely different, people seem to forget he has never played at this level so stats are irrelevant

People are so obsessed with signing a 'big name' and 'splashing the cash' it sickens me. Do they not realise that it is possible to operate shrewdly in the transfer market to get results, and ultimately remain financially stable?

I know people get bored with the harking on back to the days under O'Neill but during those times (particularly in the early years) we went out and signed players that were relatively unknown but with a point to prove. Savage, Lennon, Izzet, Guppy, Elliott etc. None of those players cost a huge amount, but went on to play an instrumental role in what was one of the most successful periods in the clubs history.

Nugent and Derbyshire for me, are two players who won't cost the earth, have shown as youngsters to have considerable talent, and most definitely have points to prove.

Give them a chance and for Christs sake, show a bit of faith in Sven. I'm sure he's working overtime behind the scenes to sign players that will get us out of this league without having to cripple the club financially.

As has been mentioned by other posters in this thread. It takes a good team of players to get out of this league who are happy and have a good understanding. If we do get Matt D. I think it will have a very positive effect on Paul Gallacher esspecially. As it seems they are very close friends they having played together, their combination could be something special. Paul on one of the wings Derbyshire up top. Watching these two trying to produce for each other will be fun.

Seriously, your MacKail-Smith-bumming is getting to close to ridiculous.

Can't you be happy for once without having to come up with a "but..."?

As I said I was giving an answer to a question.. Just back off and annoy some other victim

Theres a huge gap in quality between The Premiership and Championship... As you will find Premiership players who dont really set the place alight seem to find there level in The Championship.. We want them "hungry" "something to prove" type of players at this club..

My problem is this:

Publicly, the club are attempting to sign 'superstars' ie Given, Yak, Owen, etc, Yet the reality is our actual signings are more low key!

I don't mind Nugent and Derbyshire as such but I wish the club wouldnt bullshit us in order to boost season ticket sales!

Remember in the 90's when we signed 'England Ace' Ricky Hill?

Where is the bullshit. It is still mid June. Just becasue the likely early signings are not what you would call superstars, doesn't mean they are not either on the real radar or likely to sign. Players of the ilk that you are talking about are going to use as much time as possible to see what their options are. We may still end up being the best options for Given Yak etc.

We are trying to sign Yakubu and did sign him last season on loan. The only comment the club made about the others you mentioned was months ago, and Sven just said if the players were available and would be willing to drop down he'd love to sign them. But even then he said it was unlikely.

The club haven't "bullshitted" anyone. The only people doing that are on here, twitter etc. People need to take note of what people ACTUALLY say, rather than what it's twisted into by others. They also need to stop believing every rumour that surfaces.

We are not Manchester United or Real Madrid, we are an unglamorous midlands team with a couple of quid more than usual to spend.. We aren't going to be signing superstars.

I think people are losing a grip on reality.

Does nobody remember QPR's low-key signings last season?

Here's the team they put out against us at Loftus Road.

01 Kenny

02 Orr

03 Hill

05 Hall

41 Shittu

04 Derry

07 Taarabt

10 Buzsaky

11 Faurlin

15 Routledge

09 Helguson

Substitutes

24 Cerny, 16 Connolly, 23 Moen, 25 Ephraim, 20 Hulse, 21 Smith, 29 Miller

Where are the Premiership stars in that team? Taarabt was a Tottenham cast-off, Kenny signed for them while still serving a drugs ban and Clint Hill signed from a Palace side that avoided relegation by the skin of its teeth. That side still got promoted though because it had Championship experience and the team worked for one another, which is exactly what we should be looking to emulate. Derbyshire has done well in the Premiership before and although he had a poor season last season, he was part of a pretty average Birmingham side that was going nowhere but down. At a club playing a division lower but with Premiership aspirations, he can do well for us. We as fans need to stop the snobbery towards so-called lesser known players such as Derbyshire, I'm pretty sure Maynard would bag more than Owen in this league for example but I know which signing would somehow bring about more excitement to some fans.

I'm not against low key signings and agree with your post, I'm against the perception coming from the club that we are signing 'stars' we wouldnt even know about MD if it wasn't for a tweet!

I can't believe people on here think we'll sign Nicky Maynard, guaranteed he,ll sign for someone else (in my opinion anyway)

I think this is the right type of player for us to sign, although Yakubu would be a great signing my biggest worry is what if we don't go up?all these so called "big stars" are not going to want two seasons in the championship especially if we are haing to twist there arm to get them here for one.
