Midfield?

Now I'm all for the 'patience' aspect of our transfer dealings and I'm not worried that we will miss out on transfer targets but what does concern me is that we haven't, to my knowledge, been linked with anyone in the middle of the park yet.

We've been linked with just about every striker in the world including Heskey, Maynard, Nugent, Yakubu and now Derbyshire. I'm defence we had the loanees from last year plus 3 or 4 keepers. Even among ourselves there has been very little talk about the midfield.

For me this is where we were lacking most last season. King and Wellens were pretty much guaranteed a starting place with Abe and Oakley filling in for each other. We had no real option to change it around and it looked obvious to me that the midfield was the reason we stuck with that formation.

Viera on a free? Is Owen Hargreaves worth the trouble? Although I refuse to buy into all the media speculation surrounding any "linked" players I wouldn't mind seeing a midfielder linked, so does anyone have any suggestions or seen any speculation?

Lee Peltier is about the only player "linked" with us that can play CM. But I imagine if we're signing him it would be to play at the back. Vieira is a good shout, we need someone like him, without a bit of fight, and dare I say it "PASHUUUUUN"

In my opinion we have 3 solid midfielders (Wellens, King and Abe) plus decent backup in Oakley. We also have players like Gallagher who aren't midfield players but have recently played in a role that bridged that gap between midfield and up front. Furthermore last season we had players like Sol Bamba and Jeffrey Bruma who have been known to want to take the ball forward a little bit. As a result I think Sven hasn't been that concerned about the midfield but I would be surprised if we didn't sign a single midfielder this summer.

That's the way I look at it, but I'm sure others may disagree,

We don't know what formation Sven is going to play this season, Oakley is decent back-up and how I love Yuki Abe to bits I feel he may be used as a sub this season if we get someone in.

I think we need an extra central midfielder, but I would be looking at another winger if he plays 4-4-2, Gallagher on one wing with someone on the other we don't really have anybody, Dyer won't play and there is Vassell but if we are buying I doubt he will start.

Danns and Eagles have been linked but that's about it so far.

I thought last season when Oakley didn't start Wellens played much better. I think the midfield was the only element of the team that worked last season, it wasn't changed every five minutes. King, Gally, Abe and Wellens made a good midfield for us, when they were in form they really were the driving force. King and Gallagher go forward and put the ball in the net. Yuki dashes back to help in the defence and Wellens is a nice centre piece. It would be nice to have a winger like Steve Guppy in the side. But I don't think midfield is a major concern.

The midfield is where we need to strengthen the most. Made the point last season that we need a tough-nut in there, a ball-winner who can get his foot in and lay it off. This player also has to be vocal and lead the others. IMO this is what city lack. It's no coincidence that warnock had Shaun Derry to do that last season and allardyce has signed Nolan to do it this

Shout me down if you like but this player ain't wellens or abe. They have their strengths but are not the type of player to which I refer.

Having said that, I can't think of many suitable at the present time?

Whilst I agree with what you are saying, it's not where we need to strengthen the most. Presuming Hobbs goes we need 3 centre halves, right back, left back, keeper.... I would say the back needs strengthening the most.

Like most I think we could do with what I call 'a dirty bastard' in midfield. The kind of player who breaks up attacks, completely roughs up the opposition and doesn't mind if they get a few bookings along the way. As long as the opposition don't score. (A De Jong type player. Obviously not him though.)

saying that Viera would make a very nice addition to the side. but I worry that he may be a bit big headed. any thoughts?

Yes I agree with you there, I think imo he has too big an ego to drop down into the Championship. I think he will be headed to The Continent/Europe.

I remember once when we played Arsenal at Filbert Street & Viera had taken some stick from the city supporters. At the final whistle he walked over to the away bench & gave the crowd the middle finger & a snarl on his face, cheeky sod! Made us laugh though!

If he is being considered by Sven, then that's good enough for me & as long as he soesn't come the prima donna stuff then he could be a cracking signing?

ive heard sven wants viera and will make him captain, also a coaching role possible

I ****ing hope not!!! He was shockingly awful against us twice last year and whenever I saw him for Man City he just looked like he's lost it. No thanks to another old, past it player.

I think we're fairly settled in midfield.

Vassell/Dyer - King - Wellens - Gallagher.

Even Oakley for backup if needed.

In my opinion Wellens and Abe are solid enough for a first team place.

However, I do think we need some quality in that midfield, or maybe some steel. Either way, I'd like another midfielder or two to cover as Oakley may not be good enough to provide efficient cover if we have an injury.

I don't rate Dyer or Gallagher.

Depends on what Svens plans are, I like the 4-3-3 meaning I'd like to see Abe -- Wellens -- new player.
