Amy Winehouse RIP

It was constructive, it was just something you disagreed with, and got mardy about.

If you're not that bothered why don't you stay of the topic and let those that do care and I'm not one that will lose any sleep over her leave their condolences without having to argue the toss whether it's deserved. It's all down to personal opinion you've expressed yours that should be enough.

It's somewhat ironic that for someone with your views you're the highest poster in the topic by some distance.

One thing I would like to ask, and I am genuinely interested in the response, is what the general reaction would be to the death from lung cancer of a lifelong smoker? Or if a long-term alcoholic were to die of cirrhosis of the liver?

Like Winehouse both would be perfectly aware that their addiction would be likely to kill them, and that their behaviour would be deeply hurtful to their families.

Fair enough, though I'm only defending myself against the slagging off from one member in particular.

ever heard of war? two way thing. dealer vs junkie, not fair fight

Junkies get what they deserve. They know the dangers, BEFORE, they start taking them. They are the scum of the earth, along with dealers, and cost the NHS, millions of pounds a year On top of that, many commit crime as a result, and confronting drugged up people is not nice, as they cannot be reasoned with. I would't piss on them if they were on fire.

Always nice to see the caring and compassionate views of the police

You know the same can be said for alcohol and food regarding the NHS

I think there's a subtle distinction in that you're unlikely to die early from smoking, whereas Winehouse is dead at 27 from drug-taking.

I broadly agree with lcfcstu. Nobody likes to see a young life lost but she had all the help money could buy and threw it all away.

If it was a close friend or relative most people would naturally be very upset , but the rest of the world would probably be totally indifferent to the death is my opinion ,

But deaths such as those in 911, 7/7 , Baby P , JFK , MLK, Diana , Oslo attack , deaths of soldiers fighting in wars , etc etc etc , do not leave us feeling indifferent, regardless of our relationship with the victims because of the deeper implications .

Lots of people just look upon the death of Amy as tragic for her family etc. ,but I (and I suspect most people) are not pleased she's dead , but like the examples you gave in the question , just indifferent

Is that what you are asking ?

And tobacco

Do all people who lead less than a perfect live deserve to die

Think how much the nhs would save if we simply shot fatties with heart disease, smokers with cancer, people with melamoma who hadn't used the proper SPF etc

Prepare to get shot down in flames...!

Here's a question for Amy's fans.

If someone had killed her, you'd hate them wouldn't you?

Bears thinking about.

lcfcstu still posting in here?

Sort your life out son, I think everyone knows your view on this, and still nobody gives a fuck about what you have to say.

Yup.

A valid answer. I do feel people would be a lot more sympathetic towards someone who died as a result of smoking induced lung cancer or alcohol related cirrhosis, even though the basic principle of their being partly self-inflicted is the same. That's not to say we should feel less sympathy towards those people by the way before anyone thinks I'm suggesting that.

Primarily what I'm asking is what the reaction would be if someone were to say 'about time' in either of the two cases, as I seem to remember the likes of Alex Higgins and George Best eliciting rather more sympathy in spite of they too being hopeless addicts much like Amy Winehouse. It is after all the same principle.

She had some talent, but i couldnt care less! She had the help etc and she rejected it, only her self to blame, what makes me sad is that she gets more attention than the Norway Attacks. As a BBC presenter said: "lets remember Amy for the things she was successful at" (yeah injecting needles in her arm and snorting Cocaine everyday! thats what she was good at)

I think a lot of people felt quite angry with George Best about the way he took a new liver and then ruined that too.

There's a couple of differences between Best & Higgins and Winehouse.

Firstly, George Best and Alex Higgins were true greats - they are amongst the top 10 in their profession of all time, almost indisputably. Amy Winehouse, talented as she may have been, would surely not figure in any list of the top 10 musicians of the last 100 years. Talk of her being in the "27 club" alongside legends like Hendrix, Morrison and Cobain is futile really: at best she will be a footnote to this bizarre quirk.

Secondly, Best, and to a lesser extent Higgins, were at their peak when they displayed a gripping, boyish enthusiasm for their chosen perfection. Best, in particular was a good-looking lad and caught the imagination of the public both on- and off-the pitch with his audacity. By contrast, Winehouse was a morbidly skeletal figure for the majority of her musical career, and, for better or worse, I think that this has led to less sympathy from the public. Looking at that picture on the first or second page of this thread, I had no idea that she ever looked as full and curvy as she once did - my entire experience of her is of her being drug-addled. It doesn't feel so much like a human tragedy because, for almost her entire period in the media spotlight, she has been desperately unhealthy.

Thirdly, Best and Higgins' lives unravelled largely out of the public eye. The distance between their success and demise was so great that it was almost a case of "oh look at Alex Higgins, how sad to see someone who was so great fall apart like that and meet such a terrible end". Amy Winehouse's death has been played out in the public eye for the last 5 years. Perhaps people's empathies have been and gone in that time.

This also leads on to the idea of Winehouse having "unfinished business". At 27, potentially she had 10,15,20 years of producing top-quality music left. Best and Higgins' careers, magnificent as they had been, had been and gone. To some extent their deaths were products of having reached the summit and knowing that the only way was down. Winehouse was at the top of her game when she fell apart, and has left the public wanting more. I think that on a subliminal level, where Best and Higgins had fulfilled their obligation of showcasing their talent to the public for as long as possible (although Best obviously left United young), Winehouse did not do that.

I don't for one minute think it's morally right that all of these things cause differences in public opinion but I do think all of these things conspire to provide the differing reactions to their deaths. As I said earlier, I actually think that a lot of people felt that Best had pissed his life away and were quite angry about it.

I think I should re-emphasise that this it is sad that such a talent has been wasted in this way. It does deserve to be reported on in the papers, if only to serve as an example of the awful effects of excess drink and drug-taking.

Within 2 days of the funeral, when her songs fade from the radio.. all will forget - all but her family and fans.. I`d have said friends too but it doesnt look like she had any..

Why is it when an artist/musician dies, people start becoming a fan when they never were before?

I'm seeing loads of friends on Facebook "liking" her page now all of a sudden. It bewilders me that now she's dead why they didn't like her when she was still here.

There's a lot of good sense in what you say ( as always ) but as far as i'm aware no-one forces them to take it .

try this analogy

What you are saying is , blame the prostitute( the pusher ) and totally absolve the man who

hires a prostitute ( the user ) for the user's downfall because he's a victim of his addiction

again, i respect your and everyone else's opinion , i just don't agree with your sentiments

I think using the Netherlands analogy is better: "florists", "flower buyers" and those bastards who cultivate the sodding smelly things in Dutch greenhouses.

How dare they foist their pollen laced suffering on the world! And yet, does anyone stop for a minute to gather outside an Interflora shop placing Glade airfresheners on the pavement? Do they bollocks. angry.gif

The world simply doesn't care.

In other news: if my wife reads this, I can not see the television for that huge bunch of blooms you have placed there.

Bastards.
