As I said didn't manage to watch the match and the whole point of it was to get the lads match fit for the season.

So the question is who looked ready for it and who do you think will need a couple of games to get there?

Yeah the players looked in top notch condition

Obviously Michael Johnson looked unfit, and also Michael Ball. Other than that, I can't remember a player looking significantly unfit.

Johnson looked unfit... And i thought Nugent faded a hell of a lot

Mills looked almost too up for it if thats possible

He's looks to be the number 5 we've misses for years

This.

We were chasing shadows for large parts of the game though. A good run out and I don't expect we'll be having to close down that much against cov.

With Sven playing the bizarre system he does it's hardly surprising nugent faded.. He's a good player but what asked to run around like a headless chicken with no support whatsoever. Nugent ain't unfit, just needs someone with him...

Nugent only faded compared to the others because his injury of recent has kept him out of training for about a week and a half.

He'll be back comes Coventry.

Can't imagine Johnson will start anytime soon, it would be a silly risk to take.

Everyone looked pretty sharp to me. I just hope we haven't forgotten how to dictate a game after playing such good opposition over the last few games.

Johnson looked like he's had a pint of IPA and a hot dog. Technically still got it but he looks better on the ball than off it

I agree with above posts, Matt Mills is the player we've been missing. He isn't afraid to get stuck in even in a friendly. He gave the ball away so he just put his head in, and I was more worried when he collided with their goalkeeper.

The players looked in good condition.

It was hot and we were chasing the ball a lot so they were going to tire.

In most home matches we'll have the majority of possession though.

It was very hot and the we were playing against Madrid

Yes we looked great out there.

Johnson was the only one who looked abit slow but that's work in progress

Also

When Mills gifted the ball too one of there players in the first ten minutes he pencil dropped to get the ball back and get a foul

I loved the devotion and heart

Been Missing that for years

Considering how warm it was, and the fact the whole team was chasing Madrid for large parts of the game, then trying to counter when we did get the ball, I was VERY impressed with the fitness. Coventry won't be a problem at all.

Have a bit of a different take on events. Yes Johnson looked unfit but expected. I thought Ball looked slightly out of shape but more worryingly I thought Konchesky looked fairly poor but I guess hes not going to be playing Real Madrid every week so its hard to judge. Im going to take my time over Mills. I have my suspicions regarding certain aspects of his ability and Saturday did nothing to quash that, however, again, it was Real Madrid.

Must admit im not his biggest admirer but I thought Vassell was excellent.

How was Konchesky poor?

As I said, very hard to critique a player, especially a defender when hes playing against Real Madrid, but as you've asked ill have a go. I thought he got caught out consistently with his positioning. Also, I thought his distribution was very average. He would look up and too often play the long ball or whack it down the channel. Again, he was up against Madrid so against the likes of Coventry he'll have more time and probably more attacking options to aim at. Im no Paulo Sousa-ite but im a fan of players that prefer to keep the ball on the floor and build attacks rather than take the easy option. Just my opinion though. Im sure the majority of people will completely disagree and they've every right to.

Good grief.....:o

Only 5 posts and you come up with something like that, soon get the sense knocked out of you on here....:P

For what it is worth I think what you say is correct but I will add that both fullbacks were put under a lot of pressure and as usual they were given no cover from midfield. What cover they did get came from the wide 'strikers' which naturlly meant they were too deep to support Nugent when we did get possession, so once again there was too much 'hoof'.

OK it was pre-season against a very good team but i would expect the back 5 that started yesterday to start and do a good job against Coventry, it's further forward where I have concerns. Johnson is nowhere near ready, Wellens was easily dominated yesterday and although both King and Abe played their usual games, neither were really effective.

To my mind midfield remains the Key, we really do not have an effective playmaker neither do we have a genuine 'sitting' player to shield the back 4. As I said many times last season we have a bunch of decent support players but lack the really pivotal player for them to support.

Hopefully I am wrong!.....:dunno:

Ive been lurking for quite a while but decided to start posting over the weekend in time for the new season. Was hoping people would just let me sheepishly creep through the door and take a seat but now you've pointed out my post count they'll be onto me! I also used to lurk on Bentleys Roof but got put off by the clikiness (not a word) and lack of football content vs off topic banter.

Yes Wellens was dominated yesterday. I must admit I really like Wellens and regard him as our best player although that may now change with the acquisitions. I think maybe he did not adjust his game to the opposition and got caught out a fair bit trying to do some feints/turns he'd get away with in the championship. I actually thought Abe looked unusually physical yesterday throwing himself into a few challenges. Maybe signs of him adapting to the english game. I think once we bring in this mystery striker we'll all feel a bit better about what we've got up top.

Could Gallagher be the playmaker with Bamba as the "sitting" player?

Gallagher doesn't fit the striker or wide men.

Fernandes (if/when he signs) and Johnson when he's fit. Simples.
