When will we ever learn?

Maybe we should have kept last years team then?

Well going on yesterdays performance I think we would have done better playing gallagher, king and dyer from the start to be honest. They provide what we lacked. Last years team as a whole lacked defensively and in the finishing department and thats what sven is trying to sort out. Still think it is important though to remember we have some quality players that are being left on the bench in replace of some of these "wonder" signings

Thracian...

You did yourself somewhat of disservice with your opening statement, which is a shame as pretty much everything else you say is spot on and many of our fans could learna lot from reading it.

I have a slightly more pragmatic view about the style we should play but there is absolutely no doubt that we are far too negative and lacking any verve or inspiration going forward.

Perhaps if this caution made us solid at the back I could relate to it, but it doesn't, it just makes us rubish going forward.

As for those pointing out that is only two games, you need to wake up, we have been playing like this for most of the last two seasons. We have had some pretty good players in that time but the tendency to 'go negative' against the better sides has cost us dear and still is.

I agree about King to replace the jaded Yuki yesterday, and maybe Schlupp shouldn't of started with hindsight but it would of been cruel to the lad not to give him a chance, that said Dyer is shit and doesn't warrant a place in our first team imo

I think Dyer is a good impact sub because of his pace. But yesterday obvs there was no vassell meaning other we werent exactly pacey. Maybe Dyer could have filled in for him better. He did have a decent game against Real and cov.

Maybe Schlupp would have had a chance if he'd not been pushed out to no-man's land on the wing and he'd had a couple of players like Gallagher, King and Dyer around him to work the ball off. As itis he had Konchesy and that said it all cos he had nothing and no-one. If Sven could have done more to make the lad look ineffective I don't know it would have only been to make him play standing on his head.

Dyer's drained of confidence and I'm not going to make a case for him as our ideal winger. But everyone used on our wings ends up looking shit - and has done for years, and more especially when King's not around to feed a few give and go's. We've no idea how to play and use wingers. But Dyer presents far more of a potential problem than what we had on Saturday and as such makes some space for others. At his best, at his fittest and at his most confident, he's still a threat. I'd be happy to have him in any side of mine.

But then, like oher players including Nugent, he'd have runners all around him screaming and shouting for the ball.

Thrace, you normally make some useful observations about footballing issues. But that was utter toss. Like others, I was tempted to ignore it after the nonsense of a first paragraph. League position? We're above Forest and isn't everyone worried about how they might be promotion rivals? I carried on though because you've made good points in the past.

Where you really lost me was when you suggested that our forwards would be better served by Gally, King and Dyer than by Danns, Fernandez and Johnson. All 6 are good players, but the last 3 are the better players (though on his day I'd include King with them.) The only reason they might play better in our team is because they've played together the past two years. It's rare a team has so many players making their competitive home debut in one game (8!) and we can't expect them to gel straight away.

Had the shot that Nugent hit the post with gone in, it could have been a different story. Such is football. I've been around long enough to know that one swallow (game) does not a summer (season) make. You should know that too.

It wasn't an option but why we'd take 20-odd goals out of our team (King and Gallagher) without having more goals to replace them, is beyond sense.

You can't judge this team yet. Yesterday was a bad day, for me Sven got the tactical side of things all wrong. No creativity in midfield, too many defensive midfielders and no width. We're not gonna win football matches playing that way.

We need another striker and possibly a winger as well. Hopefully lesson learned and we'll get back to winning ways on Wednesday.

So after considerable commitment last season and £14m spent on a new team this season Sven has a team that stands 15th in the table, is below the likes of Hull City and Derby, has not a chance of finishing in the top two league places and is about as entertaining as a rabbit sitting in the middle of a field.

You lost me within the first 2 lines. I didn't even read the rest. WE'VE PLAYED TWO LEAGUE GAMES NOT TWENTY.

F**K ME! :frusty:

I genuinely gave up reading anything further than first line when you actually started using the standings in the league to make your point.

I'm sure you have a good view points in there somewhere, but if the first line is an indication of your argument then :frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

You are such an idiot Thracian... you really are. lol. how sad a life must you live to get so upset after two games!

lol sure everyone was annoyed after the game... BUT ITS TWO BLOODY GAMES . You wonder why people critisize your posts and mock you? get a grip, man!

I agree with the comments made here. too -

Like most others it appears, stopped reading after you stated how shite we must be to be below Hull City and Derby after two games. lol

Because thought the defense has improved, it also needed to be improve within the midfield too. There has to be a compromise there too. We shipped a lot of goals even when Sven steadied the ship last season. It's a long season, and when Johnson eventually gets match fit, I think him and Danns and/or King will provide the goals from the area of the pitch.

What you are asking can't be achieved. ALL guns blazing team leaves us open at the back for a counter-attack, as we discovered to our loss last season.

Some of your posts are an interesting but what an idiotic post, judging players after two performances. Leicester City's history has no bearing on what went on yesterday. Southampton were renowned for having a stubborn side with unfashionable players like Dodd and Benali and you even commented how much they have changed.

The whole post is highly ironic especially as you are the first to talk up our own academy talent, views that you base on opinions formed over a long period of time, not 2 games......

Suggest this whole topic was written just to get this kind of reaction anyway, what a joke. Go and watch another team and take Claridge with you

Perhaps you should wait until the end of the season and see how many goals the 'Golden Boys' replacement scores before you criticise.

Two games man, two chuffing games.

You have shot your load way too soon mate.

You will be looking back on this and cringing in a couple of weeks.

meh...forums are there to express an opinion. It just fustrates me that someone who knows as much as Thracian about football can post such short-sighted rubbish. Turning it in to a long, elequently posted essay does not matter, it is the same effectively as the guys who come on here and say "we are rubbish, sack the board, Thais out" etc. Would love to know what Thracian thinks we should do now then. Should we just sell all these players we have just signed? Sig a load more? If Nugent's shot hits the post and goes in the game is totally different and Thracian does not post his comment. People need to understand that you can have all the best will and endevaour, skill and tactical prowess in the world but sometimes things just go crap. There were always going to be days like yesterday and it is how you bounce back that counts...

Despit it being long which initially put me off, I stopped reading after the start because we have played two league games and you are complaining that we are below other teams :frusty:

Why don't we have a chance of finishing in the top two? Because we lost one game. When Reading went up under Steve Coppell they lost their first match of the season 3-0 away at Plymouth. I know we have no goalscorer, or wingers (except Vassell) but we have played two games.

You could have said that entire post in a fraction of the words and you're jumping the gun massively. I could critique you further, Thracian, but I don't feel the need to.

It may only be two games in but the weaknesses that were all too evident last season still weren't addressed with any great effect in yesterday's game.

It was all too obvious what would happen in the first 45 when taking out Gallagher and King from the start. That was nonsensical to say the least. The problems with the 4-3-3 system were there for all to see yet again but what concerns me most taking into account "two" league games this season, but more importantly "countless" league games from last, we still don't appear to have an effective plan B, something with which to change it up and ask questions of the opposition when it isn't working.

Regardless of who is playing, by now the system should be better understood, the way to play as a unit in an attacking and defensive sense, but on yesterday's showing clearly that isn't there at all.

It's a shame but the system as it is at the moment is making what should be extremely competent footballers at this level look like mugs.

Beaten by a better outfit? No, I wouldn't say so. They were just drilled better to their way of play.

An inability to deal with this - who's fault is that?

Thracian, if we are anywhere below 7-8th in the table come December many of your points hold true. But we have played 2 league games..just two! Some may accuse you of have predefined opinions and 1 loss has given you this window to vent your anger. Lets wait till Dec mate, if we are not in top 8 or so in Dec, some major Qs need to be answered. But for now, just hang on..

Mate why Top 8? Surely top 6 should be the aim or even at a push in the Top 3
