maynefox Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Hello I'am going into to College next year, studying A-levels. I want a job so I can buy a car, go uni and be less dependant on my family's income. I know this seems desperate but I've tried like over 45 places across the city looking for work, 8 took my CV in and I've not heard anything in about a 3 weeks. Does anyone have relatives/colleagues/friends that have a job vacancy? Or if you have seen something popped up in a shop window the other day? If so could you please tell me where it is, then I can contact them etc. I know this is a long shot But hey, you gotta try to see if you succeed! Thanks

Thanks Nice one mate at least you are trying to get a job, daft question but have you tried going into temp agencys for some work, I know its not the best but if you just want something short term this might be a better option. You tried Leicester City to do some stewarding, I know its not a proper job but free way to watch City and you get some income at the end

Yes I have, went to the megastore, asked if they had anything there....no. then went into reception and asked if they had any job, they said they didnt. I'd love to work on match days like stewarding. I gave up my ST, to look for a job, was a big thing seeing I had one like 5 years beforehand I thought Its in the best interest to get one. Now I dont have a job or a ST (starting to regret it now...) Im gunna go on another massive job hunt around the city, when my GCSE results come out. (most of my rejections said to come back at the end of suggest for the Christmas push )
maynefox Posted 14 August 2011 Author Posted 14 August 2011 I admire you being so proactive. More kids your age should have your get up and go approach instead waiting for the world to come to them. Good luck Thanks It's really hard to find one for my age. Hardly any business are recruiting in the Long term, (I want a part-time job, potential to last till I go uni, hopefully). They want more experienced workers, and for me the only experience was work experience at Air Traffic Control at RAF Cottersmore We live in bad economic times, I've know changed my tactics, Which ill' start at the bottom and do some of the hard nitty grit stuff! I've realised ages like me who apply for your Topman's and River Island's are a bit daft, gotta make you way up from the bottom

You tried Leicester City to do some stewarding, I know its not a proper job but free way to watch City and you get some income at the end i thought the stewarding was done by a security company or something? as an old school friend of mine used to be the steward down there (stood infront of me during the scunthorpe game) told me one night he was working down at the airport security and then on the off days stewarded...might have been 2 jobs but i always thought it was the same job O_o
Rincewind Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 You need an SIA badge for stewarding now. Along with health and safety qualifications and other stuff. I tried there not received a reply yet or all the jobs were filled. I looked a few days ago and didn't see much. Even being on the gate or selling programmes requires asome qualifications in H&S. Think they were looking for hospitality staff and sellers of the overpriced burgers and drinks. I am in the same situation except I am at the other end of the age scale. I do have a SIA license but without my own transport I am limited to where I work because of the early/late starts. I have my email set up for job alerts and am now resigned to the possibility doing part-time cleaning jobs and just claim what I can to make my income better. Even for cleaning though a lot of places are asking for experience. I have an interview at the University next thursday. They have had some buildings done up/built and need teams of cleaners. Its 7-10 Mon-Th and 7-9.15 Fri and 20 min walk for me. I dont know if there is a minimum age or not but the woman on the phone I spoke to seemed friendly and helpful.. I have the contact number somewhere. It's not ideal work but it's something and for myself I don't mind doing part time now. Fed up with 12 hour shifts 48 plus hours a week at minimum wage.
adam1 Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Have you tried Boots? I think they are recruiting at the moment. My experience: Also where abouts are you based in Leicester? If you can get to Fosse Park they have a temp jobs fayre around now. These are for temp xmas jobs. With xmas looming large (shops start to take stock in end of August / early September) there should be a lot of temp jobs available. It may be temp but they often keep decent staff on (what happened to me). Make a list of shops in Leicester/Fosse Park or near to you. Check out their websites etc. Often they have a careers section of their site. A lot of vacancies are listed on these sites.

Thanks for the Info, firstly I hope you get that job It would be too commited, I have other things going on like playing cricket for my club, and football as well. Plus I'm starting college in 2 weeks time. some jobs i've applied for have times where i'll be busy in the week.
Rincewind Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 I even thought about advertising myself as a dog walker. I was coming back from town and saw acoule of people with about 3 dogs and the thought came to me. So if anyone on here wants their dog walked( or cat or fox) I'm your man. You could try it and it may even be cash in hand but you didn't hear that off me.

I tried them at the stores in town, that was in middle of July, I think they did their application online. I remember last year they had a poster up to recruiters for the Christmas Rush, I was 15 then, Ill try this year. I'm based in the Western Park are of the city:) So i can get to Fosse park, my mum can't drive me up their in the week, she has my other siblings to look after. My option is to catch the bus, (im reluctant to do so, I'm trying my hardest to boycott the bus because of its prices, that why town is ideal, I can walk there,or even bike it). Put my first priority is a job! Like I said, In the next week or so I'm gunna go on a big job hunt around the Western Park area (where the little shops are), Town and Fosse Park. Yes! I did that last time, made a list of the shops in town. I got approached by some dogey men claiming their job was "door selling" even asked my mobile number, before I asked what they represented

You could try it and it may even be cash in hand but you didn't hear that off me. I'd be glad for you to walk my dog........that is my little sister! Hahahah I have plenty of those in my garden too! On monday's they always come out on the lawn and at least 4 of them play fighting.....or extending their play fighting even more I might stet up a Fox version of the RSPCA....."Mayne's Urban Fox Shelter" On a serious note, My friend did a bit of that, he advertised for cleaning cars around his area. He got nothing from it, I think many residents are scared to let their vechiles/lawns be cleaned by a teenager, who is a stranger to them.
Rincewind Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Well lets face it all teenagers would only nicjk the car for joy riding then remove the wheels. Only joking. That only happens in Liverpool. It may be hard to get custom for that work but once you have done some they can pass the word around..
RAFRUDY Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 If you want to join the RAF then let me know and I can steer you in the right direction. They are desperate for new recruits, trust me.
maynefox Posted 14 August 2011 Author Posted 14 August 2011 If you want to join the RAF then let me know and I can steer you in the right direction. They are desperate for new recruits, trust me. Thanks Funny you should say that I went on the work experience at RAF cotter's, Because I wanted to be a pilot or work in ATC. I always wanted to be a pilot commercial or RAF. But for the time being like with most teenagers your course careerer changes from time to time. (I would love to be a war correspondent) Wernt they making some jobs at the RAF redundant, I heard they even released them while they were training?? Maybe if my mind changes again in the next few years, I researched alot into it with their programmes, how to get in, uni scholarships (forget what there called again...) For the time being I'd like to get a small part time job that will cover to uni
maynefox Posted 14 August 2011 Author Posted 14 August 2011 It should read "Vacancies"... Right you are! (can I change it? )
AMYB101_LCFC Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 To be honest I think your best bet will probably be trying to get yourself a Christmas temp job! That's what I did when I first turned 16, and even though it was only for like 2-3months, it helped me to get my next job! A good place for xmas temp jobs is Argos! When I was there, literally all the people that they employed at Christmas were aged 16-18. (They usually employ quite a few people too!) Just keep trying! It'll be hard, and you might get rejected a few times, but you'll get something eventually - even if it is crap!
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Is extremely hard to get a job when you are a young age. I'm 19 and have 3 good A-Levels and good GCSE's too and have been struggling for a job for a monthj or so now, despite endless applications. I've been focusing on office work mainly but have had the odd application for sales assistant roles too but have never had any reomote success. And without trying to be harsh I think I never get any luck with the sales jobs because I'm more qualified education wise than people who work there, especially those my age. I should start my training to become a Special Constable with Cambridgeshire Constabulary in September which will be voluntary and the training time is long but least I'll be doing something which is good I guess.
Dylan Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 It'll be even harder now as there are loads of people job-hunting due to being made redundant etc. Add that to the fact that many teenagers our age will want a job due to the fact that EMA has been cut will make it even harder! I luckily got a job at Asda, applied just before my exams before anyone else started looking for jobs to give myself a headstart. Keep looking through the vacancies of all supermarkets- Asda/Tesco/Morrisons etc. Also, as you're a football fan, have you considered refereeing? The course will be around £80, plus around £40 for kit but it's a great investment as you get paid from £25 a game, for an hour or so of refereeing 11 year olds on a Sunday morning! I'd highly recommend this.
Webbo Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Weren't the bookies in the ground advertising on here for staff on match days? If anyone can find the link I'd appreciate it for someone I know.
Rincewind Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 There is a sainsburys opening in september on Granby Street. Top end near the newly done crossing. And the cut price game/videos etc shop just a bit further down has a notice in the window about a part time vacancy. (it buys and sells stuff) I expect I may have more chance nearer xmas. If I cant afford to shave my stubble will grow into a white beard and I can get a job as Santa.

The Doctor Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 I'm not sure plying young children with real ale is part of the job description. Hmm not a bad idea, get young children to drink small quantities of booze under adult supervision, slowly increasing that amount as they age and they will be more capable of handling their alcohol when they start drinking out with their friends - less drunken incidents involving young adults and lower numbers of teenagers drinking out in parks.
