Job vacancies

Hello :)

I'am going into to College next year, studying A-levels. I want a job so I can buy a car, go uni and be less dependant on my family's income. I know this seems desperate but I've tried like over 45 places across the city looking for work, 8 took my CV in and I've not heard anything in about a 3 weeks. :frusty:

Does anyone have relatives/colleagues/friends that have a job vacancy? Or if you have seen something popped up in a shop window the other day? If so could you please tell me where it is, then I can contact them etc.

I know this is a long shot  But hey, you gotta try to see if you succeed!

Thanks :scarf:

iv done the same as you! gone around literally every shop near me, gave CV in, im looking for a full time job though, not really fussed about college but still nothing :/ no one want anyone these days! Ages ago you could of finished school one day and the next day get a job! not anymore though :frusty: :frusty:

I quit my job bout 3 years back to go spend 6 months in the state and then found myself back in England waiting for my permanent residency here so made good use in the temp jobs market with the recruitment agencies.

EXCEL recruitment agency ( bottom of charles street) supply the caterers at the King Power with any temp staff they need on a match to match basis for the food kiosks... they pay something like £30 quid to work 1-5 on match days... you often finish up by 4.30 and if you speak nicely to the correct steward they let you in for the last 15 minutes of the game... if thyey dont sell all the pies then you get to take them home too. Had 4 Balti Pies to take home after one game :D Only one made it home though.

its bob really but if you get in EXCEL's good books they then employ you and send you out to other jobs they may have... ( from experience!) http://www.misterwhat.co.uk/company/2335722-excel-recruitment-leicester-leicester

especially leading up to christmas A La Carte recruitment agency they supply ALL the leicestershire based food companies with temp christmas staff... like walkers pork pies and all that shizzle.... long hours decent pay ( 6 quid something) daft starts like 6am but you are home for mid afternoon...overtime too if you want it

http://www.alacarte-recruitment.co.uk/text.php

Without wishing to get too political i found it a real bonus that i spoke good English with A La Carte... gave me more work... Ended up working for the ye olde Pork Pie shop In melton Mowbray one year.. got some great discounts on lovely food items for me family that year...

If you are 16 then i would suggest heading down to connexions in town or whatever its called these days and ask if there is a free CV writing class that you could go to. usually like 3 hours in the afternoon for one day... its a competitive market out there so having a CV that stands out is a MUST these days...

start at the bottom . Work your way up. Stay motivated as that will get you noticed more than anything else once you have your foot in the door....

Not really. A friend of mine who has just turned 16 started applying for jobs just before he left school this summer. He applied to around a dozen jobs from warehouse work to labouring he got a job within 2 months as a apprentice in a building firm. Luckily for him it was exactly what he wanted to do. But he applied to wide variety of jobs he just wanted to work. My advice is don't just apply to shops but try all types of work. If you really want to earn some money get what you can until you get some life\work experience behiend you then start applying for the jobs you really want to do. Employers want experience end of.

Get that first step on the ladder it gets easier after that.

I think our age gap are all in the same boat, I'm glad its not only me.

I'm 19, I have fairly good GCSE's and three A-Levels at grade A, but I have been looking (and not getting) for a job for the past month since I left college.

I live in a small town though. I don't know what its like in a City. I only ever enter Leicester when I go to home games, for example. But there is f**k all where I live, and thats not over-reacting. We only have several big firms which include B&Q, Wilkinsons, Matalan, Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys. Other than that, its a small business really which hardly advertise jobs. I'm abit stuck because theres no jobs around so I look around the town at places such as Sheffield and Doncaster etc but all my applications seem to get no reply (I think its because I have no experience in my field, or it could be that my applications are poor!).

I know lots of people from school that god fed up within the town and looking for a job that they just joined the RAF. I am still wondering whether I should apply for the air force like.

And today is Monday, so its back to job hunting all day basically.

I don't know about you but I feel like I'm lazy or something because I haven't got a job, but when theres non advertised etc what can you do apart from try?

Same all over. I have job alerts from a couple of sites. I put down security officer Leicester. And I get alerts for finance manager Derby or similar. Your alert only has to contain one word that matches and you get all sort of jobs come to your inbox.

The ones that are suitable may have been filled or out of date when I click on them. The Mercury is no good. There is no section for security now. Well not all the weeks I have looked. In fact the job section is a lot smaller now.

I have started to look at cleaning jobs. There are some where training is given but would they prefer women?

Been told at the job centre that I must put more on my card other than nothing suitable. So I assume they want me to lie and say I have applied for jobs and then make up a reason for not getting it. A couple of companys have got my details but not heard from them. I will be happy with a part-time job for now. I have enquired about doing something with Citizen Eye a community newspaper. Basically its newspapers using unpaid freelance reporters for stories but its something to show them at the job centre. I have also enrolled at a learning centre in the Haymarket. I have done my English and Maths assessment just have the PC course to do.

Even voluntary is a plus mark when applying for jobs. The employers like to see that you are doing something and willing to do other roles. You also gain more references.

What do you intend to do career wise or don't you know yet? Or do you intend to go to Uni?

I'm saying this because sometimes in an application, if the job reflects your future career plans it is a very good reason for why you want the position. Furthermore recruiters can see that you have a career plan.

Also when applying out of where you live, try and state in your application that you are prepared to move and give ties to the area if possible or reasons for you to live there.

If you want a job quickly - bookmakers are always after staff.

It'll be even harder now as there are loads of people job-hunting due to being made redundant etc. Add that to the fact that many teenagers our age will want a job due to the fact that EMA has been cut will make it even harder!

I luckily got a job at Asda, applied just before my exams before anyone else started looking for jobs to give myself a headstart.

Keep looking through the vacancies of all supermarkets- Asda/Tesco/Morrisons etc.

Also, as you're a football fan, have you considered refereeing? The course will be around £80, plus around £40 for kit but it's a great investment as you get paid from £25 a game, for an hour or so of refereeing 11 year olds on a Sunday morning! I'd highly recommend this.

I was thinking about this, I reckon It could clash with my 2:30pm games on a sunday, Some games it will, some games it wont, So i might look into it further

Thanks :)

I used to work at Sainsburys, in reply to the post above. The pay is excellent but what they expected was ridiculas. Anyhow, that just might have been my supervisor, as long as she doesn't apply in Leicester, you are safe.

I quit the job.

IT, hopefully. Just finished a three year course and got my certificates the other day. Applied at some places but most ask for experience. How can you have experience when you haven't had experience? Ridiculas.

Had a letter from my housing association this morning. I am £xxx in arrears and they want the money now or else. I was supposed to be on hosing benefit. Called the office up and my claim is still being processed. It was put in on the 14th July. If its the same for my council tax that is paid by DD so a weeks JS will be took from my account to pay for it.

I could do with a good Samaritan to help me out. Any offers? I will have to start selling stuff on Ebay. I have a collection of old cameras I might let go.

Is there much money to be made buying and selling on Ebay? The only problem is I would have to buy before I coud sell.

Just remembered got a couple of printouts from the job centre I was going to call them.

One a cleaner and the other a Civil Law enforcement Officer (nights) sort of a traffic warden.

Offer to work for free for a week. A lot of places would except someone for work experience. Call them up first, enquire, send a CV and a covering letter.

That is a good idea.

However, things are looking up. Got a phone call at 11.30 today and I have an interview

Done that aswell by trying to get an apprenticeship, still no luck so far.

My suggestion would be to go into Leicester with a load of C.V's and register with as many agency's as you can, I think when I was out of work I was registered with about 15 agency's and did a range of different jobs for them including:

Sausage Linking

Mail sorting

Computer data entry

putting up Marques

Making rubber seals

putting Appliances into new build houses

Order Picking

the key is to register with as many as you can and these will provide you with different jobs which you can try while you continue to apply for full-time/part-time jobs until you get one. Also the more experience you have will help you to get a full time job aswell as give you a better idea of which sort of job you would like.

I have had my current job for nearly 5 years now but I still get the occasional phonecall from one of the agency's offering work.

hope this helps, good luck.

Best thing to do at this time of year is to perhaps register at an agency, for example, Midland's Consulting Centre on Horsefair Street, Leics.

Got an interview on Thursday at DFS' head office in Doncaster for an IT role.

Don't know what questions to expect, they won't be the same as my previous job at Sainsburys, and am also going to be interviewed by 2 men according to the e-mail, so I'm fairly nervous but abit excited at the same time.

These days competency based interviews are popular. I would prepare by studying the job description and determining the behavioural requirements for that role.

I'm a commercial manager 17 years with a large utility but various roles and worked my way up via loads of successful and failed interviews. Not sure what competencies would apply to IT

- a guess

Problem solving (break problem into small chunks / solve each section to achieve end result etc)

Results driven -( working to tight deadlines (time management / planning ahead / assessing risk / key milestones / contingency etc)

Emotional resilience (adapting to change / working under pressure etc)

Communication and Influencing (popular in most roles)

They may provide these competency requirements in the job spec - they may not. If you ared struggling for examples, it is coomon practice to embellish on something but don't just make some thing up, you'll get tied in knots.

General rule is to give your answers with past real life examples. VERY brief scene setting, detail not about what you did but HOW you did it and a brief final result to show you got to the right conclusion.

Try to use as many IT based examples as you can as this will show any technical expertise you have!

Otherwise, research the company , history, board, you may even find insight into their interview protocols on- line - in fact look on line for general competency frameworks. Most big companies use the same

Good Luck!!!

(NB apologies if you know all this!!)

Mines not too good. I dont really want to go back into what I was doing cos of the hours but I am not experienced in many things. Willing to do part time security work which thwere may be more available nearer xmas. Just weekends may be ok then do a couple of morning/evening jobs in the week to make the money up. But I'm not too bothered.

The last week or so I have had an aching shoulder. This may be the result of me fracturing my wrist about a year ago and with my age it does not heal as quick. So i wonder if that can be seen as a reason to retire early if approved by the doctor. I am still able to function but my shoulder just aches night and mornings and sometimes during the day.
