The Smokers' Thread

Hello smokers.

Thought it might be useful to get together share any thoughts and tips on cessation / money-saving / etc.

What do you all smoke?

Have you tried to stop?

What has worked for you?

I'm at that stage where I sort of want to stop, mainly for money-saving, but enjoy it too much.

I smoke 20 Marlboro Bright Leaf blacks per day (lovely fags).

Always want to smoke when I'm drinking too, obviously.

Tried lozenges but they didn't really work.

Bought Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking book but never finished it.

Fear that if I stop, I'll need something comforting to replace it!

Share your thoughts!

I say QUIT.

Alot of it is willpower and habit.

I quit in January, straight away after about 15 years of smoking. Had the last fag and that was it. If you really want to succeed, you don't need patches or gum etc. Will power and determination is the key.

Habit comes into it alot too, if you are used to having a ciggy at certain points of the day.

Just quit and go for it. You'll notice a difference in your taste and smell within a few days, plus when you hike up a hill you won't be huffing and puffing half as much...oh and not to mention the added bonus that you will save a shed load of money and won't stink. :)

Disclaimer - Never been a smoker, so I obviously don't know what it's like to be hooked on nicotene. I did smoke a couple of packets at uni once and decided it wasn't for me.

My old grandad used to smoke like a chimney, got up one morning and said 'I'm not doing this any more' and never smoked another, ever. That was before nicorette etc.

All depends on your willpower I guess. Reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke by 10% every week, see where that gets you.

I think habit is key.

I know it sounds stupid, but what do you do when you usually would have had a ciggie?

Think how much time that adds up to and what you could do with it. You could probably write a blog or run a small business with it I bet!

At first i tried eating apples and things like that...now cos it's been so long since i quit, i don't even think about it.

Wish I could say I have never smoked but I have indulged in the habit. Between the ages of 17-20 aprox I used to buy some Makisons and other cigarillos. This was partly because one of the older blokes at the factory smoked them. The thing is though I never inhaled. I did not like it. For a few years after I used to buy some Cigars at Xmas and make them last until New Year then give up. Again I never inhaled. YOver the last10-15 years I have not bothered to buy any but sometimes I wonder if the urge is still there. Would I buy a packet of fags if I became depressed over not finding a job? I hope not. I try not to preach at people about smoking. It is a bad habit and I appreciate that it may be difficult to give up. The worst anti-smokers are ex-smokers. As for giving up I think as someone said it is best to just stop and suffer a week or two of withdrawal symtoms. If you get past that then yhou can congratulate yourself. :chant:

Smoked for 30 years, up to 40 a day of the mega 16% thingo's. never felt bad for it, enjoyed the taste and all that went with it..but disliked the fact that it controlled my life, so i gave up 7 years ago. I still miss it, and to be honest, i dont feel any physically better, i didnt notice any change of taste. But i save a fortune and i control my life, i dont have to go outside when my addiction tells me i need to, i dont stress about spending hours in a meeting, a plane etc.

A couple of things...

To those who say "will power" thats only good if you decide you want to give up, if your doing it for others, or for health benefits but you actually enjoy smoking, then will power will not do it... because you have to want to stop.

I used the drugs, it is some form of suppresant which helps break the addiction, im not sure how much it helped, but its basically an antidepressant so at least i wasnt angry all the time, which was a problem when i had tried to give up in the past.

Look at why you smoke, look at why you want to give up... then try everything you can until it works. If you really dont want to give up, then dont try youll only succeed in pissing yourself and everyone around you off.

If anyone wants to harass you for smoking.."youll get cancer ... hospital costs etc etc".. Just remember if they eat meat, they increase their risk of Colon/bowel cancer, if they drink alcohol...liver/kidney cancer, if they eat fatty foods... obesity. make your choices and live with them.

Trying to give-up currently, haven't smoked for over a week.

I'm using the gum, which keeps my cravings in order but it's the habit I'm struggling with. First thing in the morning, after meals and last thing at night are the hardest but I guess it's just a case of breaking the habit.

I'm finding it quite boring not smoking, which is something I didn't expect, having a cup of tea just isn't the same. BUT I do feel healthier, I have more energy, I don't feel controlled by it and it's saving me a fortune.

I used to smoke 40 johnny Player Specials a day for about 3 years then when I realised I wanted to play football again so I quit. It took me 5/6 goes just using willpower alone. It was grim.

I'm not the biggest smoking fan at the moment (although during the off season I am known to have a sneaky one when I'm out pissed) as MsFoxy has started smoking again after being off them for 3.5 years. It's the smell more than anything that turns me.

Anyone who is under 50 (so would have been taught constantly about the damage smoking does, shown black lungs etc) is an idiot for starting. That is all.

I'm a complete social smoker really. I'll smoke on a night out if people I'm with are, although most of my mates don't smoke anyway to be honest. I went to Southampton the other weekend and smoked about 2 packs over the course of the weekend but I hardly ever smoke during the day.

I've not got a big problem with people smoking like a lot of people do, I can see why people smoke but to me it doesn't make sense to smoke habitually for various reasons.

Good luck with it!

Yeah, the after meals / first thing in the morning ciggies are hard ones.

But the ones I struggle with are not the 'time of day' ones but more the ciggies you have when you're stressed out (most of the time these days!) and I struggle to find a replacement for that.

I never really smoked when stressed out, it's an entirely psychological thing and it doesn't actually help you at all.

Oh, fair enough. Never seen those before, obviously not a seasoned smoker!
