The Smokers' Thread

Times must have changed... I understand that is used to be seen as 'cool' so peer pressure convinced many to smoke. But when I was at college a year or so ago, smoking was mainly seen as 'dirty' (which it is), 'scummy' or only done by chavs in tracksuits. Mostly kids off the Monsel.

These are probably the same college students who think One Direction are role models and attending lessons is a good idea.

They should be drinking, smoking and listening to punk rock

I'm a bit of a social smoker, if you can even call it that. I only ever buy fags on nights out really or if I'm heading to the pub as they compliment drinks pretty well. Luckily, I have them in small enough doses, so that I don't get addicted in the slightest.

Well we used to get drunk at parties and listen to Rock music. One Direction weren't around then but I can assure you they'd be universally hated amongst the guys.

In our college, the only people who smoked were the chavs, the slags, and the scummy no-hoper kids.

Same as me. Most of the time I go 5 days without a cigarette then come the weekend when I'm going out drinking I'll get through a pack of 10 BnH silver.

Now then, I need to pack the ruddy cigs in now. I'm skint and they cost me a fortune.

I need some genuine tips / support please.

If you're someone who's never smoked a cigarette in your life and you're thinking about chipping in with some crap like 'just stop' or 'you don't need them, they'll just kill you', then save your proverbial breath.

If you've successfully quit, I'd like to hear your pearls of wisdom.

Cheers.

I've mentioned it before in this thread but you should get yourself to the doctors & try a course of champix. Ideally you should still be smoking when you start the course, and so long as you dont have any adverse side effects from them you will have stopped smoking within the first 2 weeks.

Alot of people have mentioned feeling sick after taking them but i found that so long as you take them at the same time each day & eat something before you do take them then you should be fine.

Good luck with everything bud.

Thank you mate.

I thought Champix might be the answer but I got a bit frightened when I read about how it's not recommended if you suffer from anxiety / depression etc, which I do. Also heard it gives you horrible dreams! Did you find this?

Think I shall see the doc and see what he says.

I'd stick an end of a lighted and smoked fag up the arsehole of the poster who had deleted my thread earlier.

Bloody arsehole.

I wouldnt say horrible dreams, extremely vivid dreams though yes. It didnt bother me though really. If you are on anti-depressants currently then your doctor wont give you champix. The list of side effects for champix is endless! I think they are just covering all bases.

I found that after less than a week the taste of cigarettes became horrible and i really didnt struggle to stop completely at all.

They arent for everybody, but from my personal experience with them i can't recommend them highly enough.

Just give them a go bud, if they dont agree with you then go the patch/gum route.

I tried lozenges (same as gum for all intents and purposes) but just found I was chomping them like nobody's business and still wanted to smoke anyway! Just ended up a complete nicotine junkie!

I've had exactly the same problem!

I find the fookin gum more addictive than fags!

I don't think 'Resolution' accounted for that!!

lol

Bloody nightmare aren't they!

I think because you get the niccy hit without the smokiness of a fag so you just keep chasing the hit.

I don't think there is a product out there that I haven't tried. I still smoke & I smoke a lot........30 a day.

The most successful I have ever been is 9 months. This was done using a combination of patches & inhaler. After a few months I was completely clear of any products & I had considered myself as 'given up'. I then helped my friend move house & his wife lobbed me a bit of 'green' as a thank you. I bought a pouch of tobacco to roll up & bang!!!.....I was a smoker again.

It was the closest to success I have ever been. Started on 25mg patches & inhaler. About 5/6 weeks in, started dropping the strength of patch & dropped the inhaler completely. This was a difficult phase, but struggled through. Kept reducing the strength of patch until they became a waste of time..........several months later, a moment of weakness & I was a smoker.

Of the other products, I thought the nasal spray was the most effective. Stings like a bitch for a few days, but it gives you that immediate hit you're after. Trouble was, I replaced my addiction for cigarettes for an addiction for nasal spray.

Gum.......not effective at all. It says not to chew, but it's gum & you're gonna chew!! Left me with a kind of cramp feeling in my throat/neck as the gum released it's nicotine.

Champix......an unusual experience. Like others have said, carried on smoking & about a week in gave up smoking. Just didn't feel like smoking. The pills did make me feel extremely sick until I learnt to eat prior to taking them, which reduces the effects dramatically. It's the dreams though!! Not necessarily nightmares, but so vivid I was barely sleeping at night. I think the vivid dreams are something that comes with all of the products.....but nothing quite like Champix.

Patches.......I like patches, but I have always used another product in combination...... particularly in the early stages.

I'm going to the chemists this week to start yet another programme of trying to give up. I'm going to try inhaler & patches again.......if I can resist getting mashed this time around!!

The one thing I would say. Don't go buying nicotine replacement products off the shelf. The prices are crazy, when you can walk into a lot of chemists & get 2/3 weeks worth of products at prescription price. However, if you have 2 products - that 2 prescriptions.....so about £15.

I have given up now for 5 months. I use an ego-c electronic vaporiser bought from totallywicked.com on line - it's the only thing that's ever worked for me.

I've done it - I've jacked them in.

Despite having a packet and a half left, I just decided on Sunday evening not to smoke anymore - haven't had one since.

Found it OK, though obviously difficult at times. Using nicotine lozenges very sparingly to help.

I've started an attempt to completely stop again this week, it has very much turned from a 20 a day habbitt to very much a social thing with a drink for me, partly because it just seems to make me ill these days unless I am drinking.

But I've just been put on some hardcore strength Ibuprofen tablets for 2 weeks so I can't drink, so seeing this is an oppourtunity to lower alcholo intake in general and kick the fags completley.
