I don't actually think It's to do with rep, as there are people with lower rep (yes I'm sad) than me who have more dots.

Well it's not showing anymore so possibly, but a quick check reveals I have 1 less dot than DavieG, who has probably been going since long before I was born.

So for 3,000 posts you get six dots and for 17, 000 posts you get eight.

Rep points I think would be a good way of doing it as we already have a post count.
