Just read an article which said he "texted wife about killing himself before it happened".

Interesting point made between the reactions to Gary Speed's death and Gary Ablett but that is another talking point I guess.

What was that?

Just the different in public outpouring but ofcourse there was probably more of a shock factor in Gary Speed's death

It's all speculation still I suppose, and always will be because nobody knows, but on SSN last night, the reporter said that Speed could have been sitting on the stairs with the rope around his neck

So, he might not have meant to do it, but I think there is always that chance of it happening when you apparently sit on the stairs with rope around your neck.

Oh yeah, I know what you mean.

Yet the inquest gave a narrative verdict..sounds like he did mean to kill himself at some point if not there and then.

It makes sense though, as sad as it is. Gary Ablett had a serious illness so it could always happen. Gary Speed's was completely out of the blue and pointed to wider unknown problems in his life and possibly affecting football as a whole. Couple that with the fact that he's going to be better known than Gary Ablett to anyone under the age of 25 and it's not surprising.

Not that I'm saying it's right or wrong, just very understandable when you look at the difference between the deaths. It's like comparing apples and pears really.

Respectful bump.

5 (!) years since Gary went..and sadly his family still don't know the reason for it occuring.

Didn't really check on him much during his playing days but many put down Wales' rise in recent years due to his initial managerial work with them.

I hope the recent uncoverings of abuse in football weren't a contributing factor to his death. Speed grew up in the same area and was an active young player around the time of the other victims. Very sad all the same though, what a great player he was.

we need to remember that footballers no matter how well paid or famous are human beings too who feel and think just like regular people and when they need help should be able to ask and find it without being stigmatised or fear of being made to look foolish by the press. fans should know the difference between banter and actual harm or suffering they cause players

For some reason, his death got to me more than any other famous one I've known. I think it was the fact that he was on Football Focus the same morning and he seemed fine.

It certainly shocked and disturbed me more than other notable deaths. Even now just thinking about it is very upsetting.

Read the other day that he used to stay over at Bennell's house. Speed's dad said Gary would've been too clever for that though.

That might be true, but I'd imagine every dad would want to believe that. Of course there are plenty of other reasons why somebody would struggle with depression so it's too much of an easy conclusion to jump to.

I wonder what happened that day to set him off.

Didn't he deny that he wasn't a victim in anyway linked?

I can't see pressure of managing an international side, especially when he was doing quite well with Wales, making someone to take (likely outcome) his own life.

Sad to hear.

RIP Gary.

Edit: I totally forgot that he had passed away in 2011. I'm a moron. In my defense it's Monday morning here.

Nonetheless....RIP Gary.

Gary Speed was named in court today as one of four players who had been coached by Barry Bennell and killed themselves later in life. Story to follow.
