And the goal we conceded was mainly due to his lack of positional awareness, which is fine in the Andy King role that we're all used to. But when you play in a four four two formation, you do need to be strict with your positioning which he wasn't! Back to the goal, Kingy needed to work with Wellens to win the ball back which was pretty easy to do from their positions. However Kingy didn't work along Wellens which allowed so many gaps to open up, thus c onceding the goal. Against Donny, King should be dropped no question. Much prefer to see Danns or Fernandes who seem to have that extra 'umph' about them. However once Mills comes back, I would love to see Bamba in midfield with Wellens. Know he played there a few times for Hibs. Then bring Tunchev back in with Mills, who both can do a brilliant job!

Was a two match ban because he's already received a red card this season (denying obvious goal scoring opportunity is normally just one match)

Agree with this, St Ledger needs to take the majority of the blame, and also the player (dunno who it was) who let in the cross, those guys NEVER get criticised for goals like this but if they stop the cross it isn't a goal. I'd drop both central midfielders after their performances, caught in possession and gave the ball away far too often.

In the middle part of last season we were all talking about not letting him go for less than £6 million. We'd be lucky to get half that for him now, he's gone downhill since then and it's a real shame considering his obvious potential. Those who say he's not a creative midfielder are right, he really should be, but he doesn't show off the attributes necessary for this often enough.

As more clubs who might buy him realise the limitations in his game, his value will continue to drop. He's a great finisher coming from deep but offers little else.

Fox92 Posted 11 December 2011 Posted 11 December 2011 I think we can get a better player than him in. He isn't strong enough in tackles throughout the course of the game, and ok, he does a lot of off the ball work but generally he isn't good enough.

I don't intend to describe why anymore - the bloke's goals and shots on target have spoken for themselves for years and much louder than Wellens. King is never going to be a Tiatto anymore than Scholes and lots of other effective midfielders. We've got to play to people's strengths and I don't think King/Wellens is ever likely to work for reasons already mentioned. I've said three times now that King may well benefit from a move. It would do him so much good to play in a fast-passing team which creates chances on the floor and where his ability to ghost in and take advantage of those chances will flourish. Much of Kng's ability gets negated by Wellens because they have no passing harmony between them. King gives and goes, Wellens passes long because he isn't a natural give-and-go footballer for various reasons. They hardly play together at all. I've mentioned partnerships before and am sure that Pearson saw the two of them as partners.But they're not. And yet a midfield partnership is vital just the same as wing partnerships like Konch/Dyer and striker partnerships (though the one we've got looks like another that is destined to founder).

It was Mills' fault. That wouldn't have happened if he wasn't sent off in last game. Yeah, someone actually said that.

IMO we were dominant of Posh for pretty much all of the game, I don't think anyone could argue the Posh midfield over ran us? Our failing were not turning the pressure we had into goals in the first half, switching off after we took the lead (a bit of arogance maybe?). I also feel the subs didn't work, I think the Nugent-Beckford forward line was more threatening than the Howard-Schlupp (not that I am critising the substitutions as I was calling for them, just don't think they worked). After the subs we looked more likely to lose the game than win it. Let the abuse begin!
artursteppe Posted 11 December 2011 Posted 11 December 2011 For over a year now I have been saying there is no way we can play King, Wellens and Gallagher in the same midfield. What is even worse now under Pearson is that Dyer has been added to those three. It has to be the worst selection of what should be a balanced midfield that could possibly be brought together with the players available. I was right last season, and I am still right now. I have always suggested that as individual players they are all OK, but I am now starting to think differently, they are very average, and constitute one of the weakest midfields in the Championship. It is time the fans faced facts, they are poor and it puts a seriously large question mark over Pearson's ability. If you also put Danns into the mix, we have Pearson in effect put Wellens, King, Dyer, Gallagher and Danns ALL above Abe, Fernandes and Johnson. We need the men in white jackets to take Pearson to the 'funny farm'!

Neither of them could win or retain the ball, so we were unable to put sustained pressure on one of the division's worst defences. They've been underperforming all season and the patience of the fanbase is starting to run out.
