Thracian Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 Let us be quite clear about it. Andy King is a good footballer. Any midfielder who passes the ball as quickly and accurately as he does and who plunders double figures in goals each season is an asset. But the bloke seems so frustrated he's gone flat. In fact he's almost gone into hiding and if I were the coaching staff I'd want to know why and to find out what might be done about it. First of all King is the ultimate team player. He plays a selfless game but he needs to play with others on the same wave band. King is a one or two-touch give-and-go footballer. But that's no use if others don't, can't or won't play that way and too many players in our current side are exactly like that. Consequently we've entirely lost any cohesion as a team. We can improve the situation immediately by playing other passers like Tunchev, Abe and Schlupp in the team but we don't and never really have. But King needs to improve too. Since he's bought his big four-wheel drive with its personalised number plate his own batteries have gone flat. King needs to be demanding the ball but he doesn't. He needs to get out of cruise control and push harder but instead he paces himself. He's much closer marked in attacking areas now and needs help to deal with that. But, above all he needs to be playing in a team which compliments his ability and which operates with a sense of purpose. Today's team is disjointed. There's no flow. No cohesion. No understanding. No rapport. No collective spirit. The above is not meant to reserve a place in the team for King either. If he can't attend to the things I've mentioned then he's finished going forward as a footballer and that would be a shame because he's got skill, he's got brain and he can operate effectively at a decent level. But "can" is another word like "if". Short of letters but big on implication. King has got to have the heart for his job and to show the character needed to climb over the obstacles currently in his way. Whether he will is anyone's guess but it's important because Wellens won't change, Abe won't get 10 goals from central midfield and neither will anyone else at the club from what 've seen. King needs to mirror the motor he's got and get some oomph. He needs to demand things of people starting with himself.

If King had a player with a "lennonesque" engine next to him, he would be freed up a bit more to attack the oppositions goal. Its so frustrating because King IS our best finisher when one on one.

They are both midfielders, who have played together a lot and it doesn't work too well, so they need to be split up as a pair. My comment was flippant but people probably would notice him more if he ranted and shouted at team-mates, regardless of how well he was playing. He does go "missing" at times but no more than others.

Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 Yesterday King came on at half time and looked pumped up for the first 5 - 10 minutes of the second half, some nice little interchanges and quick passing around the Ipswich box, but then he just fizzled out. He didn't seem to get in to the game, maybe he wasn't comfortable or sure what his role was in the midfield 3, as has often been said he is not an attacking midfielder he is a defensive/holding midfielder with great timing at getting in to the box, when he plays further forwards he is much easier to track. For all his anonimity this season he has scored 4 goals, he is a team player and as the team plays better so will he, but he is not the type of player to take the game by the scruff of the neck and exert his influence on it, unfortunately neither is anyone else in the team.

leicesterseddon Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 He was poor yesterday again, as he has been for the whole season really. To be honest, I just don't think he's tough enough for the league. There are a lot of physically big sides in this league (like Ipswich yesterday - one of their centre-halves was a monster), and he can't compete. Wellens has more bite but doesn't tackle much either. Too often, entire games just pass him by. What we really need is someone like Mark Davies back in the midfield. One of Steve Walsh's best spots during his last spell as scout here.
