sharpie Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 anyone who knows anything about football can see Mills is not a good captain or a decent player, i thought this after seeing him at start of the season and mentioned it on here about a month ago but on here everyone seemed to love him but now they are seeing the light, although i do think his last 2 games have been better than the previous ones i have seen! his attitude stinks as well as he seems to blame everyone else when we concede, also wellens does the same get rid of the pair of them.
Libertine Dream Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Was disappointed with his reaction when Pompey scored, you could easily see Wellens and Konchesky trying to keep the players heads up, whereas Mills just stood there shaking his head. Not what i like to see from a captain if i'm honest... I think part of the problem then was Bamba shouting something at him, when Mills had defended that situation well enough on his own, needed support and Bmba was the one playing everyone onside. But yea he needs to get the players going better.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Blame Sven, another shit signing by him. Mills' just makes you worry everytime he is under pressure, and why the **** cant he pass?! I can pass better than him. Waste of money, but our defence on the whole isnt good enoguh.
Guest ttfn Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 It's not his attitude that's the problem, it's his passing and awareness of his teammates. His passing truly is a sad indictment of the quality of youth coaching in this country. To think that he would have spent 5 years or more at some of the top academies in the country and all he can do is lump it out of play. If anybody has it recorded on SKY, go back and watch the period from 4-7 minutes in this match. Mills received the ball three times. On one occasion, Abe dropped short to receive the ball to feet and on the other 2 occasions King came short. Each time Mills knocked it out of play (although on the second of the three he was unlucky that the ball went over Schlupp's head), with 2 going out on the touchline and one for a goal kick. Also, when he does play what he would describe as a "long pass", there appears to be little or no subtlety about it at all. He is just putting his foot through it - it reminds me of the "Ave it" John Smith's advert from 5 or 10 years back. It is completely without finesse or any element of technique. You might have thought that over a career where he has been exposed to regular coaching for 10 years he might just have picked up how to pass the ball without looking like a pub player. Defensively, the timing of his jumping is excellent, and he gets good distance on his headers. He also has reasonable positioning and outstanding bravery. But these are all traits which anybody could show. He simply does not have the required technique to be a decent footballer, and it is remarkable (and a testament to just how good he is in the air) that he has made it as far as the Championship without the ability to spot a simple 5 yard pass. He is a large part of the reason that this side is so poor at the moment. There are others, undoubtedly, and I am trying to forget that we paid £5 million when coming to a conclusion about him. But, as I've stated elsewhere, if we are to improve as a team, we need players comfortable on the ball and with the composure and trust in their teammates to play simple passes to them. Mills will never be this, and as long as he is in the team, we will be a long-ball side.
Sampson Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 With regards to captain, Konchesky is the only person for the job. I don't know if people who sit near the back pick this up as well as us who sit near the front, but he is the only player out there who talks and tries to motivate his teammates. It's the same almost every game: it's Konchesky and 10 quiet men who barely talk and seem as if they don't even know each other. Mills is definitely not a captain, he's not a leader or an organiser, he barely even talks on the pitch.
Guest ttfn Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 I can pass better than him. The sad thing is I don't doubt it for a second. I don't know if you or anyone else on the forum have read the excellent Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, or Bounce by Matthew Syed. In each book the author talks about the little advantages that people get in life which lead to them being selected at a young age and getting better coaching, ultimately leading to the illusion that they are geniuses when in fact, they have taken advantage of the opportunities presented to them and the additional coaching available. How on earth is it that Mills can have had all these advantages - hours and hours of technical training and instruction - and still not be able to pick a pass? If there's one thing that infuriates me, it's professionals making mistakes that I know if I did at Sunday League level, my teammates would bollock me for. Virtually every time he gets possession Mills does something like this. It's not fvcking good enough.
The Doctor Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 No WE'VE made a mistake signing them. I don't generally dislike our own players but there's some things that just keeps winding me up about Mills. It's the senseless selfish tackles he makes when he gets angry (the ones that have seen him sent off twice) it's his moaning at the fans after 3 games, it's his failure to stop hoofing it when it's clearly not working. I've not really seen much leadership from him so far. A waste of £5m. Yep, entirely his fault, not like there are no other options because there's no movement in front of him? Now then, he's a good player but he's never been a ball-player. The simple balls, when available, usually come off but as for the long balls - crap but in his defence, none of our other players can pull them off either. Overpriced but that isn't his fault so why not ease up?

It's the same for Konchesky and Bamba and Peltier but they hardly ever just boot it out of play. He's doing it at least 3 or 4 times a match.
MrFox781 Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 I thought his defending was okay today, HOWEVER his passing was atrocious and also the fact that he is captain is a joke. The man has no passion or drive in himself and has no effect on players playing with him and the fact that we paid around 5 million is a joke. shocking mills. shocking.

Perhaps because Bamba is quite confident and comfortable on the ball and is happy to take players on, likewise Peltier and Konchesky are playing in roles that allow them to drive forward and create options for themselves. Mills could do better with the ball but if that's all he's doing wrong then I'll take that.

If he's this bad on the ball then it's not really good enough. And he's not been great defensively either, and he's cost us with 2 stupid sending offs.

Unlucky to go in both, according to TV pundits and independent observers - what we need is a centre back who can dribble like Ronaldo and doesn't do any tackling or heading that might get us into trouble, probably! Bit like Walsh, Taggart and Elliot used to be, graceful and skillful and never going in hard at the back - thats what we need

I thought virtually everybody was agreed that was a red card. The second was unlucky.
seenitall Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Fair enough - but defenders do pick up bookings and get sent off - its players that hide all game like Gally and King who get nothing given against them
Kitchandro Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 The first was a reckless two-footed lunge. I thought virtually everybody was agreed that was a red card. The second was unlucky. Yeh agreed. Though the second one was still a silly tackle that gave away a penalty, and he was always risking a sending off too even though it was harsh. Fair enough - but defenders do pick up bookings and get sent off - its players that hide all game like Gally and King who get nothing given against them There is a middle ground between being a pussy and trying to break someone's leg and making no attempt to play the ball
Unabomber Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Sol Bamba can pass better than Mills with his genitals, that says it all.
ithuriel Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Both his and schmeichels body language was worrying today! Really, i noticed nothing here. Peltier was a bit lacklustre and Sol was not so bubbly otherwise they played far better than the last home match and schlupp did very well. Mill's actually did o.k. today. Wellens i thought before he got taken off started to make some poor decision's but maybe it was tiredness, he really does look a yard slower than even a year ago. Konchesky did at times try to be a bit to clever and almost cost us a goal when he was caught dallying with the ball on the edge of our box in the first half and near our corner flag the second, he need's to learn there are time's you hoof it out.
Steam Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 He seems to be an old fashioned centre half, no flair but gets the job done mostly. Probably shouldn't be first choice for captain, but I still think he is one of the better centre backs in the championship.
Vlad the Fox Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Our main problem is in midfield. No creativity, muscled out too easily and poor tracking back. We give the defence and attack stick but the midfield isn't protecting the defence and the service for the front men is poor. Pearson should quickly get rid of anyone who isn't happy or upsets the changing room regardless of who they are and be allowed to build his own team. But we have got to be prepared to accept that this season may slip by as it is very difficult to do in January. If anyone needs cheering up pop over to LTLF, now they really have got something to be angry about.

Mills is an indictment of everything wrong with this club and English football in general. How our owners allowed the mercenary to waste millions on a player who lacks even the most basic of technical skills is a question only they can answer.
iamafox Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Wouldn't be surprised if he concedes a penalty again at the sh*tty ground (if he plays).

seenitall Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 He definitely should call Reading on Top's behalf and insist on them returning the money, he should then go back there and be sold for less money to someone crapper than us
Tielemans63 Posted 31 December 2011 Posted 31 December 2011 Mills didn't seem happy at all today and I agree that isn't acceptable when your club captain. However, if I was playing behind that powder-puff midfield I wouldn't be happy either.
