ian the fox Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 The man himself has proved how little he knows about our current plight , Talking in the Mercury he says " we paid over the odds for mediocrity " and picks out Wellens as premier league class , King as a runner !!!! nice to see he still likes a laugh at least .............pull the other one Robbie .........
Happy Fox Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 Comical from Sav agree about the bit about paying over the odds for mediocre players but Wellens prem Class , King has the potential to play in the prem but this season has gone off the boil, Kasper defo.
Guest MattP Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 I still can't believe anyone respects him as a pundit. He talks constant shit and just talks in cliches, the sort of people who respect his opinion are the same sort who sit there gawping at X Factor etc

He aint wrong on that score!
Fez of Mahrez Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 He always, always picks out Wellens as our best player when he's on TV. He must have played against him once and been impressed. Makes you realise how out-of-touch some of these people on television are. If he'd done any sort of research he'd know Wellens has been struggling this year.

Spot on.
cc_star Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 He's half right, bought a load of players no better than was already here & paid over the odds for them, not just in various fees associated with signing players but presumably in wages too which makes getting rid challenging to say the least. The rest of it being wrong (on current form & for too long now) doesn't mean his main point is wrong.
ian the fox Posted 17 January 2012 Author Posted 17 January 2012 I wouldnt target Mills as a "Akinbiyi" kind of signing personally , or Beckford as that technically poor Like Yakubu last term , some strikers are totally reliant on service from midfield or set pieces . Of which we have....... nothing .......
whitlock Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 In slight defence of Sav, he doesn't watch every Leicester game, he will only remember games he has seen.... Wellens and King must of had stormers last time Sav saw them.
Corky Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 In slight defence of Sav, he doesn't watch every Leicester game, he will only remember games he has seen.... Wellens and King must of had stormers last time Sav saw them. He must remember King strolling past him to slot in the second at Lack of Pride Park last season.
cc_star Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 I wouldnt target Mills as a "Akinbiyi" kind of signing personally , or Beckford as that technically poor Like Yakubu last term , some strikers are totally reliant on service from midfield or set pieces . Of which we have....... nothing ....... Except Beckford doesn't, at Everton he received the ball deep ran at defences & made stuff happen for himself, he receives the ball deep here without a problem but his runs lead to nothing & he's shooting is woefully off target. Or at Leeds he had a great partnership, we'll here he's got one of the hardest working partners around & he can't be arsed to attempt to form a partnership, he'll much sooner stand marked knowing that if he finds space someone will pass to him & he'll have to do something, probably involving another off-target shot. The midfield has a lot of problems but they're not helped by many in the team... Beckford himself bring one of the worst culprits. Mills is an experienced Championship centre-half who's not very old, couple of million pounds is roughly the going rate, it's not his fault how much we paid for him. Wolves were sniffing so we priced them out of the market. Of course one of the reasons he did well at Reading was 'partnerships' but yet again (just like upfront & in the middle) a successful partnership wasn't formed over the pre-season where these things should be worked on & he just adds to the feeling we're nothing more than a team of individuals as highlighted by the woeful marking up at the back, every single game. Hobbs was mucked about by Sven, pushed to LCB to accommodate Bamba & for me if Hobbs hadn't have been messed about (position-wise and in & out the team) he was every bit Mills equal but with greater potential Just another example of paying over the odds for someone no better than was already here.
MC Prussian Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 I see he's improved his dancing, I wish he'd do the same with his intelligence.
s3cTioN782 Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 To be fair Wellens has been poor this season but over the last 2 previous seasons he has been outstanding. Probably that's why he was named as one of the best midfielders (in the championship) in the country at that time , including player of the year last May. Maybe that's a reason he is so poor this season as he thinks he has done it all? So if Sav only goes on what he saw last season there is every chance he is still judging him by last seasons standards . You don't lose class so hopefully Wellens and King (needs a kick in the arse ) will pick up. As for Sav saying we over paid for mediocrity to an extent I have to agree. But hopefully tonight will be the turn around for our season and players like Mills will show their worth.
MC Prussian Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 As of right now, I can only think of two players which I'd consider to have been too expensive signings in hindsight - Mills and Beckford. But they still have 21 games to prove me wrong, so...
purpleronnie Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 One thing you can't deny is that robbie looks great:-
Saxondale Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 I wouldnt target Mills as a "Akinbiyi" kind of signing personally , or Beckford as that technically poor I'm pretty sure that if Mills was a centre forward and you translated his current form, his strike rate would be no better than Akinbiyi's! When a striker isn't scoring, everybody notices (eg. Beckford).
MrSpaM Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 Was Wellens playing for Man United the same sorta time as Savage was? that might explain a few things
iamafox Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 Wellens has Premier League class? Then why wasn't he a regular starter when he was at Man Utd?
okie fox Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 Wellens has Premier League class? Then why wasn't he a regular starter when he was at Man Utd? Maybe because of Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Butt
flowwolf Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 Or maybe he was just not good enough and still isn't.
ian the fox Posted 17 January 2012 Author Posted 17 January 2012 Was Wellens playing for Man United the same sorta time as Savage was? that might explain a few things good point
okie fox Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 Or maybe he was just not good enough and still isn't. Precisely! But he is still good enough to play in the championship, given an adequate supporting cast.
Fox92 Posted 17 January 2012 Posted 17 January 2012 Where can I get these comments by Savage from? Does someone have a link because I cannot find it. Was Wellens playing for Man United the same sorta time as Savage was? that might explain a few things Savage will be a few years older, surely? I don't think he played with Wellens. I mean, Savage was playing for Crewe in 1994! Wellens has Premier League class? Then why wasn't he a regular starter when he was at Man Utd? He left Manchester United because he couldn't get in front of Scholes, Keane, Giggs, Beckham etc. Blackpool brought him for a fee, he wasn't released.
