Should we focus on the CUP?

Recommended Posts

As we're now 2 wins behind 10th in the league and without much hope of even sniffing the playoffs should we focus on the F.A. Cup?

Should we put a weakened team out on tuesday against Watford to ensure out best team possible for Norwich?

We should focus on winning each & every game we play

If we win 5 or 6 league games in a row, which teams do from time to time we'll end up around the playoff positions... This is a big if though we haven't won 2 games in a row since last Feb when Sven won 4 or 5 in a row. Under Pearson last time we were out the playoffs but won 5 in a row very late in the season & ended up 5th

Nothing is impossible, even if it looks unlikely.

Exactly this...

How can anyone at any stage of the season think different... aarrgghh *facepalm*

I have been saying we wont do it since just before exmas.

That don;t mean I dont want us too.

FFS play every game to win. We aint one of the manc clubs we don't have that quality of squad and could end up looking fvcking stupid.

I agree but we were never out og the Po's towards the end of the season, close to it but not out of it.

But i thnk that we can do it, we can win games in a row, but it has to come soon

We need to focus on winning every match we go into, no point in focusing on the cup, you lose once your out. The championship is that mental i think we could afford to lose 4 or 5 more and still be in with a shot at the playoffs!

Play offs are still in reach. Ok, we are 7 points of atm but we still have teams around us like Leeds, Derby, West Ham, Reading, Birmingham, Hull all to play and if we can get something from those games then we can still make the play offs, in my opinion. The season is not over and putting a week team out against Watford, especially away, would not be a good idea in my opinion.

I would love us to get in to the quaters, and maybe even further, of the FA Cup though.

Lmao! if a football team decides to take a cup competition seriously you focus on the cup and the league you don't just stop focusing on the league thats crazy talk! lol

We should never play a weakened team.

But Wellens plays most weeks :P

Yep.

I've never really understood why professional athletes can't play 2 games every week without problems anyway, unless they have an actual injury. Frcom a scientific point of view there's no excuse.

At this point in the season I'd argue the cup is as important as the league at the moment, but not more. We can still save our season but we can't afford to sacrifice one competition.

Exactly if they didn't have a match they would be training anyway if we had a Birmingham style Europa League schedule then there would be need for rotation but not in this circumstance should it be considered

Yes focus on the cup. We arent out of the promotion race mathematically but how many set backs, slip ups and no shows does it take for people to realise we just arent good enough?

Mind you. I really cant see anything but a loss at Norwich in the cup so make the most of it!

I think we all realise we are not good enough to be promoted its just we feel under no circumstances should we be compromising playing a weakened team in the league. 3 points could be the difference from coming just outside the playoffs or ending up in the bottom half how would that affect our chances of bringing in new players in the summer and making a statement of which direction we are heading in?

Pearson puts the best team out he can every game Villa wont let Delfoneso play and Drinkwater is cup tied so what's your point?

I disagree, 3 points, won or lost wont make much of a difference. I'm sure it will be full strength line up for the league anyway. I'd accept resting a few key players if we went to Norwich and really threw everything at them but as said, Nigel knows the league is what the owners are interested in.

I'd have thought anyone semi-intelligent poster would understand the point but I guess I can elaborate for you.

We play two games in a week, some players are seemingly uncapable of playing 2 lots of 90mins in such a short space of time (or at least playing all out for those 90mins). So I was asking what you and the rest of the good people here on the city board thought about resting a couple of players from the Watford game to be sure that they could put in a full stint during the FA Cup match.

I was quite aware of Danny and Delf which added to the reasoning that they would definitely play the whole match against Watford. We could also play Hopper and the other couple of youngsters there (unless they were going to figure in the Cup game) so that Nuge or Becks up front and others could be sure to get over any small injury niggles from the satdi match.

Is that clear for you Danny?

I was at no time suggesting that I thought they should or shouldn't I was airing the question for discussion.

Many people could be of the opinion that a better chance of winning in the Norwich match is worth "resting" a couple of players in the Watford match (which comes so quickly after the Norwich match).

I admire the fans who think we can stil make the playoffs. I will be hoping we can until it is mathematically impossible but I'm afraid the team has shown that they can't win enough games. With the number of teams above us now we would really have to win most the games we have left to even make the playoffs. It isn't going to happen.

Amazingly we have a better chance of making it to Wembley in the Cup than we do of making the playoffs. I'd like to see us maximise our chances of beating Norwich.

Delfouneso should be able to play, Villa are out.

but he's only come off the bench so far, Watford could be a chance for him to start.
