My question - What are people's thoughts are on where we would be now if Pearson had not been forced out of the club? Personally I think it was clear where we were heading under him and with a bit of tweaking I think we'd be promoted already and enjoying a Premier League relegation scrap this year. My point - I think Pearson is one of the best managers in this division. He doesn't now have the luxury of the tide of good feeling that promotion brings, and has returned to a club which has been dismantled and rebuilt since he left. The squad has a few quality additions but are largely average players on inflated wages. There is also a big problem of a star striker who obviously can't get motivated in this division, and the club captain who has had a mare of a season but believes he's the next Franco Baresi or something. The squad is also far too big and there must be a lot of frustration to deal with, and we clearly have had our fair share of dressing room unrest. So it was never going to be an easy task sorting out Sven's mess. Pearson has made mistakes - notably being too reluctant to change from 4-4-2 even though it worked against Palace away, but I suppose he could argue that any team and formation capable of beating Norwich and Southampton so convincingly should not ship three goals against Bristol City and Watford. Apart from those two recent horrific defeats I think there have been improvements under Pearson and I think a lot of people overlook the fact that we were so bad at the beginning of the season that if Pearson hadn't returned to sort this out we could have been in a relegation scrap at the moment. I don't know where we'd be, but I would say there is a strong chance we'd be higher than where we are now. Don't think you are right on that last one, the inconsistancy that plagued Sven has also been present under Pearson. We have been good and bad in spells under both of them. At some point you have to say it's the players responsible for that rather than the managers, and Sven takes the blame on that front for putting this squad together.

cc_star Posted 13 March 2012 Posted 13 March 2012 I think we'd be better off, but the Thai's wanted a name, & with Mandaric & Co doing their dirty work NP had to leave. The dream scenario might have been NP staying on & handing a list of higher tier targets than he otherwise might have been able to attract to Sven as a DoF... But DoF's rarely seem to work either so maybe not. NP has played 532 at Palace and we conceded far too much ground, I do like this formation but he's had a look and doesn't fancy it... He's also played 433 in quite a few 2nd halves, again he doesn't want to start with it & since the arrival of Marshall we have more balance for a 442 which has worked excellently when we play with intensity, which we only do inconsistently its clear there are negative forces at work in some players heads and also in the background... I think that can only be properly dealt with in the summer so until then NP has to fight them /and/ the opposition. But as far as formations go, we've had a look.
