Bamba in midfield

After the Chelsea game I started a topic about why Bamba is never played in midfield? No one seemed to think it would work or he should even be playing.

Finally he got his chance to play in the middle today.

Thoughts? Because I think we have found a new midfield option, i'd play him over wellens all day long. He looked comfortable and for me did a great job in the middle of the park.

If he plays on the middle with Drinkwater, then Marshall and Dyer either side i really think we could be onto a winner till Danns returns.

First few minutes he was on didn't look convincing at all! Looked like he wasn't sure what he was supposed to be doing!

Did settle later, unbelievable pressure from Dull, without creating any chances!

if asked to sit and hold he'd do a good enough job, his 25 yarder would of capped it today but it wasn't to be

I totally agree, for me he is a good centre back but not reliable enough to play ahead of Morgan, SSL or Mills, he is a skilled footballer and loves to get forward but isn't clinical or creative enough to be a attacking midfielder. He is designed to sit in front of the back 4, he can get forward without leaving the defence with huge gaps, he can get forward and run with the ball which he loves to do and he can put in those tackles we all know he can tidying up the play. I know he isn't perfect and he has a lots of flaws but i don't think we have played him in his best position yet. Its going to take more then half a game to make him a midfielder but potentially I think its perfect. I totally disagree with people asking for him to be sold, he is exactly the kind of player we need in our squad, we need to develop a squad of players that are able to challenge for places and cover and rotate around injurys and form if we are going to go up. A player like Bamba is a great Championship player, lets not get ahead of ourselves but if we can keep the squad and players we have now and then add to it in the summer we should go in to next season with a group of players who are used to playing with each other and some competition for places which all teams need to have, our team almost picks itself these days.

I thought he looked like a CB playing just in front of the CBs, which is what he essentially was. Okay for the circumstances today but I'm not sure it would work if we were chasing a game. Not really creative enough.

I've thought for a while he should be in the midfield (or at least given a go). Hes perfect for the 3 man holding role, but I would worry about him in there in a 2 man midfield. For example him and Danns in the middle I'd worry about the distribution; but I think he could be molded into a good midfielder. It could be exactly what we're missing.

Thought his role today was crucial, and we should consider playing him there more often. Read a comment where someone said he was poor and was a 'CB in front of the back four'. Well that was rish role, otherwise known as a defensive midfielder.

I think he would be good to play in that position away from home, to not only give our back 4 a bit of protection, but to also give our attacking player more insurance, we are not physical enough in midfield, and this may be the answer.

Would definitely like to see him in midfield, would be the protection the defence needs and love watching him go forward and as we saw today he can shoot! Also if he makes a mistake less chance of the opposition scoring!

According to some people on this forum, Bamba doesn't have a footballing brain and he isn't goood enough for that position

What a shot he hit.

Deserved a goal.

Absolutely! I was well impressed when he hit the post; for the control, the pace and the shot. BOOM!

That's too obvious. :P

I'm still undecided. I thought he looked ok today, but I was expecting much much worse. Apparently, sticking him in midfield at Blackpool didn't work, but I didn't see that match for myself. I think he has said he prefers not to play in midfield, but I think, with a bit of work, he could make a half decent Championship midfielder. He clearly likes to go forward, he's quite skillful for a centre-half, and as we saw today, he's got a decent shot on him. He will have to work on his passing if he's going to play there more regularly.

If I was manager, with the current wafer-thin midfield, I'd make sure Bamba, Peltier, Marshall, and anyone else who can play CM, were practicing playing there in case they are needed. With Danns likely to be out for a few matches, and Wellens a doubt, I think we'll probably see Bamba in midfield again soon.

He's not a centre midfielder. He can fill in there but his position is centre back. He's said so himself.

I think he could really grow in to the defensive midfielder role ... he can break play up, get forward and add some aerial (that can't be the right spelling?) threat, and is a tidy player on the ball ... With Danns banned I'd love to see him start in centre mid.

I'd like him to show the form he had earlier in the season where more often than not he was terrific at the back. He's not looked quite the same since ACON but he is a quality defender, just a bit erratic and unpredictable at times.

Our defence isn't exactly pulling up any trees so if he plays to his best he can win his place back. I don't think he should be playing in midfield but at the moment it's starting to look like something that may be forced upon us for one or two games.

Remember a few years ago when Kisnorbo was absolute SHITE in midfield but he got moved to centre back and was good? Well this is the start of something ;)
