Cannot waiiit! Dunno whether or not to give the second book a quick re-read before it kicks off again though....

Probably best not to, you'll just end up comparing too much and end up dissappointed.

I dunno, I really liked the first series on telly. Thought the casting was great and it had an epic feel to it.

I'm going to read them through again at some point anyway. I guess I'll hold off for now. After the first episode though, I'm sure I'm going to get impatient at having to wait 1/2 weeks for the next one so will just pick the book up anyway :P

Way too busy with Fringe to start on this, it's in a holding pattern.

But which Olivia is which? And isn't she HIS Olivia as he has been erased from all time lines, therefore HIS Olivia's timeline must not exist either....

I watched the first couple as I'd read the books and they are fantastic. I was disappointed, just seemed to be an opportunity for americans to watch soft porn. I still have the others to watch - is it worth it?

Same here Ken. It sounds to me like it's all sword fights and naked women, not our type of thing anyway.

I've started to read the book and I've read the first 100 pages and so far it's incest, paedophilia and politics. No sword fights yet. Oh, I forgot the dwarf.

Daggers might like it, potentially.

I'm struggling with it thus far though. It's no Tolkein or Donaldson, heck it's not even a Feist or an Eddings. :(

I'm a big Tolkein and donaldson fan and feist and Eddings are very decent too. I'm saying that so that you keep on with the book. I found the series to be very good.

Have you read the Malazan series by erikson? Must be the most complicated fantasy plot I've ever read, with more "peoples" than Tolkien and Donaldson put together but seeing what you like you ought to give it a go (10 books in total).

Okie dokie

It just seems, with the amount of sex in it so far, that it's more chick lit than fantasy adventure. As you'll know, Thomas Covenant basically starts off with a rape scene, I'm not at all squiffy about it, just more, "STOP SHAGGING AND DO SOMETHING!"

You should be ashamed of yourself Trav, and if you were infront of me, i would give you a good shoeing. If you watch the series propoerly the shagging in integral to the plot of the series, as you may or may not know...humans and in this realm people do shag, and shagging is part of normal life and has an inpact and dictate there fortunes!! More shagging the better!!

As I said earlier I've only watched the first episode of the TV series and I was very disappointed that it seemed to be all nude women and shagging. I thought that the books were about the intrigue in the game of thrones. What I really liked was the depth of the characters. Thomas Covenant was unrivalled, IMO, for a couple of decades, I didn't like the rape scene but it was integral to the plot. i don't think that Game of Thrones is Fantasy in the way of Donaldson, despite the Wargs, trolls, Giants, others etc... I viewed it more a story of politics and power set in another world.

While the tv series is different from the book, it has to be. I like both but the book is very political and character personalities and relationships are integral. It is obviously hard to make a successful programme and get across the same sort of things so they've had to hollywood it up a bit. Sex is also very important on the whole as the series revolves around families and bloodlines.

I also agree with the bit in bold. I like the world it is set in but I also like the fact it doesn't try and act all-out fantasy and I think this gives it a lot more depth.

Half way through the first book and loving it. With my rubbish memory it's a challenge remembering who everyone is and all the history but at the same can't help but admire the sheer scope of the story unfolding.
