It should essentially just be the Tyrion Lanister show.

I'm not sure I find Snow particularly "endearing" though, he's petulant, childish, arrogant and whiney. Sam, on the other hand, is an excellent character and probably a better example for what you're talking about.

He does come across as this, not sure why as he's the opposite in the books. Gets on with shit, loyal, good morals, obedient.

I'm not sure how this season is going to come out on TV, already I've been a bit disappointed but as the corresponding book was very much politics based it was going to be hard for them. Was personally my favourite book in the series.

Because the scale of the book is so big and there are so many 'main' characters it all comes across as a bit rushed as on the whole they can only fit key scenes in and there's little room for character development outside of those scenes.

Are you finding the books decline in quality past book 2? I'm at the start of book 2 and loving it but from what I read the first 2 are by far the best and then they get worse, particularly book 4 onwards.

Would be a shame to invest all that time only to be left a bit disappointed by the end.

Too be honest, I stopped reading after book 4 (around Christmas) and I'm not sure why. It might have been because I was bored with them, it might have been another reason. But I know I enjoyed reading them so I picked it up from the start of book 2 recently.

More characters are introduced and it becomes even more complex than an already complicated book in book 2. The unpredictable nature of it and the story not always going where you want it to go might have played a part. I don't think I'll be spoiling anything saying *******people do die*******. You saw it in the first book/season with Ned and it does continue. I'll probably comment again after I've finished part 1 of book 3 as I can't remember what the key plotlines in this book were.

That's my experience of an these fantasy epics all over. Chief offender was Robert Jordan who strung out his Wheel of Time series to ten books before dying without finishing it. I guess the success of the first and second, etc., compells them to keep something going that they had originally intended only to be 2-3 books long.

Gave this a go with S01E01 last night. Enjoyed it apart from all the soft porn, which my son found most embarrassing.

Can anyone tell me if the nudity and sex scenes carry on all the way through it or was it just the first episode that had alot?

It does 'carry on' a bit....

Sadly that was the reason I stopped watching it too.

In the books it wasn't so obvious - well Daenerys was but generally not. In Dances with Dragons it seems to be playing a much more prominent role as if Martin is writing it with the U.S. tv market in mind (so many tv shows have become soft porn shows over there at the moment - boardwalk was a great example of that). does anyone know if he wrote the Dances with Dragons book after working on the TV adaptation of the first series?

I think he's been writing it for a fair while tbh. Don't quote me on that though.

Sometimes it's a bit unnecessary but I'm not going to let it stop me watching what is a difficult but decent adaptation. I'm not sure if it's a ratings thing or a dumbing down thing because there is lot of subtlety in the books (not just with sex) that they've been very blunt about on screen. Whether it's just easier this way or they don't think the audience would understand, I'm not sure.

I will say I'm loving Tywin this series, fantastic screen presence. Also good to see Sandor Clegane getting some more screen time, another really good portrayal IMO.

I was furious, I said to the Mrs

Sean Bean had better do a Bobby Ewing and turn up in another couple of years in the shower with the whole thing having been a dream, other wise I'll jack the show in.

Also I don't think I've ever felt such hatred to a character before as I do Joffrey, the fecking bellend.

Joffrey's an excellent character, yeah. Almost the entire Lanister family make fantastic villains - Jaime is a fantastically punch-worthy ****.

Stick with it, though, I couldn't see how they'd keep it up without the aforementioned loss but there's always another character ready to step forward.

Have bought this on Blu Ray.

Blu Ray is too old to watch it on.

Seething.

Are you able to update the drivers? I had the same problem with one of mine but was able to hook it up to the net and download new software for it.

Tried this

Was Unsuccesful.

Might sell the Blu Ray and buy on DVD.

Manwell, what do you mean your Blu Ray is too old? Your player? That sucks. Never heard of that :(

Anyway, I started reading the book and couldn't get into it. Then started watching the TV series, got to S01E03 and thought it was a bit...wooden? Not sure. But I started reading the book again alongside it and the book has so much more to offer, it makes the TV version look appalling. Sticking with the book for now. A shame, as I was really looking forward to it.

This is beginning to get really complicated!

Halfway through book 2 and keeping up with series 2. Although this was tricky to follow last night - the Myrcella scene was initially confusing, I thought it was Qarth. lol The scene involving Tyrion and Joffrey with the crowd trouble was excellent though.

For anyone with iPad or iPhone there's a game of thrones app through ign which is free and aims to explain what is going on. Worth checking out.

I've just finished watching the 1st series boxset on hols (having finished the first book a week earlier) and I have to say the amount of gratuitous soft porn in it (even compared to the book) was just silly. I thought that sort of thing didn't sell well in the US? (Despite the obviously heavily British cast (the kids are very well acted I have to say) I'm assuming it's a US production.) There's plenty of "I don't remember that bit!" <sic> in the series. I also shows the first chapter of the second book for some reason that isn't clear.

I hear that the 2nd series is even more heavy with the sexploitation. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the feel that it's just there to give a 16-24 year old male audience cheap thrills.

Think I might just stick to the books.

That's what I thoght Trav and what I said.

The U.S. market has really got into this "soft" porn recently. I think they're becoming Roman. Maybe it's the beginning of the fall of the U.S.

There was a very interesting period drama - well acted called Boardwalk empire last year perhaps. Story was interesting but the soft porn which was actually pretty gratuitous meant we (wife and son as well) stopped watching it to avoid (perhaps prudish) embarrassment.

The books are wonderful though I feel dances with dragons has started to play more on the porn for TV angle.

The TV series does seem very exploitive. Why did Renly suddenly become gay (I had to go back and check the book and there's no hint of it.) Not only that, but he's clearly the submissive, not only in his relationship with the Knight of Flowers (He's a Tyrell, but can't remember his name), but also in his place on the council - when in the book he's quite a dominant person. No problem with there being gay characters in there, I just see that changing a persons sexuality for the TV series as being sensationalist. (Interestingly, though you see lots of lady bits through the series, there's only one scene with men bits.)

The fact that George Martin is heavily involved with the series saddens me, because if I'd written a book that was being made into a film/TV series, I'd want to keep it fairly true to the book, at the very least in characterisation. Is he selling out, or is this what he'd always intended? The shame is that this is a story that is interesting because of it's good characters and the intirguing politics that could be watched and enjoyed by anyone, but the soft porn and the graphic violence mean I can't really recommend it to anyone on the chance of them being shocked and offended.
