Outfox the Fox Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Nugent's form has totally gone out of the window since Pearson's return ? I know he's scored a few goals in 2012, but nothing like the number pre-Pearson. I think Nige's tactics in constantly playing him out wide, or deeper behind Beckford, have so backfired. He really has f***ed a good striker. As it stands, Nugent doesn't deserve to be playing regularly - and could well warrant a sale in the future. I would never have said that 4 months ago. PS By the way, "bu**ered up by Pearson" is not meant to be "BUTTERED UP" !
davieG Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 It's probably a good idea to butter up before buggering.

Babylon Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 4 goals in 13 under Sven, 12 goals in something like 36 under Pearson. So a very similar number, not sure what you're getting at there. He has played out wide because we are too weak when just playing two in the middle, so we have to go to the 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation. If Danns hadn't been suspended / injured he'd have played up top pretty much every game. The bloke looks shattered, he's ran his trollocks off all season and missed little game time. He looked like he needed a rest more than anything, but without many options due to injury and us needing our top scorer it's a bit difficult.
whitlock Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Some caller mentioned about him playing out on the wing on the radio yesterday after the game, Alan Young, seems to reckon Nuge likes to play out there, get the ball deep and run at defenders.

He played that position for Pompey last season and seemed to do alright
Grewks Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 What some people on this forum fail to realise is that Nugent's natural position is a winger, well more like wide forward (if you know what i mean). During his best seasons at Preston where he got the england call up, he played wide left, and for Portsmouth last season (his highest ever return since they signed him) he played wide left. This is why in games when played as a striker he often drops deeper and moves into flanks etc. and also another reason why beckford (who i have yet to believe is good enough) is so isolated up-front. If we can get another couple of decent wingers, a striker (target man), and a creative midfielder (hoolahan/lallana type player - yes I know every team wants one) then we can really look to push next season, maybe someone like Lee Tomlin, always looks very impressive and is more important to posh than boyd. Would love to see.... Stewart.....Marshall.......Nugent Futacs (trust me to be a full 1st choice international for a decent side at 22 is impressive - my pompey mates have been more impressed with him than nugent last year) then maybe drinky/danns/trotter rotating in midfield, then backup for pelts, and morgan/bamba/chester as the center backs, and konch with maybe kennedy back up we can have a successful season. even though players such as tomlin are currently getting 1st team football in the championship, i am sure they would rather be a bench premier league player than a 1st team lower championship side.
squidsworth Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 I heard an interview from Nuge yesterday, he basically said Nigel had asked him to play wider and it wasnt his favoured role, but was willing to play where ever the boss wanted. My interpretation of the full interview was he wasnt overly happy playing the role he's been playing lately, and that was the cause of his lack of form, and if you wanted to blame anyone, blame the boss. He also sounded pretty down beat to me, you could almost read it as if you challenge the boss you'll fall out of favour so you just do whatever you're told too regardless of whether its right or wrong. Pretty much sums up NPs leadership style, in my opinion.

Raw Dykes Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 I read it as buttered up, as well! I thought it was customary to censor just the vowels. B*gg*r*d? Maybe the middle letters. B******d. That looks like bastard, though. Buggered if I know. Anyway, no. I disagree. Pearson hasn't buggered up Nuge. Nugent has done that to himself through hard graft, which I thank him for. He's a very hard working player, and has looked in need of a rest for a while now. Had we had decent cover available, or less bad fortune with long term injuries to both Vassell and Waghorn, then we would have been able to give him a breather for a game or two. As for playing him on the wing, needs must. We had one central midfielder available, so why wouldn't you shore up that area of the pitch? So we're forced to play with one central striker temporarily. The manager now has to either play one of Nugent or Beckford out of position or drop one of them. Since Nuge has played left wing well before for other clubs, why not try that? People would have moaned at whatever NP had tried at that point. Playing Bamba in midfield in a 4-4-2 would not have worked, so a three man midfield was necessary/a good idea. Dropping either Beckford or Nugent wouldn't have been a popular decision, either. Left wing obviously isn't Nugent's favoured position, but at the same time, he's not out of position there, he has played there before to good effect.
squidsworth Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 A player has to be diplomatic in an interview so there is always stuff you can read between the lines. Yes its speculation, and its just how I interpretted what he'd said. If anybody else heard it, I'd be interested in their opinions. But he didnt sound a happy bunny to me, and nor has his recent performances been upto scratch. So I think some speculation as to why is fair enough.
Webbo Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Well I didn't hear this interview but reading between the lines and making stuff up I think he sees Pearson as a father figure and wants him to sign a life times contract as manager.

We've been shit lately, I'd be a bit annoyed if everyone was happy go lucky on the radio. It's been explained why he's playing out wide, he knows why he's playing out wide, it seems obvious why he's been out wide. Yeah he might not be chuffed with it, but needs must.
MrSpaM Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 It's ever since he's been put out wide his form has dropped He also sounded pretty down beat to me, you could almost read it as if you challenge the boss you'll fall out of favour so you just do whatever you're told too regardless of whether its right or wrong. Pretty much sums up NPs leadership style, in my opinion. We've just failed to get promotion, i'd expect most of the team to be pretty downbeat tbh

Whos first choice international for who?
Grewks Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Whos first choice international for who? Marco Fuctacs - Czech Republic Marco Futacs - Hungarian
Simo86 Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Marco Futacs - Czech Republic Futacs is Hungarian He hasn't made a senior appearance either
Corky Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Pearson just wants to annoy everyone at the club, it's baffling. Especially the fans who either make too much of something or just make it all up. Baffling.
Tielemans63 Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Why not blame Neil Danns for copping a needless red card when we were already well short of midfielders - thus creating the need for Nuge to fill the gap? F***ing hell.
MooseBreath Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 I thought it was customary to censor just the vowels. B*gg*r*d? Maybe the middle letters. B******d. That looks like bastard, though. Buggered if I know. Definitely an interesting one. My main concern would be regarding the purpose of censoring in the first place if you're then going to immediately eliminate the possibility of it being a less offensive word.
Corky Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Jesus Christ, do we really need to start making stuff up like the second part? Absolutely.

To me he's looked tired and fed up in the last 5-6 matches.
Haydos Posted 24 April 2012 Posted 24 April 2012 Marco Fuctacs - Czech Republic Marco Futacs - Hungarian Stop fvcking going on about him, hje has an awful goalscoring record and you must have seen him play once, against us.
