Ashley Cole is one of our only world class players and certainly the most consistent.

But if Cole were a disruptive influence and the rest of the team suffered for his presence, I would expect a good manager to be able to spot that LB can do a job for his country and weigh that against losing Cole. I know Cole is good but Baines isn't THAT bad.

I've no idea if it's a transferable thing but what Gary Neville says on MNF and Super Sunday makes it seem like he knows a lot about football, and knows exactly what he's on about. If he can turn that into some sort of coaching skill (he has badges so presumably he's decent at that too), this could be a brilliant appointment.

As much as Gary annoyed the shit out of me for years, he was a good player, and I can see him being a good coach. If you are a 60+ year old manager, you need someone who has the ear of the dressing room. Not a bad shout I think.
