Catalogue business

Just had a call from some one in response to my job search as a leaflet/catalogue distributer. Had a long chat. What it is, is a business and self employed. I buy a start up pack and sell from the catalogue door to door intrnet or however I want. He's going to send info by email. He was saying from 100 catalogues delivered there would be an average of 2.50 per house. The figures he was quoting sounded great. He did say people would try and put me off though. From what he said I could do 20 hours or so and earn the same as the security which is 48 hrs. And there is a lot of cashin hand. With the pack I would get a web site so could sell from that.

Now somebody is goingto put me off.

He is sending the stuff then maybe meeting up. He sounded genuine. Said the only way not to earn the money is not to do anything you have to be prepared to work at it.

TBH I would prefer working for myself than doing 48 hrs through a 'possible' job.

If it sounds too good to be true...

... but there's no harm in trying. That is of course as long as there is actually no harm in trying. How much is the start up pack? Anything that requires you to pay out first raises immediate red flags for me. If the start up pack is cheap it might be worth a go. In all likelihood it's probably a really hard sell and the earnings he is quoting will be very ambitious.

Sounds like Betaware or something similar. You might earn some money from it but I doubt it will be a fortune.

He did not say the name of the company. Said he had his reason for that. Gave his name Not keen opn the name Cameron.

He said the company were generine never been on Watchdog. They do work on comission depending on how much effort you put in. You can also take on others to work in your team and you get a bonus forthat. He said if you deliver your catalogues and get a big order that will average out. It just means a lot of leg work. I'm not far from Clarendon Park area which he said could be a good area. I can start for free but I just get 10 which is not much use. OK for part time I suppose and a try out for a week or so.

Alarm bells are ringing, sorry. :nono:

First of all don't knock on my door please ;) .

When I was looking for a job these were about the only jobs that people bothered to acknowledge my application but everyone and there were about 5 ended up with me needed to give them money for stock before you could start.

Many years ago and i don't know if it's still the same MrsG was an Avon Lady and what a rip off that was every time she put in an order for her sales they sent her more sample that she had to pay for and was nearly always out of pocket. in the end she packed it in but they wouldn't accept that and continued to send more chargeable samples, when I refused to pay for them they threatened to park a big Debt Collector Lorry outside my house, I had to call their bluff and told them to 'be my guest' as I would be informing all the neighbours and the Avon customers what a bunch of shyters (sp) they were, needless to say the lorry never appeared and MrsG made full use of the sample for a few years. :P

I'd try and get the name out of him over the phone at some point. It does sound as if he doesn't want you researching it before you meet him because he's good at talking people into it face to face.

Sounds like a pyramid scheme. I.e. you make money for the guy who talks you in to it, not the other way around. And be honest with yourself - are you really a salesman? If not you have a very high chance of losing out.

he said it wasn't pyramid selling. but I never mentioned that.he said it first. I said I wasnt a salesman but he was just going on about there is salesmanship in everything and all that is needed is knock on a door introduce yourself and goback next day. i was tryingto find out how many out of 100 would actually buy something and he was just quoting figures.

googled his name and not found anything. found someone with the same name to do with ballooning and a Tigers rugby player. he said he had a website with his name on qand if it was big like he said it would be on the first page.

start up pack is around 130 which includes dvd's web pages instructions etc. there is training but its a risk which he said there wasnt. he even said that my brother who does a lot of accounting and researches any financial venture he does, would not understand the business he is offering.

I would like them to meet.

If it was that great everyone would be doing it, surely 100 homes would take that long. Has scam written all over it.

Not sure what to think. Bloke on the phone says he uses a cart. But just watched the video some of the goods look big. Its fine if you get orders but I said to him if somebody knocked on my door with a catalogue I would tell them to go away. I'm sure a lot of the stuff is a lot dearer..

I may meet up with him and suggest I try the free one. I wont get the full package but I can see what products they sell and whether I think they will sell within the people that I know.

Anyway it will be something to put on my job search card and I may get advice at the job centre. He did say there were schemes to help with out of work people with businesses. If they think its OK and willing to help surely it makes it a bit better prospect.

I shall not do or sign anything until I feel I can make a go of it. Also got to consider the weather. Its fine in the summer but dragging a cart abouty over ice and snow, in rain and hail would not be very good.

He's a salesman, Ken, he's going to tell you a lot of exaggerated truths and even outright lies to push his product. It's in his interest to get you to agree to this, essentially playing off your (please don't take this the wrong way) desperation.

You'll be much, much better off in a stable job. I know forty odd hours a week can be draining but it's a solid income you can rely on and live to your means.

Non-fixed-income sales only ever works if you are a very, very good seller. There are some natural sharks out there who have a genuine talent for this stuff, they're the Camerons of this world who work their way up to be in a position to be exploiting the unemployed.

If you're having to ask around on here whether or not this is a good idea, that isn't you. I really wouldn't bite, mate.

Oh, and nobody in a pyramid scheme ever admits to being in a pyramid scheme. It is what it is.

We have a Kleeneeze catalogue in our post on a regular basis I just put it straight back out there's nothing in there I can't get from regular shops during my normal shop.

He's just left his last catalogue with a note saying he's moving on to new pastures, perhaps we're lined up to be your round.

I have bought similar stuff from the occasional registered disabled charity seller but wouldn't buy off anyone else and I suspect most people are the same and resent being accosted on their front door step but best of luck getting a proper job I've officially given up now.
