FoxesAreBlue Posted 14 July 2012 Posted 14 July 2012 A lot of wannabe pilots on here! When I was learning I found that on the longer flights I got bored as there was not much to do. I never actually got my PPL because I lost my job part way through but if I ever did it again I would just stick with he PPL and then go for an Aerobatics rating and do that instead.
Narborough_fox Posted 14 July 2012 Posted 14 July 2012 At the moment it's a Sports Scientist or PE teacher. Still swaying though...
Tom17LCFC Posted 14 July 2012 Posted 14 July 2012 Lorry driver. I used to imagine the trailers being like a massive room with a nice, comfortable bed and a huge tv
The Year Of The Fox Posted 15 July 2012 Author Posted 15 July 2012 Like this crazy bastard in his slippers?
Fox92 Posted 15 July 2012 Posted 15 July 2012 It used to be but they've recently built a new one near the Swanwick control centre. Didn't realise that. If you get on the course good luck with it all. Let us know how you get on!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 22 July 2012 Author Posted 22 July 2012 Ive just applied for an ATC position too
Libertine Dream Posted 22 July 2012 Posted 22 July 2012 Didn't realise that. If you get on the course good luck with it all. Let us know how you get on! I was contacted on Friday offering me a place on the October course. The problem is Ive got a lot on during the end of October/November which can't really be cancelled. I dont want to start and be missing a lot of the start and Im positive they wouldnt want me to either. Apparently if I opt to wait til January/February/March course, I'd have to go through most the stages again so risk missing out. I did all the prep I could so I gave myself the best chance and don't want to waste it. I visited the ATC at EMA, BHX and LBA aswell as studying and doing research.
Ashley Posted 22 July 2012 Posted 22 July 2012 I wanted to be a fighter pilot however I have Asthma so I couldn't go down that road

When I fancied ATC myself, I always wanted to go into the tower at EMA. Don't know why, but I've always loved that one... Bet the visits around East Midlands, Birmingham and Leeds were all decent though, get a good look at everything. You've done well to get an offer anyway.

If, as it seems, it's the job you've wanted to do for some time, you'd be a fool for saying no. Unless there's something u really cant cancel in October/November but then can't you pre-warn/take early annual leave of the most important thing? I had a similar thing with my training contract, I really wanted another year to do something else and was hoping deep down they would ask for voluntary deferrals, but when there are hundreds of people going for one place, you're asking for trouble to say no.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 22 July 2012 Author Posted 22 July 2012 My only fear would be dropping to a lower wage in the meantime. Itd be very difficult to keep a roof over my head with a few k less a year.

East Mids is definitely the best, seemed most up to date, a proper tower and the controllers already there were excellent. Brum was a little less up to date and it isnt a tower, more a room thats about 80ft off the ground and not situated in a great place but again the controllers were excellent. Theyve built a new tower to be operational this timw next year and that will be the bees knees when opened, if I do get on I really hope I get posted there at the end. My only fear would be dropping to a lower wage in the meantime. Itd be very difficult to keep a roof over my head with a few k less a year. Its worth it in the long run though. It may well be a struggle at first, I'm not sure if having a part time job at the same time is an option or not. It might be worth you contacting an airport to ask if you can arrange a visit as apparently they really like that, shows youve got an interest more. You're right but I feel these are thingss you should do in life, experience things particlularly when time is going to be tied up over years to come if Im on ATC training/work. I don't really want to be taking time off at the start of my courde because of the amount of work you have to do. I'm really torn. Do I chance it and face repeating stages in 6 months as Ive already been succesful once aswell as knowing what its all about or do I miss things I want to do?

As an outsider looking in it seems to me like a no-brainer, but I'm aware I don't know all the facts re what your commitments in October/November are. BUT... you've been offered a place or a very competitive course that's hard to get onto and that will lead you into an excellent, and lucrative, career that you obviously want to do. Surely, if you were to put it off until the next course and then not get on you'd always have that sense of 'if only'? Is this really the only opportunity you'll have to do those other things? I have to say if I was involved in recruitment for them it would ring alarm bells regarding your commitment (or lack of) unless you can give a very, very convincing reason why you want to hold off until the next course - I've no doubt they have countless applicants queuing up waiting to step into your place who they'd then be happy to give priority to. Think it through carefully.
Jackirius Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Apparently i used to really want to be a bin man O.o

The Year Of The Fox Posted 23 July 2012 Author Posted 23 July 2012 I know. It could be a dilemma of the highest order if I receive an offer.
RonnieTodger Posted 23 July 2012 Posted 23 July 2012 Leicester commentator on RL. I was quite fat so it was a job that didn't present much of an issue
